I used to play the Albin a lot after getting frustrated by lots of QG games. The highlight was a win in 12 moves in a zone final. That was when I truly realised the potency of opening tricks.

11:46 some might think instead of perpetual check, with Nd6 (check) will force king to move and spoil the castling chances but this is bonus for white at this stage as rook can easily defend and also easy moving rook.

As a queen’s gambit player, i’ve been wondering what black was trying to achieve with this - I’ve always just played e3 as my instinctive response to this - then it’s pretty much always exd4 exd4 and it just opens up the e file, which is fine

Yeah I’ve been hit with it before too at around 1000 rating, but I think nobody ever remembers the lines because I instinctively play right into the trap previously but never have had it go the full distance.

I play this opening! I've only had one person fall into the Lasker Trap, but even when they don't, it gives me fun positions. One other interesting fact about the Albin Countergambit is that it has a very famous (albeit fictional) user: Vasily Borgov uses it in his final game against Beth Harmon in The Queen's Gambit. Of course, she doesn't fall for the tricks!!!

One thing I've noticed after watching a ton of these videos is that Nelson usually ends up with all three pawns on both sides of the kings in their original positions with a ton of action and development already having taken place. It's interesting how much can happen with only two pawns being moved.

I’ve been playing the queens gambit as white for years, and I almost always get a better position than black when they play this. It’s very simple to learn how to play against this countergambit, and I win most the games. I started playing the albin countergambit a few years ago when I was 1200. I’m now 1800 and have played thousands of games in this time. Only 3 times has white fallen for the trap. It’s incredibly rare that it actually works, and when it doesn’t work it is very difficult to figure out what to do, and you will lose most games. As an 1800 rated queens gambit player, the most annoying openings for me are the Austrian variation and Budapest gambit. I would recommend these if you’re looking to annoy white.
