An extraordinary drummer who was on par with Frank Zappa and Weather Report. Later, I heard him, hurt, in an interview say one of the biggest foolish statements in the history of music: 'Jaco didn’t have a good swing,' clearly wounded because Jaco fired him to bring in Erskine

That was a special interview Derek, not seen your channel before but known of Chester almost since I could walk predominately through Genesis it has it be said. I’d only really heard Phil Collins side of the story of Chester joining Genesis, to hear more on and hear Chester speak for himself too, a dear soul, I could listen to you two talking in this format all day… Blessed by God and God blessed his ability to play music and write and such too… thank you for this, Derek, you have gained another subscriber. I just wish I’d seen this when it came out rather than 10-12 months later 😊 if I make little sense, my writing box is somewhat small to type in 😂

What a great interview. Chester seems like a really likable guy. I’ve heard only a little of the new album so far, but it really struck me how live, powerful, and in your face the drums are. I saw the Zappa band with Chester doing one of those early performances of “Inca Roads” in 1974 before it was recorded. It had a completely different intro then, with George Duke singing in a lounge jazz style. Thanks for this Dereck and Chester!

Dereck, I so enjoyed this conversation. As a fan of Chester throughout the years, the only time I met him was at a Phil Collins solo show, and he was quite kind. During this interview I was smiling and laughing along with the two of you. Of course I loved hearing abut the Zappa years(you know me...). Your interview methods are kind and inviting. I may just watch it again! Cheers.

I enjoyed the interview. A lot of interesting background stories and especially how spirituality affects music and relationships. Yes, there is a keyboardist also named Chester Thompson. He recorded an album for the Black Jazz record label in the '70s. Those late '70s Zappa albums have material recorded earlier when Chester was still with Zappa.

I think Chester is on Tony Banks album A Curious Feeling and Steve Hackett In Tokyo, both are very good! Derek breaks out the Fire Merchants first album? My Man! WOW! HAHAHAHA! That album is bombastic! Goodsall signed the second Fire Merchants album I have, but Chester was monstrous on the first album! Also Black Market you brought out by Weather Report, is stellar. I know the sales behind Heavy Weather, but Black Market...Highly inspirational. I met Chester way back in the 80's when he did a clinic in NYC with Larrie Londin (deceased now). Beautiful souls and I was ecstatic to meet these greats. I love how Chester studied composition just like my idols Tony Williams & Jack DeJohnette did. That's a complete musician when you can compose as well. By the way Simpler Times and Approved, Chester's Solo & Trio albums are also worth picking up. Chester is Music Royalty! Derek, next time you arr speaking with Chester, ask him about his faith. I think it will be beneficial for you to hear it. Love & Peace.
