In this video I have a look at a 2017 Chevrolet Traverse that came in with a code P0496 (evaporative emission system high purge flow) This is a pretty straight forward diagnosis and the good news is GM has an extended warranty campaign on these vehicles and you could possibly have it fixed for free. -Enjoy!

There's always someone bigger, better badder I suppose. I appreciate your humility. But I think your pretty hard to beat. You have an analytical mind and a can-do attitude and common sense. And common sense isn't very common these days. Plus you seem to be a nice guy with a good sense of humor. And you're honest, particular, and generous. I wish I could take my vehicles to you when it's stuff beyond my ability and tool depth. But I'm in Nebraska so my vehicles wouldn't make it that far even without mechanical problems! I enjoy you videos. Thanks for doing them.

@David Lewis I do remodeling and handyman work. I've also been doing more air conditioning work on phones with my friend who's been training me for several years now. Figuring stuff out is a large part of my life. I do all right but I know there are people like Eric and my friend who make me feel pretty stupid sometimes! Gotta admire a good brain. Btw, I only work on my car. And tg hats out of necessity as I can't usually afford the shop rates. But I will not open up an engine. I know my limitations.

@David Lewis It's interesting that there is a crossover from Eric's field to yours and to mine. And no doubt to many others too. A common ground that many of us who watch him work can identify with although we have different occupations. Figuring stuff out is built into us I think. The Bible says that we're made in God's image so I guess it makes sense that we are naturally bent toward troubleshooting/figuring stuff out. Unfortunately I think the modern trend toward many being lazy both physically and mentally makes a lot of people give up and lose interest before they tackle trying to solve the problems they encounter in their work. Sounds like you are not one of the lazy ones. That's great. There's a great deal of satisfaction in figuring things out, as you know. Keep up the good work!

I bought a set of Accel plug wires from Napa on the box it said less than 500 ohms per foot, when I got them home I checked them. They were closer to 1500 ohms per foot. I took them back and told the counter guy what the problem was. He told me the ohms would be less in a race engine application. I was surprised he said something so stupid. I got my money back and went to AutoZone and bought the cheapest they had only 200ohms per foot!

@@tomd5010 They had cylinder walls impregnated with 17% silicone.....the last step was an etching process that had the rings riding on a "wall of stone". I owned two. Rebuilt both with steel inserts. Bought the cars dirt cheap cause they was SHOT. My FAVORITE find about them was at a local machine shop. He had Vega blocks all over the place. He was contracted by the local Chevy dealer to fix them. And I noticed that a number of them that were ready to return to the dealer only had ONE insert in them. He said to me ....in so many words.....THAT GM WAS SOOOOOO CHEAP (HOW CHEAP?) THAT THEY WOULD ONLY PAY TO HAVE THE CYLINDERS THAT SHOWED SIGNS OF WEAR, BE SLEEVED!!! They removed the engine from the vehicle, sent it to him, and then with it down to a bare block, would only pay him to sleeve ONE cylinder. It was around 1975. I paid that guy $150 to machine the block, insert 4 new sleeves, and he handed me new rings for the pistons. Engine ran forever and never burned a drop of oil with the sleeves. Yes, I learned a lot about GM from that.

I've been wrenching from '98 to current and can count on one hand how many times the gas cap was actually the cause of an EVAP code. And like you, I was surprised each time! 1999 dodge ram 1500 extended cab! code read at autozone! guy doing the reading said "well I could sell you a gas cap but often the seal is just a bit dry, put some vaseline on the gasket see if that helps" Oddly enough someone at my house had some of that :) lubed it up and by golly it worked! at least till the catalytic converter plugged up 6 months later not sure if that was related. To recap: it was the gas cap and I just got advice instead of a gas cap from an auto parts store.

I have worked on automobiles doing drivability since 1987. I can count the number of gascaps I changed that were the prob on one hand and O2 has not been a major issue since 90's still some failures. It is the job of that scan tool "specially designed" and the sales man at auto zone and advance to sell you parts not diagnose or fix the car. And they are intentionally not taught diagnostic procedure on purpose. A part swapper trying to save money can spend more money if they dont actually know whats wrong :). BTW most stealerships hire part swappers to follow TSb's and not an actual diagnostician.

Definitely a definitive diagnosis . And you showed how you came to that. Thank you good video. Every car for sale on Facebook says check engine light on needs o2 sensor. Or no check engine light because they just cleared codes and monitors are not up yet

And you didn't have to bring out Big Nasty, or the Brakleen from Napper, "not a sponsor," or the Pico, or the load test bulbs, or the "known Troublesome Tree from Generous Motors," or.............! Quick and easy diagnostic test and part replacement. Nice touch with the after repair verification testing including the all important trip around town. Shoulda had Mrs. O. Coulda gone cruising!

But he did use the sheep juice Fluid film. I've found that I use it on almost every vehicle I work on now since Eric O introduced it to me.

Funny enough for my 2006 Chevy HHR it was the gas cap LOL. Figured that out when putting on the gas cap it would just spin and spin and never click. Replaced it and yay it spun and clicked. Also after clearing the EVAP code it never came back and this was 5 years ago. So from time to time it really is the gas cap :)

Ah the benefits of a big fancy scan tool...after years of no updates to the one my shop owns I bought my own a month or so ago...Snap-On Solus Legend...so bleeping handy to have a diagnostic tool that HELPS a tech like your big fancy green scanner. So far my Legend has helped solve some silly little things with it's ability to reach out to the internets for advice....so worth it.

Just make sure the Got Dan Gas cap is on tight! So many times I had one at the dealer or on my own junk was a loose cap. If the gas cap O ring is not messed up looking its fine.

I work at an advance when I see an evap code I say to tighten your gas cap and drive, if that doesn’t work go to a shop.

Had one time my 02 Ford Ranger the gas cap caused a code and it was supper cold and the Seal on the cap wasn't very Pliable to say and didn't seal . All I done was loosen the cap and parked the truck inside my heated garage and next day no more check engine light for Evac code! Same cap ten years later and still no problem!! By The way know what you mean Eric about the cold and snow we have had some unusual cold weather here in Southern Missouri in April too!

I always check the purge valve for carbon when I get those flow during non Purge codes. If the canister is coming apart, it will come back with the same code.
