Which naturally aspirated, track-ready muscle car is better to drive? Couldn't have asked for more closely matched competitors in my first ever muscle car comparo!

You couldn't be more correct! I had a 2011 Nismo 370Z and when I got my 2015 1LE I couldn't believe how much better it handled and was so much more predictable and harder to get yourself in trouble. Put 40k miles on both, in fact I don't think I ever got real out of balance in the Camaro. Now I'm looking at a Mach 1 or some type of 1LE as long as it has the Tremec 6mt!!!!

@@kevinadams7170 The mach 1 has a junk Tremec.. Watch what you read.. Ford really skimped out on that transmission.. Its NOT a T56/TR6060 like the Camaro, GT500 & Viper.. Its is a Tremec 3650.. same as the V6 camaro, and several other underwealming cars.. The Mach 1 manual is not even close to on par with the Camaro 1le.. Unless you want a garbage clutch and locked out of gears above 6500rpm don't buy a manual Mach 1..

I agree with a lot of your points. I’ve owned an SS 1LE, GT350, and ZL1. I’ve driven a Mach 1 too. The SS 1LE is the best value. It’s much cheaper than a Mach 1. I do love the characteristics of the coyote more. The Mach 1 will tramline a lot for a daily. The aftermarket can fox that. The ZL1 is a lot of car to handle unless you have a large track to drive it on. I had more fun in my SS 1LE
@FL50ssp

SS 1LE is not only the "best value" it is also as fast or faster than gt350 and gt350 r at tracks that don't have very long straights. Where the ~70HP advantage can be exploited. As for mach1 issues and having to go to the aftermarket to address them... this is exactly why I moved to GM for my performance/track cars. No need to correct engineering issues that ford didn't think were an issue for the majority of buyers. That and the GM track warranty... don't market your car as track ready if you aren't willing to offer a track warranty... looking at you frod.

An honest assessment. I appreciate that. The MACH 1 put down a better lap time than even the mighty GT350R on C and D’s lightning lap and it was 3 seconds quicker than the Camaro. 3 seconds on a track is an eternity BTW… being the fastest track car and far more liveability as a daily driver. The MACH 1 is the discerners choice here
@vbadbee9123
@vbadbee9123 Жыл бұрын
I don't buy the lightning lap from c and d. I think there was other conditions that contributed to that but the fact that the mach 1 only got some stuff from the 350r and is down on power yet puts down faster track times.
@al151
@al151 Жыл бұрын
Weather, tires, road conditions plays a huge role on c&d lap times. There is no way a heavier underpowered Mach 1 putting down better times than its donor GT350R. Forget about a GT350R, we did not even see a Camaro ss 1le with the same tire same day comparison, and there is a huge reason for that. Randy Pobst tested one with bad brakes and the cars were way too close to each other. A GT350R murders both the Camaro ss 1le and the Mach 1.

@@Bens1LEI'm with you man. Camaro is better looking IMO, and I'm not a professional race car driver. I picked my 21' SS1 1LE Used with less than 3500 Miles for less than 45K, got a smoking good deal. I drove a couple of GT's which probably pull harder at redline but I couldn't abuse them in the test drive. The Chevy 6.2 feels like an old school muscle at low RPMs and I fell in love with the drive from the beginning. I never drove a Mach 1, but the used GT's cost more than my Camaro, so I made my decision, then I hunted down my car and drove 800 miles to pick it up. Both cars for the money are freaking outstanding, but I didn't expect to get so much car for the money. SS Camaros are the best for the money IMO. Used ones were thousands less than the more popular mustangs but they are so close it's a coin flip, laters buddy

I bought a 2SS 1LE last month. I considered the Mach-1, GT PP1, Supra 3.0 and Nissan Z. To me, the SS 1LE offers by far the best performance for the money in the new car market. I came from a Focus RS so I naturally wanted to stay with Ford, but I just couldn’t justify the additional cost of the Mach-1 vs the 1LE. With the performance options I wanted on the Mach-1, I was well over $65K. The Mustang is minimally $10K too expensive compared to the Camaro.

