Pre-order here: amzn.to/3hMi3pl www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2018/07/carl-zimmer-she-has-her-mother-s-laugh/561710/ article book review excerpts - "But chimeras are not just oddities. You surely know one. In pregnant women, fetal stem cells can cross the placenta to enter the mother’s bloodstream, where they may persist for years. If Mom gets pregnant again, the stem cells of her firstborn, still circulating in her blood, can cross the placenta in the other direction, commingling with those of the younger sibling. Heredity can thus flow “upstream,” from child to parent-and then over and down to future siblings. Carl Zimmer's new book She Has Her Mother’s Laugh makes the subject of genes and heredity accessible to non-scientists. It covers many subjects, such as royal inbreeding, eugenics, mitochondrial DNA vs. chromosomal DNA, and the weird things that can happen along the way as a new human is constructed. To focus in is to find chromosomes playing all sorts of tricks. Take, for example, chimeras. To the ancient Greeks, the Chimera was a fire-breathing hybrid monster; to a biologist, chimeras are organisms that comprise cells from two different individuals. Ranchers are familiar with one type of chimera, the freemartin, which results when a cow carries opposite-sex twins. Connected by a shared placenta, the fetal calves exchange stem cells. The bull calf grows up into a more or less normal bull, while the heifer-the freemartin-has undeveloped ovaries and exhibits masculinized behavior (and is particularly tasty on the grill). Where does one calf end and the other begin? Zimmer describes a bizarre twist on the free-martin: a girl with different-colored eyes and ambiguous genitals who appeared at a Seattle genetics clinic. Her ovaries proved to have only XX chromosomes-typical female-but her other tissues were mixtures of XX and XY. Further analysis showed that she had started out as opposite-sex twins. But early in development, the two embryos had fused, becoming a single, highly unusual child. Like a verse from the old Ray Stevens novelty song “I’m My Own Grandpa,” this girl was her own twin brother.

Those siblings are SCARY, they certainly look like the scary kids tropes, they totally look beyond human. And i love this btw, it's rare and ultra rare as mcs and could make for terrifying foes, characters that seem to have overcome humanity seems to live in their own world, only the siblings seem to understand each other and i love their connection and how they're also casual and loving, and dont need to act godly all the time. You cant hope but try to think whats in their heads, the line of "we're gonna help pass thru it" was brutal. The inspiration on Cersei n Jaime and shockingly on shingeki no kyojin is very apparent. I wasnt vibing with the cgi at 1st but by the end i was totally HOOKED and i wish i could rush to it without reading the 2 books, the siblings acting is so damn amazing and they're also very pretty, almost hypnotic. Mcavoy looks especially angelical and inhuman (especially on the voice scene with granny), he also looks shockingly young and boyish, makes it hit how aging sucks.

That was also the first role I saw him in, and before that I had no idea who he was. But it was also this role that convinced me how good an actor he is. He has just the right balance between maturity and vulnerability for Leto, suggesting that he is a character dealing with something far beyond his years. I think they would never have found a child actor with the capabilities to play a pre-born convincingly, i.e. without it coming across as creepy. And I think this extraordinary role effectively launched his career - after Children of Dune, you started seeing him everywhere.

But the film media isn't even talking about or doing articles about the REST of the DUNE productions like the Syfy 3day series each of Dune &Children of Dune which they should also discuss, the day & age of DISMISSING TV movies vs theater ones is OVER. They should ask those actors too about their interest in the new film, Villeneuve & Herbert. All I see is disinterested interviews with Kyle MacLachlan(eta nah he does get a little excited about Dune as story & hopes for how it should get presented) or Lynch or Jordorosky of all people, who seemed kinda just jealous rude hoping the film fails hearing a report of his short interview about Dune2020, him using the cover of saying dune is too hard to produce properly it'll be a miracle Dune2020 is a success. from his POV

(presumably it made him feel better about the "un-adaptability" of Dune in to movies, altho I'd say that statement has been more or less disproven precisely by the Children of Dune adaptation...)" In addition after looking in to his cinematographic history, I find myself wondering why does aynbody to this day, actualy give a fuck about the guy. Even though in the book they are nine years old I really like the actor and actress for Leto and Ghanima they played their roles for the characters perfectly. I really wished we got God Emperor before the Sci Fi channel's parent company merged with General Electric's owned company NBC that way could have seen James McAvoy play as the God Emperor and see some flashbacks between him and a aged Ghanima that would of been emotionally sad to see with Leto II having to see the last years of his sister while he keeps living having to continue the golden path for over 3,000 years while slowly transforming into a worm. James McAvoy was the perfect actor for Leto II and nothing will change that.
