I love the Englewood neighborhood. I love this walk around the area. I’ve mentored many students here & so happy they are remodeling. Thanks for doing a neighborhood walk here. Many people wouldn’t but I’m glad it was you. It makes me proud to be able to see & appreciation Chicago.

I use to spend so much time visiting family in the 80’s in Englewood. Seeing how 63rd and Halsted has transformed over the years is still shocking to see, mostly because I haven’t been in that area much over the years. But I’m glad to see the positive changes coming to the community!

They have really changed 63rd and Halsted. I really like the changes to the area. I think they are building condominiums or more modern apartments in the area as well. Such a wonderful sight to see. Looking forward to visiting again to see what else they do!

@maxinepreston7601 Hey! How are you? I am doing well - it is 2:14 pm here and COLD LOL. It is 23 degrees today. They are definitely putting so much into the Englewood neighborhood - it is so nice and I love the work they have done so far. I hope you have a very wonderful evening and that it warms up soon for you all! As I hope we have warmer weather in the near future lol! Has the flooding stopped there? I truly hope it has 🧡
@maxinepreston76014 күн бұрын
Yes Englewood definitely looks on the up. There's still a lot of flooding about and it will get worse when the snow melts because the water has nowhere to go. We haven't got snow here but Wales and Northern areas have. Its going to be -5 tonight. Where the UK is our weather is decided by the jet stream. So one half of the country has snow and others don't!. Not as bad as the poor souls in California, losing their whole lives work. I hope if you have relatives there they are safe. Enjoy the rest of your day, its now 9.pm here now. Take care.

@@maxinepreston7601 I was hoping the flooding would be gone by now but I totally understand that. It gets like that here at times. But probably not how you all experience it! -5 degrees? I had no clue it was that cold there! We have freezing cold but not every year. I hope you are staying warm during this time. I truly hope it warms up very soon. And yes - I am praying for Los Angeles a lot. So many people have been devastated by this fire. I pray they are able to recover and rebuild. Thank you so much and if you have relatives there - I pray they are okay as well. It is definitely heartbreaking to see so many people lose their homes 🧡🧡

Grew up in Englewood. It's amazing how much has changed in the over 50 plus years since my dad bought our first house there. 63rd & Halsted was a thriving shopping corridor with Sears & Roebuck as it's commercial anchor in the 60's & 70's. Now it only has the little shopping center with the new Kennedy King College as it's anchor. All my family and friends I grew up with in the neighborhood are either dead, or long gone from Englewood now....

This is still amazing to hear. My mom talks about different things on the southside - she grew up in the Ickes and shared so many stories about the mom and pop shops they had. The theatre that was in the Bronzeville area and etc. I love hearing about the community and learning about how things were. I love that. A Sears? It was where Kennedy King is now? I love the changes to the community and the rebuilding they are doing. But I would’ve loved to see that back then! We have so much history and culture than we realize until speaking to someone who actually lived it.

Nice video. Of all the shopping centers in Chicago proper, 63rd and Halsted area once pulled in more retail money than anywhere else, except in the downtown Loop area. That record was held, probably in the 1920s until about 1955. A lot of retail business started leaving after 1952, when the Evergreen Park Shopping Center opened up at that time, at 95th and Western. The area struggled to stay competitive and had limited success. Sometime in the early 1960s, they closed off the streets to make it a pedestrian shopping outdoor mall. They even put up some of the same style of bright, fancy street lights as had been popular in the Loop area. Sadly, the crime situation got out of hand in the 1960s and beyond. I forget when Sears left. They stayed as long as they possibly could, but was losing money badly. Read an account of the Englewood Theatre. There was also, the Southtown Theatre. They were literally movie palaces in their day. At one time (1940s or so) Englewood was known as the "community of churches" because they had more evangelical churches in that area, than anywhere else in the world. I really hope the area rebuilds to its former glory. If they can take care of the crime problem (1% of the people causing 99% of the problems) I think it will revitalize very quickly. It has that potential. I remember the 1950s, when it was a great place for all people to live. I know it can happen again!

How many grocery stores were there? I’ve been hearing that it was a Sears - I think they should bring back a department store or something for the community. Huck Finn? Is that the breakfast restaurant? I think I saw one in McKinley Park recently.
