Yes, trail is nice to follow, but then we wouldn't have seen those views! There is so much to explore in NZ if you are willing to head off track.

We do too! It's just getting above the bushline which is sometimes a bit of a struggle (need to work on our teleportation device)

You live in a beautiful place. I'm curious whether most of NZ is as sparsely populated as the areas you guys hike. I'm not sure I could handle the total absence of people! And I didn't even know that I liked people all that much.

Most of our travels have been in the South Island which is home to about a quarter of the population. There is a lot of farm land, and smaller cities (Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island, pop 400k ish). Tramping here is very different to the AT, there are no roads, no traffic noise except for the occasional helicopter, and no cellphone reception. We enjoy tramping alone, but it can be a little unnerving to be out there on solo trips for too long.

Everything is holding up pretty well. We both really love out packs. The tent and sleeping bag are doing great (keep us dry and warm so no complaints)!
