The phrase "riding shotgun" originated from the American stagecoach era, when an armed guard would ride alongside the driver to protect against bandits and hostile Native Americans. The guard would typically carry a break-action shotgun, known as a coach gun.

It’s funny, hard to relate being 3rd generation Chicano. My father’s parents born in Pacoima in the 1920’s and my mother’s parents born in Culver City in the 1920’s. Neither side had any connection with this type of “culture”. Hard working, strong discipline, strong fathers. Many of our family members fought in WW II and Vietnam. We were never on the street to be with this way of life. That gangster life or mentality was never part of our family, but hard work and good values. Excellent documentary but it’s really different in our large family about what the Mexican American life really is from the 1920’s -1970’s. We could never relate to this, despite what anyone would say.

I think in the USA it doesn’t refer to Europe at all. It’s another way of referring to Latinos and mostly Mexicans, Salvadorians, Puerto-Ricans, Dominicans, and Cubans which are big diasporas in USA. And people in USA would usually confuse Spain with Mexico like as if they had the same food etc.
@Sven-c4tАй бұрын

They’re all Hispanic or Iberian Americans.. USA is the one country that makes it about race tbh. In Iberian america there are millions of whites, blacks, mestizos, etc just like the USA. In fact, people hate on Spain but they mixed with the indigenous population more than the English and colonists.
@markp7567Ай бұрын
I’m from LA and I think I can answer this. As I think you know, Hispanic is anyone from or descended from a Spanish speaking country. Latino in the US can be different from what Europeans think a Latino is. In the US, a Latino is usually from or descended from any country of Latin America. In Europe, many people from any country with a Latin based language consider themselves Latinos, like Spaniards, French, Italians, etc. Many white Hispanics/Latinos in the US do not want to be identified simply as “white”, as to not be mistaken for non Latino whites, because they are proud of and want to represent their Hispanic and/or Latino identity. My dad was born in Argentina. His parents were from Slovenia. He is 100% white in race, but he feels and considers himself 100% Latino. He identifies himself to people as both a Hispanic and Latino, and identifies himself the same on any government form here in the US.
