this piece is absolutely GREAT!!! it has this old japanese video game kinda vibe to it which I absolutely love, brings back childhood memories... everything here is top notch and heart squeezing - melody, incredible harmony, bass riffs, sax, funky fusion guitar playing, Dave's drums and of course Chick's synth improvisations - gotta love this song

I got the exact same vibe! It reminds me of the snes game UN Squadrons music.

Funnily enough, it was written as a demo track to show off the capabilities of a Japanese synthesiser, the Yamaha SY-99 (the other demo track was written by Patrice Rushen...)!

Funky and smooth, J.P.s bass work is awesome here as well, he sits in so well in the pocket, and he leaves the open spaces for the other players to shine in. That's what a pro does! He gives that damn yamaha J.P. signature a hell of workout though, right?

I love how these guys are supporting each other. Nobody gets in nobody's way. Well, espeically nobody gets in Chick's way. And I love the way Gemballe does some simple guitar comping, I mean, he is such a great guitar player and yet he doesn't mind to do simple Strat-like twacks. Fantastic team!

You are absolutely correct. But as you said, it is all about perception. Now, I may perceive 80s influence in Chick's music as "cheesy" or "industrial", and it is exactly what I wanted to point out. It's my point of view, not to be accepted as an invariable truth, since nothing in music is exempt from personal opinion. What you can say objectively is that Chick's virtuosity as well as all the other musicians' is present, since this is not commercial or pop music. It's just another trend.

Honestly, no one, no color, no ethnicity is funkier to be honest. But then again others have different funk. Enjoy all the flavors, but how about, there may be funkier, but no group as virtuosic on their instruments and as funky as these dudes.....at least IMO.

considering our last exchange could you blame me. anyway. i live in the ATL so all i hear is (besides soldier boy and snap) is country and gospel. not really much of a jazz scene. a far cry from the NYC scene i'm use to. actually they do have a kinda "jazz light" scene( what i call it anyway) but its really underground. although, lotsa jazz cats live hear and you can go 2 certain bars on any given night and see chambers or royster or lil jon roberts shredding a set in an impromptu jam session.
