I encourage my students to try seminars, visit other schools, roll open mats, and invite friends to rolls. Just be respectful and remember that you have a home base which you represent so always be nice and respectful 💯👍 I love sharing my BJJ with good people who respect our rules when they visit us 🙏🏻

I appreciate you doing this video, Chewy. Recently, my professor and his wife (who manages the gym) banned a blue belt at my gym because he cross trained at another gym. This gym in particular has former members of my home gym. The law was laid down at the gym I train at stating that anyone who trained at that other gym would be banned. It's just an overall petty situation that I'm doing everything I can not to be apart of.

People are weird. I am an active member of two different Jiu Jitsu gyms because I have a weird schedule and want to be able to train every day. My friend owns a gym that is too far away for me to train at regularly but they have a cool open mat I can make it to weekly. I wear rash guards from one place at another, I shout-out all of my gyms in post-fight interviews, I try to bring the things I learn out in the world to all of my training partners. It's how I've arranged my life, and I have so many friends and resources to pull from because of it. I'm so glad that my coaches are cool and not this kind of insecure.

I Had a former coach who got mad that I went back to my old coach years ago. At first,I stated I wasn't going to go back. But life happens and I told him I had no choice because the schedule with his classes got me out too late to make it to work on time. At that time I was working a different job on the night shift. When his classes ended I was always late for work. So I explained to him that I didn't want to go back,but I had no choice because of my work schedule. At the time my mother was still alive. I told her I always loved my coach like a father figure. But he was angry at me for going back to my old coaches school. I'll never forget what my late mother said. She said"Listen,if your coach really loves &cares for you like a son. He will look past it and ALWAYS love you. And he'll always want to be a part of your life. If he holds a grudge &he stays mad at you. Than That's not love. That's his Ego& that's who the f#ck he was all along."So I never bothered with him again. I've always been honest with people. I even told my coach I went back to that I said some mean things about him. That I shouldn't have said to my other coach. I knew I was wrong to say those things. I was younger at the time,and said things I really didn't mean back then. My coach that I went back to not only accepted my apology. But was not mad AT ALL. He said "It's ok Brother,we all make mistakes,and there's no need to be mad and hold onto that."Now go train!" Thanks for posting this video Chewy. It really hit Home.

My experiences in jujitsu with most of my coaches has been awesome! I am so glad that you made this video, I can relate to a lot of people in the comment section. my experience is too long to put in a comment section, put it this way, this culty way of doing things is not worth my hard earned money, it left me very unmotivated to go back to the culty jujitsu lifestyle, it’s been since April of 2020 since I trained, and only 1 true friend has kept in contact with me, after many years of volunteering and dedication, without me having to contact them first. Watching you and a couple other people I look up to in the BJJ community is what keeps me motivated to keep looking! I’m looking at a gym that’s right in my city that I was told a few years back “it’s too culty” by one of the coaches at my old culty gym! 💪😂

I believe we've had this conversation before Chewie. My old professor hated that I would go to other places to train. He was afraid that I was "taking techniques" and "making him look bad". I never thought of it as a problem because i just loved training so much and just wanted to see how other places were. Plus i always thought it was a benefit to bring stuff back for my teammates. He didn't say these things to me when I was a blue and purple belt, it only became a problem when I was promoted to brown belt. Long story short I left and just did things differently. I have no hard feelings and yeah I was sad/hurt when I left but it was for the best.

In my opinion, train wherever. At the end of the day every gym has different mindsets and philosophies on everything. From what submissions are the most useful, if you should use side control or mount, etc. You can't become the best by not testing yourself against others and learning everything you can. Just remember if you say, "I normally go to blank gym" Then everything you say and do reflects on that gym. And if you compete, it is good to let your coach know, because coaches tend to know about all of the surronding gyms(And probably want to help you). They can tell you if it's worth your time or who the best coaches there are, and so on. But if your coaches turn you away from everyone else it is important to remember you are a client, you can go anywhere you want and pay whatever coach or gym you want to pay.

Well, in my opinion you are totally right, but I am not sure about the face to face. I mean, in a relationship you are engaged to someone else and this is not the case, unless you are very close to your coach. But if they were close like this, Miguel wouldnt be so shocked about his reaction. For me, in this situation, the face to face and telling to this coach you are leaving will only bring to conflict

In the early 2000s, someone here put together televised events under K-1 rules. I heard a guy who had a leadership position in the National Martial Arts Federation say: ''We'll have a meeting to decide how to punish the athletes who were part of that circus''. They were probably upset they didn't receive any money. Some of those fighters told the federation to F off, and ended up in Glory.

I can see it both ways. I encourage my students to visit other schools and attend seminars. That said, if you want rank mine needs to be your home school. I'm fine as long as its not costing you classes at my place or costing my school financially. When it comes time to test or level up I expect the student to do things the way we teach in my association. Most of the people who bitch about this tend to travel all over and train just a little bit everywhere but are never consistent anywhere. They also associate the word loyalty with cult and they don't like the thought of paying to train. If they do pay they think they own the school. Your relationship/dog example is a good one. You are free to talk to everyone and walk around but if you start hanging around other women too much I'm sure your wife/GF would be too keen on it. If you moved in with someone else part time and were helping them with their bills I'm sure the relationship with your current girl would end quickly. I think these days its really popular to see things from a students prospective and call everyone who expects a bit of loyalty a "toxic coach"

Men by natural instinct are territorial, meaning "protective" of their students, "provide" the students with the best knowledge & don't want their secrets shared with potential competitors. They will "proclaim" the students by showing up in their corner for fights/tournaments as a team. Men are 10x more territorial than women. Most women don't own & run jiujitsu gyms. Idk man... my favorite bjj guys travel the world and do seminars, those top level players all have cross training in common. If you stay in house & never experience outside the box you can't grow.

