Man if battery tech ever has a break through EV’s would dominate. Insane torque, efficiency, less moving parts, etc. If the batteries could be lighter / hold more charges- even just a 2x improvement in both and I would very interested.

Very much agree. Battery tech is not advanced enough to base a vehicle on it. Just not practical yet. Having to install fast charger, and having to wait 6 hours at the pump is insane. Turns a two day drive into a 6 day drive.

Charging speed and charger availability is everything. If I could go from 20% to 90% in 5-10 minutes at any gas station, I'd have an EV.
@Jay-me7gw

@@LongWalker730EV’s have been out for over a decade and what you’re saying is simply not true. People drive EV’s cross country and in the time it takes to walk inside, pee, grab a stack and some drinks, your car can fill up 70-80% on a fast charger. You can walk away from the car while it’s charging, you can’t walk away from your gas car while you’re pumping gas. Of course improvements in charging and battery tech will make it better, but people act like modern EV’s are wildly inconvenient and it’s not really the case.

If solid state batteries ever become mainstream they'll solve a lot of ev battery problems. They're about twice as energy dense, can charge way faster, and have almost no battery degradation. And because they're made of a solid material they have no way of catching on fire like a lithium ion battery. They're also much less resource intensive. So theoretically you now have a car that lasts forever besides maintenance. Toyota and VW are the two biggest car companies researching them. The portable speaker in the tacoma uses a solid state battery which doesn't sound like a whole lot but that's huge that a solid state has made it into production

We just sold our two-year-old lighting pro, which we sold after 7200 miles. Plus, we had free electricity, so we did not pay a single dime. Why did we sell? With it reading 239+ miles, driving 109 miles round trip with 1900 pounds, we would arrive home with 20 to 16 percent with an orange warning screen. AC use was kept to a minimum and was not enjoyable. The same trip was impossible in late fall and winter. In sub-30 temps, it would lose up to 60 miles, and you could get some of that back by keeping it plugged in and running for over 30 minutes. Fully charged and plugged in, the heater would pull a little over 5kw, which is why the heat was a range destroyer. We still have our Chevy bolt and greatly enjoy it, but if you plan to tow, an EV truck is not helpful for even the lightest loads, especially in the winter.

I agree 100%! Why are they jumping into full electric vehicles when hybrid’s are capable of doing it all! The battery technology isn’t there yet to rely on full electric, and it’s way too costly to produce these batteries or replace them in the vehicle. Baby steps!
@Scroll_Lock
@Scroll_Lock 4 ай бұрын
You're underestimating the power draw these EV require. There is no ICE engine that would charge the battery as you go along. This technology doesn't scale down like that and certainly wouldn't give you driving characteristics that would ever work on the road and around other vehicles. You're constructing a Rube Goldberg machine when an already extensively engineered and refined technology exists and is so much more reliable, durable, efficient and affordable to operate that it makes zero sense to go away from ICE or Diesel. Basically, a solution for a non-problem. I enjoy machines and technology and all the ways they can work also. EV's technology however, will always be for a specific use case and certainly not the future of all motor vehicle needs. Not even hybrids.

I was curious about the cost of charging an electric vehicle from home: I had to breakdown our electricity cost by kilowatt hour (I think that’s how I did it). We pay 9 cents a kilowatt hour during the night or “off peak” hours. So…70 kilowatts overnight would have been $6.30 USD. That seemed fantastic! Everything goes pear shaped when you have to use public charging: expense, availability.

This is a good review, this is a good reason why Edison Motors is going hybrid for their truck, you don’t need as many batteries, have your own charger so can extend your range. My thoughts are if these trucks had actual transmissions it may increase efficiency, like using snatch blocks when towing with a winch, allows you to tow more with less power. I liked the money saved on gas (though it cost me $5000 to have my garage outfitted with a charger and upgrade my wiring). I’m back in a gas/hybrid (PHEV). The EV absolutely sucks to travel with, it hardly ever gets what it should range wise as too many factors like wind, temperature, cargo/passengers, and even tires (winters) suck up so much range travelling. My roof ski box alone sucked 15%, my mountain bikes about the same. I simply couldn’t imagine how inefficient a EV truck would be on the highway. I’m so much happier with the plug in hybrid and wish they’d make trucks this way.

