I’m always amazed at the Level of control Steve Gadd has. Never overplays, yet contributes to the overall intensity level of the group in his own stylistic ways. Genius! The interplay between all the musicians here is phenomenal. My favorite part is during the guitar solo - amazing interplay between he and Chick, but it is also between all other members between themselves as duos as well as the entire group. It’s like that all have 5 ears! I appreciate all 24 minutes of this!

I caught up with Gadd backstage after a gig with the North Texas State University 1:00 band back in the early 80s. I told him I first heard him on chick’s leprechaun album and loved how he somehow seemed to play the tune’s melodies on the kit note for note. He responded that he learned a lot about playing drums from chick.

Hm, interesting. We the family disagree! @Jazz-life if only you could ask Chick. Steve was more than well-fitted. You do understand that Chick has a certain role in Steve's style, right? Steve learned many things from him.

It's sometimes easy to forget just how formidable a drummer Steve Gadd has been - and on evidence of this performance, still is - on the drum set, particularly when we have such an array of impressively explosive drummers out there now. It's only when you watch a video like this that you realise where it ALL came from. So much of his playing has inspired generations of drummers. A remarkable achievement. Long live SG.

Something else to be said about Chick is: how he LISTENS. As the music grooves ahead, you can see how Chick attunes himself to his fellow players---eyes roving, ears open. Notice, for example, the intimate way Chick digs into what Lionel is putting out. Chick happily sustains Lionel's energy, but he also invites L into what appears to be a spontaneous duet. You can see it all from 9:00 to 12:00. Their shared contact deepens what the moment offers. On this day---2/14/2021---it looks like Chick is sending Lionel a valentine.

In the shower of well-deserved praise for the band, don’t forget Steve Wilson. His subtle use of space and confident phrasing set a high bar for the solos that followed. Without drawing attention to himself, he helped the tight arrangement to breathe shifting the music into a higher gear. That’s the sign of a master.

I became familiar with the guitarist Lionel Loueke from a concert on KZbin. He was playing with Herbie Hancock, Nathan East, and Vinnie Colaiuta at a jazz fest in Basel, Switzerland. Then when I saw that he was on the Chinese Butterfly album, that was all the more reason to buy it. I have a question about an effect that I’m hearing on his guitar starting at around 10:18. If I didn’t know better I would’ve thought that Chick was the one using the effect. Can someone tell me what effect that is? It’s definitely on at around 10:18. It might be on before that. Corea and Gadd can do no wrong!

Amazing group all around. I can't get over how Steve and Chick just seem to get better with age. I will say that what I like about Steve's playing in this performance is that he's playing with the percussionist and not over the percussionist. Too many drummers tend to do that.

Hey, props to whoever mixed this live recording. Everything sits nice, has it's own space, nothing's drowning anything else out. That's not always the case, is it?

Only got to see Chick Corea perform twice, but so glad I did. What an amazing talent. Thank you for the gift of music you shared with the world.

Absolutely fantastic ensemble performance. Steve bringin the pain as always. He plays so hard and is so solid. I love Chick's expressions during the tune. You can tell he's so happy with whats being created. Beautiful.

Steve's switch to that groove at 20:30 is bloody awesome, keeping the clave timing in it - yeah!