@@maxwellsmart8730 sounds cool. It’s not what I was looking for though as I’m not really chasing big power- I just wanted a low-12 second car with the best handling possible for under $50K. No doubt the Mustang is a better daily driver, but I have another car to fill that role. My benchmark for power was basically matching or beating my old C5Z in acceleration. I thought the Focus RS I bought new back in 2017 would be close enough…it wasn’t. It just wasn’t a special enough car to be a weekend toy for me. It would be a fun daily driver, but I already have another car filling that role so I sold it. Not to mention if you want to get a halfway decent launch in the RS you had to beat the hell out of it, and that’s just not my style. So I guess in reality the 5-100 mph time is the key acceleration stat for me.

About 30% of the time i shift into 3rd while high in the rpms, it will not go in to the right gear or it will lock you out. Makes driving it hard scary and not enjoyable. Because of this im definitely considering trading it in for a SS1LE.

In the end I got the Camaro 2SS 1LE w/Tremec TR6060 6-speed and the PDR. I don’t know why Ford doesn’t charge slightly more and offer a Tremec in all of the GTs like Chevy does with the Camaro. I’m sure most people would be happy to pay $500 more, or whatever the cost is, to get the Tremec they put in the GT350 and Mach-1. Or maybe Ford wants to force manual fanatics into buying the Mach-1? I don’t really get it. 🤷‍♂️

I agree with your assessment on both these cars! I have had the privilege of owning a GT350 for two years with 5 track days, and been in a few SS1LE and ZL1 1LE on the track to compare. I have to say that the Camaro's chassis is just on another level of sophistication. Its downside is truly the engine, not in terms of capability but in terms of lacking emotion and reward for revving it out. The voodoo engine on the other hand completely makes the car. The violent sound and vibrations it makes all the way to red line really rewards the driver for pushing the car.

I have a GT350 as well. While there's not much torque down low, when you do get a chance to wined it out, it is super exhilarating. The progressive pull never stops. I've driven cars with more low-end torque, and while they are punchy and fun at take off, they tend to flatten out up top, and it is more difficult to put the power down. You were more honest than the majority of YT Car reviewers when comparing the SS 1LE to any FIVE OH really… all media crowned the SS champ long ago and like sheep, they all pick the SS over the 5.0 each and every time, just like sheep. This MACH 1 has objectively caught up and even surpassed the SS in many facets. And yes, the MACH 1 was faster than the SS 1LE at VIR for the. C and D Lightning also by a whopping 3 seconds. It also beat the GT350R by 1/2 second and the Mustang PP2 by 2 seconds. That’s 1,2,3 mustangs ahead of the SS. 4 if you count the GT500 but that’s not fair. This MACH 1 deserves love by the media. It’s a phenomenal car and it’s proven to be faster on track than the SS in many examples. Great comparison. You came to a lot of the same conclusions that I did when I considered trading my 2017 Camaro 2SS for the Mach 1. I spent a little money and added all the factory 1LE suspension, wheels and tires to my 2SS and it is a very capable car and more than any sane person would need on a twisty road. To me the Mach 1 was just too soft, every input was met with a delay then the car would respond. Turn the wheel and wait, hit the brakes and wait and the most annoying part was the way the Coyote makes power. Stab the throttle and guess what..... WAIT!! I'm just accustomed to the way the Camaro hits you with the torque down low. It's more fun to drive and a whole lot easier to throw around. I can always tell someone that doesn't own a Camaro as their firs comment is about the visibility. Cracks me up every time I hear it. When I bought my car back in 2017 I was ready for this horrific visibility and not being able to see anything. The moment I sat in the car i started wondering what everyone was referring to as I don't feel that way at all. By the time I made it back to the highway after picking my car up I was completely comfortable in it and have no issues driving it in traffic around town and on the highway.

