Get Unstuck & Escape Side Control with Simple Ideas That Really Work

Today's BJJ technique video comes from a question about how to escape side control from a heavier opponent who's squeezing tight. Before I get into the video I just gotta say. Learning to escape a heavier opponent starts by training with heavier people and learning not to freak out. Sounds too simple of course. But it's super difficult.
With that said, this escape from a traditional head and arm side control seen in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu will work whether the person is heavier or smaller.
The key to the escape is to get the person off balance. And honestly that is what the main focus of this video is about. How to off balance the top person so we can escape their side control.
Hope the video is useful.

@anonymous makes sense. I know what I can do once I break guard. My issue is when do I want to attack. From the side or do I move to mount or try to get to the back. The downside of just being new.

We just covered side control escapes yesterday at class and this got brought up. While framing against the hip worked at times, more often than not it didn't. I might have been exhausted, but against one guy it did absolutely nothing and felt lost. I'll give this a shot next class and see how it fares. Thanks Chewie!

One of my coaches who's a brown belt is getting ready for a comp so he had me start on top with side control on him, this dude let me get situated in the best position possible, even started with his lapel fed under his armpit. I've never been so impressed in my life when with relatively no force, this dude maneuvered my pressure/arms and was out of my control in less then 10 seconds each time. I'm still dumbfounded considering we're the exact same size and weight.

My 12 year old daughter in her 3rd class got put in this position with a slightly larger girl...the game was the top person was supposed to hold down the bottom person and the bottom person was supposed to try and escape. Like you stated, sometimes it can be impossible and my daughter couldnt move or escape out, she was extremely demoralized and nearly quit jiu-jitsu on the spot. the feeling of someone squeezing hard in this position and her feeling of helplessness really took a mental toll (she was trying with all her might to escape). I watched it all unfold, thankfully the purple belt instructor saw what was happening and carefully addressed the group on the issue of being a good partner and not controlling someone so much they cant move or work any escape.

My wife and I joined a bjj gym a few months ago and about 1.5 months in we went to a class and she was super tired from day to day stuff. So she was just rolling lightly and taking her time to conserve energy. Funnily, she found she did better overall, even against stronger guys. Taking your time, breathing, and looking for openings is one huge thing I don't see people talk about enough!
@psyience3213

@@projectdren806 100% you will do better when you slow down. I remember when i was a new white belt being injured, and just playing a lazy game and doing really well. Then my goals changed to instead of winning, or just not losing, to just not getting tired. Like 4 years later that's still my goal for rolls. Plays in with the efficiency principle. On the same coin though, at some point you have to slow down and be more technical in order to improve, but that also frequently results in people doing worse and it's very demoralizing, especially the longer you go being a spazzy white belt. Best thing you can learn to do as a new white belt and relax. You either know a technique to use or you're using basic principles of frames and angles and space, but no explosiveness and spazzing, that shit holds you back hardcore. Save that for a comp.
@projectdren806
@projectdren806 3 жыл бұрын
@@psyience3213 Yeah for sure! We have only been about 3 months but being patient really helps. I've rolled with a few blue belts, and while I can tell they "catch and release" me throughout the roll, I don't tire out immediately anymore and I can defend at least some of the stuff they are throwing at me lol. Like you said, the goal is to survive! Sometimes (often) that means taking a moment to breathe.

Love your vids mate. Adam is a robot, scary to go on the mat with him. :) "Love you Adam BTW" Assume you get to 4:45, is it possible to go for Kimura? or too risky?
@Chewjitsu
@Chewjitsu 3 жыл бұрын
It'll be hard to hit from that position. You'll be in bottom side with a figure 4. They'll probably counter it and stop it easy. And if they know it they could armbar you. So I wouldn't attempt a Kimura till I got to half guard.