I agree with you. Electric trucks have their place. Towing shorter distances, like around town or to the local lake, this truck is perfect. If 45 minutes to charge doesn’t matter to you, then you will probably love this truck. I do have to disagree a little on maintenance. The electric truck has far less moving parts for sure, but my 2019 Ram 2500, with over 100,000 miles, has had very little maintenance costs. Oil changes, maybe spark plugs, but no other real issues. I also got a 10 year warranty with that truck. I would most definitely buy this truck except for the fact that I have to haul heavy loads, far in excess of this trucks capability, for fairly long distances all year round in cold temperatures averaging 10 to 20 degrees below zero, other wise, this truck would work for me on my ranch. I will consider this truck as a second vehicle for hauling hay and livestock around the ranch or maybe within a 100 mile radius.

If you used a fast charger at home, your electric bill would have been significantly higher. With the 110v charging you really need to take Monday to Friday 24hr per day charging to get to a full charge and add up each day. That would approximately give you a 1 day cost to charge with a 240v charger that charges in 10hrs. Sketchy maths…but it’s a reasonable guess. The 110v was throttling your charging costs so much that it isn’t a real number anyway.

The RAM-Charger is probably going to the proper Hybrid design model to use going forward for truck manufacturers. However I am not suggesting Ram’s will hold up to customer demands in the first few years because RAM is just terrible. There will be so many problems to start. However they “may” get that sorted and deliver a good product eventually. Either way this is probably the design that best serves the segment going forward. No one can look at EV trucks, no matter the size of the battery and tell me with a straight face that they can replace normal ICE trucks. It’s just not possible. The leap in battery technology required to make that happen is simply out of reach. Heavy EV’s are unsafe on roads made for vehicles weighing 2000lbs less than EV’s. If the Gov can amend the rules, they could make phenomenal engine/generators that could meet all environmental aims without the government picking a winner by forcing EV’s which simply don’t work. They certainly don’t work in cold climates either.

I am not that big fan of EV's but this truck is 200% better than the Cybertruck. The warranty is very good. Towing max is adequate. Looks like the Avalanche. I like it. BTW, WatchJRGo released today an one hour video on the top of line EV model in black. It cost $96k US. Looking forward to your tow test. As in life, there are always compromises. Have a great week Alex.

Never... Here's the thing, I have a 2024 Silverado Trail Boss LT w/3.0l LZ0 Duramax with a max towing capacity of 9000 lbs, and I have a travel trailer dry weight of 3377 lbs and a GVWR of 4479 lbs, I can take that truck, tow that travel trailer @65mph(sweet spot), and have a range of approx 325mi, refill my tank in 15min or less and be off for another 325mi, there isn't an EV on the planet that can do that... Additionally, my 2024 can have a range of up 650mi on a single tank(24gal) of fuel, depending on how it's driven of course, be fueled up in 15min or less and ready for another 650mi, and again, no EV can match that... EV's will NEVER be mainstream, they are at best, in town vehicles, and grocery getters, soccer mom vehicles, etc... EV's will NEVER be ready for primetime...

While the benefits of what these things can offer is nice the extremely long charge times are atrocious. Cold weather is also the enemy of batteries even if they have a heating function to keep them warmed up. Your range in very cold weather will always be worse than in the summer. They should stop trying to rely on just the battery alone and make it a hybrid. You don't need any fancy transmission or drivetrain to make it go anywhere. Just integrate a fuel operated generator up front that keeps the battery charged while you're driving. If Chinese automakers like BYD can pull it off than so can GM and Ford. They need to stop with the excuses and actually use their heads.

For what you pay for this vehicle, it should have a much larger range especially while towing. What is the point paying $80k for a truck that will take 8 hours to tow something 200 miles?

I think the fact that electric vehicles don't end up paying road charges via fueling up will come to a head and I then wonder how it will turn out then. EVs are rather chatty to their makers, so a record of all your driving is somewhere. Yes, many non-ev's have been found to do the same, but disabling that wouldn't stop the vehicle (shouldn't?). On an EV, I suspect you are now "like an expensive cell phone", in the loving hands of the tech (car) company.

Touch the wrong thing and goodbye. Insurance rates are outrageous. Because of no parts and expenses of repairs. Scotty is right on these. Junk. Besides GM has a terrible reputation for reliability. They know how, just can’t because of jerks in charge . How about tire wear and cost! Way more with these. No thanks. If I win lottery for 100 million then yes.
