The best part of this wasn't even the question. It was that half guard pass. Many go for the knee-cut to side control, but why not skip it all together and go the other way to three quarter mount and then full mount.

I'm not a huge fan of the knee cut. It's a great pass, and I teach it. But I've had my knee yanked around in it. So unless I'm in a very particular position, I tend to avoid it.

I take a bit of a different tack here as a smaller player. Even with a 2-on-1 grip, pulling up only to push back down is still a huge energy expenditure for me relative to the other guy simply holding their hands together. What I do is I take an elbow and wedge it where my opponent's hands meet then I use my body weight to scrape the other guy's hand down and to the side with my elbow. To me, if it's elbow + gravity vs hands, elbow wins. However, I take Chewy's route at the end and I never take mount anymore unless I already have an arm secure and I'm in a position to immediately take a high mount and wedge a knee under at least one armpit. Saves a lot of energy at the end by just a bit of planning up front.

Love the detail about pulling the arm away from the body first to weaken it. Makes perfect sense, but not intuitive. I will be using this in my rolls tonight! Thanks Chewster!

Thanks Coach. Thank you for the little detail regarding grabbing the wrist where the radius and ulna meet the row of proximal carpals. Terrific leverage there. Always learning from you. Be well. Nikolas

Just last night I sat in mount for 30 seconds trying to do something clever to no avail. I needed this, thanks!

bro please tell me you or someone you know has hyperextended a finger joint and didn’t have to stay off the mat too long. Kicking myself for not taping up these 42 year old fingers. My professor had to pop the top joint back straight. Let me know your experience please. Waiting in the ER right now.
