Thanks for this video - It really helped me to repair an old broken Homelite my dad hadn't used in a decade. As an added bonus, I imagined it was Nick Offerman aka. Ron Swanson's voice guiding me the whole time. The similarity is uncanny xD

Good video. Would have loved to seen the process of cleaning an old spring that was all gunked up. I used to get a charge out of seeing the look on owners faces, or any other bystanders for that matter, when I threw a spring down on the concrete floor for it to "unwind." Onlookers would act like it was the end of the world when the spring blew up. Then I pick it up, sort it out and wipe it down then wind it back up. Some people are just scared to death of rewind springs!

You nailed it! Thank you for showing the correct way to do this. There are some on KZbin that made this a nightmare.

l have a Giantz 75cc 22'' chainsaw. This chainsaw has 2 springs, one ( assuming) sucks the rope in which is 6mm, other is 12mm starts the engine. After l changed the snapped spring (12mm) l follow your instruction everything was ok till l tried starting it. There was only one revolution which wasnt enough to start it. l fooled around with for a while but, l coudnt work it out. Where did l go wrong? Thank you for sharing such a helpful video :)

Excellent tutorial. My arborist friend recently gave me this homelite and I'm looking forward to repairing this part and testing it out. My first chainsaw! I read the owners manual and maintenance looks pretty complex. Do your customers typically transition to electric?

My Super 2 is metal body and actually has the stainless steel cup under the spring. It has a cutout in the side for the hooked end of the spring to slot through into the casing recess like yours in the video. I also think you'd do better with a smaller diameter cord - max 3mm. The full 1m of cord (38") fits in fine.

The 3mm would fit better, but I've been unimpressed with the durability of that small of rope on these saws. That's why I run it a bit bigger.

Leon's Chainsaw Parts & Repair I used a very dense thin rope that looks like a mini climbing rope. More rigid than the "loose weave'" style. I spent ages looking in my garage & tool room for a suitable rope then gave up and was going to use one slightly larger. That eve I actually had the saw on the floor in front of my fire, and I leant on the mantle. Right there in front of me was a coil of black rope! About 2M long. I think it came from a rucksack or a jacket! Perfect.

Leon's Chainsaw Parts & Repair Importantly, it allows enough length never to get the cord-shock of bottoming it out on a pull.

My spring and rope are good but it's not grabbing the gear so I have a lot of trouble getting mine started? What do I need to do to fix it? Do I need a new pulley? Where did you buy the parts?

My xl-2 wasn't pulling properly so I took it apart and the whole outer edge of the sprint was sitting on top of itself then shot out now it's an absolute pain in the butt to get recoiled. Would you suggest I keep trying or just buy a new spring online?

There's lots of aftermarket stuff available that will fit, but there's a few originals on Ebay: www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2334524.m570.l1313.TR1.TRC0.A0.H0.Xhomelite+ez+coil.TRS0&_nkw=homelite+70211&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_osacat=0&_odkw=homelite+94111

@@LeonsChainsawPartsAndRepair I was going to look and maybe ask but now I don't have to. Thankfully, the new to me Super 2 already has the 97768 installed. Thank-you Leons!!! Again hahaha EDIT: See the spring on the super 2 I got today has a loop/hump at the outside end (like the one you took out of this saw). The one you install here is a hook. We know someone has been in there because of the new pulley. And by typing this all out I believe I just answered my own question. Someone has replaced the pulley & McGyvered the inside spring end to 'fit'. It retracts nicely... but for how long? Now I need to find the replacement spring to go with the pulley. Thanks again hahaha ;-)

I have an xp1000 and my starter dosnt engage the motor like when i pull its not turning the motor over some times it will catch and turn it over but like 1 out of 10 times how do you fix that it happend after i took it in to a chainsaw service shop to get a new spark plug boot and a new pull cord put on cuzz it broke it worked fine before they got there hands on it and think they screwed something on it any idea?
@LeonsChainsawPartsAndRepair

The XP-1000 uses an overunning bearing style starter. It's designed to grab one direction and not the other. I'd pull it apart, clean the bearing and race well and then lube it all up. If this doesn't fix it, you likely need a new bearing and/or race. Here's an IPL for reference: www.leonschainsawpartsandrepair.com/uploads/3/9/7/9/39792537/homelite_xp-1000_ipl__1965__23875_.pdf