Hi chewy, I train at a gym that has MMA, no GI bjj and GI bjj all taught by different coaches, GI bjj coach owns the gym and has the final say over rankings, my schedule doesn't really allow for much GI training so I train more no GI than GI, my no gi coach thinks I'm a blue belt, along with a few other people who train more no GI than GI, now of course it's natural for me to be better in no GI, I have no problem with the head coach not promoting me, or at least I would if he would let me train in the advanced class there, there's a beginners gi class and an advanced GI class, recently there's been an added beginners gi class at a time I can make and I go there once a week and dominate, I'm almost always the smallest in the room 5'2 55kgs and I've never been challenged, which isn't impressive of course it's a beginners class, I've competed and won gold a few times and feel like head coach might just not like me or something at this point, I'd just like your perspective because I'm not the only one in this situation at my gym and was wondering if it was normal

Weird, shouldn’t no-gi coach talk to gi coach about this ? Ask the no-gi coach about it, it’s not embarrassing or out of line to ask about requirements for belts. You can make next move from there, remember that you are the one who is PAYING to be there
@jiujitf0018
@jiujitf0018 Жыл бұрын
This is a tough one. As a general rule I will not promote people who do strictly no gi training. Fact of the matter is, a belt is a gi rank, there are no “ranks” in no gi. Yes, both are Jiu Jitsu, but my requirement is that a student at least train in the gi sometimes, even if just once a week, because there are so many intricacies and details associated with breaking grips, passing guard, etc that are different than no gi. That said, Danaher will promote strictly for no gi training, and no one doubts the skill and level of his athletes. I think perhaps if you have your no gi coach talk to the gi coach about allowing you in the advanced class so you can get some gi time, that may be the way to go. That way he’ll get to see how you handle rolling in the gi and will have a better foundation for evaluation.
@jiujitf0018

@Kodiak Combat Collective Ah, I missed that part. May just be a matter of being “noticed” then. I wouldn’t automatically jump to the conclusion (that he theorized) of the head instructor not liking him, unless there is a specific incident that would lead him to that conclusion. Judging by the number of classes provided this is probably a larger gym, and sometimes people just get overlooked. Communication between instructors is key in this respect and I would still recommend talking to his no gi coach, since he is more familiar with him. Perhaps that coach can learn from the head instructor what the issue is (IF there is one). There is more that goes into promotion than just who you can beat on the mat. There may be another area that the head instructor thinks he can improve in. Also, he says other people are in a similar situation, so it’s possible that his head instructor is just slow to promote (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing).

@@jiujitf0018 thanks for your response, I'm completely fine with not being promoted, my head coach definitely is slow to promote which is something I like, my problem is really with being made to do the beginners class, I've never really been challenged against much bigger people, or people who have been going for longer, which again isn't impressive, but I feel that it should warrant a move up to the advanced class considering my experience rolling with blue belts and up in no GI, while there are other people who haven't been promoted when they probably should be, to my knowledge no one (who should be promoted) has been held back from the advanced class, that said, your point about the intricacies with grips and GI specific moves is a good one, if that's what's holding me back it's understandable, but still frustrating I guess, I feel I should at least be allowed to see if I am out of my depth because the grips aren't presenting a challenge in the beginners class

Miguel's coach probably watches this channel and just hit unsubscribe lol . Definitely agree with Chewy, it seems like very insecure behavior.

I think dropping in at other places is totally fine. But just like real life romantic relationships, open ones don't work out long term. Loyalty comes on a gradient, and if there is no loyalty then it's just awkward and building a relationship with your students is difficult, because it always begs the obvious questions. If there's too much loyalty it becomes toxic and illogical. In the training sense, you should have one main coach at a time that is cool with you going to other open mats, seminars etc. But if you're spending more than 20% of your time at other schools, it's understandable for your coach (and the other coaches) to not care much about you and your progress, both on a personal level and a business level. Higher belts usually become part of the dojo, start teaching etc, that requires trust and again, a reasonable sense of loyalty.

I also think a lot of people pretend to be tough and say things like "This coach needs to chill, he doesn't own me, I can do whatever I want I'm paying him". But these people often don't have the attitude to get to be a coach, let alone understand one. I bet you 80% of the people on the more extreme side (you should be able to train as much as you want in other places and it's not any of their business) would be soooooo butthurt if THEY were a coach passionate about teaching their students, and when they thought they were doing an excellent job and were all the rage, they find out their star students are also training somewhere else. People are like this all the time, in open relationships too. They talk tough when they're on the receiving end, and then when they're in the position where it affects them they go hypocritical rage mode.

You’re missing a big reason bro, Reason : bjj schools didn’t make much money , you would train a fighter up , then they leave and make money and don’t give the gym that made them any credit. It’s how they put food on the table. I can understand that .

I started training in the late 90s and this BS was out of control. I had one main school that was actually a horrible academy (I only trained there because it was close to my house) and I would train at other academies from time to time and my instructor would be a total dick head about it, I sort of got black listed in the local BJJ community… being a “Creonte” was forbidden in those days.
