Chicago is famous for their horns but anyone who listens to them at all knows that Terry Kath was the soul of the band. His untimely passing really tore a hole in their music for me as they then drifted off into featuring soft pop ballads.

Peter Cetera is singing lead on this one. As for the sound during the guitar solo…A wah-wah pedal, or simply wah pedal, is a type of effects pedal designed for electric guitar that alters the timbre of the input signal to create a distinctive sound, mimicking the human voice saying the onomatopoeic name "wah-wah".

The horns are an important part of their sound, and the trombonist, James Pankow, wrote a lot of their songs, including several of their biggest hits. He was also the principle arranger of the horn parts.

In the 70s I bought this single and album. This was known as Brass Rock (not horn rock) and they and Blood Sweat and Tears were the best two bands. This is known for Terry Kath's killer guitar solo. The best ever recorded anywhere at the time. The main riff was a jam in the studio after they had finished recording at 25 or 6 to 4 in the morning and became their biggest hit. Thanks for doing this, but now I'm a Band-Maid fan. The sad end was he died early after playing Russian roulette with a loaded gun. It's the regular band- best album Chicago 5.

Great reaction, and great suggestion by Steven. I saw Chicago in the fall of 1969 at VaTech for $7 in a 3,000 seat auditorium. It was my first concert by a "real" band. I was totally blown away and the brass was so very great. Fantastic! What a way to start college!

Just like me! My high school sweetheart was on the committee to choose a band for a big concert at our big regional high school. They had originally chosen Stevie Wonder who turned out not to be available so it came down to two other acts (don't remember the other choice) including Chicago, then CTA or Chicago Transit Authority and I said "GET CHICAGO!!". The show was just as good as that Tanglewood performance and was in fact also my first big name live concert, I was 16 at the time. Gov. Livingston Reg HS in Berkeley Hgts, NJ.

Underrated? How so? "Chicago is one of the longest-running and most successful rock groups, and one of the world's best-selling groups of all time, having sold more than 100 million records." Concerning brass sections: from about the same time is the Dutch group Ekseption who, like several other at the time, mixed classical music with rock. Check "Toccata" live video from 1973. Also Frank Zappa included brass in his music, especially in the 1960s. If you are not familiar with Zappa, he covered all kinds of genres, mixing everything, and never cared if it was appropriate. He released 60+ albums 1966-1993. For a short video clip from the 1960s (there are not many) check "Oh, in the sky" BBC 1968 (but all songs are totally different).

Great review! The early artists were true musicians who created their work without the help of autotune. Their creativity flourished, and no band wanted to mimic another. Originality was key, and we benefited from that diversity. Unfortunately, today we see a prevalence of cookie-cutter bands and extensive sampling. It’s a sad shift, and we’re paying the price for it.