Fords best handling car was their GT350R and that chassis wasnt handling the Torque the Camaro puts out. Power for track can always be added in the future, BUT CAN THE ACTUAL CHASSIS HANDLE IT? Dont forget that GMs Alpha chassis is based on BMWs 3 series cars, BUT MUCH, MUCH BETTER. The Cadillac CT5 V Blackwing is literally one of the finest handling cars in the entire world for its category, and rides on that chassis as well. Ford doesn't have nothing like that. Ford WON the sales war this gen by a large margin, but they didnt have the top of the line sports car.

@GrimSRT8
@GrimSRT8 Жыл бұрын
@@The-fs5wn no, they absolutely don’t cost the same. A Camaro 1SS 1LE costs $48K. A Mustang Mach-1 with Recaros (1LE has them standard) and no other options is just over $59K So that’s a $11K price gap, and dealers want an ADM on the Mach-1 because it’s a “limited edition” car with cool stickers. How about a fully loaded Camaro 2SS 1LE, which comes with memory and heated/ventilated Recaros (you can’t get memory heated/ventilated Recaros on the Mach-1), premium stereo, HUD, ambient lighting, camera mirror (not available on the Mustang), Performance Data Recorder (not on the Mach-1) has a sub-$55K MSRP. The Mach-1 Premium with upgraded stereo, Recaro seats (no memory, no heating/cooling on the Ford Recaros) and nothing else stickers for $62K and is missing a ton of features the Camaro has standard on the 2SS. No PDR, no camera mirror, etc. Plus the Mach-1 needs the handling package to handle as well as the SS 1LE. Add all of that and you’re at $68K. For $69K you could go buy a brand new ZL1 with a 650 HP LT4 and comes with everything the 2SS Camaro gets. Once you consider the ADM Ford wants, you can probably get a supercar beating track beast ZL1 1LE for the same money as the Mach-1. So no, the Mustang is considerably more expensive. If you want performance bang for the buck, the 1SS 1LE is pretty much unbeatable. No car under $50K can beat it. Hell, a Mach-1 (base) with zero options starts at just under $58K! And it should be noted, I was a “Ford guy” driving a Focus RS I bought new. After I did my research, the choice was obvious. I bought the 1LE. There’s a reason the big car magazines keep telling people to buy them! Edit: go read this months MotorTrend where the GR Supra 3.0 is compared to the Nissan Z. Their conclusion? Buy neither and buy the “much better driving” Camaro SS 1LE. The 1LE isn’t even in the comparison test and they tell you it’s the car to buy over either of the cars in the test.

Heck I traded in my 2021 C8 Z51 for a 2022 mach 1. The C8 lacked that visceral experience compared to the mach 1. The manual trans and that 7400 red line engine is just music to the ears. The DCT trans and the 6500 red line doesn’t have that visceral experience that the mach 1 has. Plus I put $23K back in my investments. Another factor was the problem lots of C8 owners are having with the DCT trans. Plus Ford has direct injection and port injection. GM only has direst injection and future carbon build up. Most manufacturers have gone with the dual injection route. Why GM hasn’t is a concern. They seem to think that the warranty will expire before the carbon issue build up is a problem. Big mistake in my book. That C8 needs a DOHC engine that will rev to 7500. Forget that Z06 because no engine at 5.5 size will last beyond 15,000 miles of constant 8500 red line. The Ford Voodoo engine at 5.2 has vibration issues over time. Lots of replacement engines and even a class action law suit about that engine.

It’s great to see these two pitted against each other. Unfortunately, I have yet to see a Mach 1 on street let alone one on track. Anyway, I hope you had time and knowledge to play with the driving modes in the Camaro. It may have been more appropriate to put the suspension in sport and the steering in tour mode. That allows for a light steering input while keeping the throttle in a more aggressive map. When driving with everything set to track, the steering does get heavy and the throttle map is completely linear. It was done specifically at the suggestion of Randy Pobst and makes throttle control more manageable at the track. However, to someone unfamiliar, it can appear as though the Camaro has less torque or needs to be wound out.
