I think we have a political system that has similar traits as China (no freedom of press, no free protest, single-party control, etc). In a way we did not feel that our form of governance is bad and fear such controls. Other countries that are more democratic will see the Chinese system as scary. I guess that is why we can see China and America in a more neutral and balance point of view.

The west like us have no free press actually. Have you actually take a closer look at what is happening there in recent years? True that China does has its restrictions but actually it has better freedom in general. "China style democrazy" are even much preferred by a lot of westerns who lived in China for a while then realized that when returned to their countries.

Not the best reporting from Justin. First off, the pew poll covered only developed countries - within the poll, "asia pacific" included only American allies/aligned countries like Japan, Taiwan, Australia and New Zealand. If the poll included "global south" countries, Singapore would be far less of an outlier. As for the French report, I remember reading Justin's article on it. It came across as prejudiced, ignorant and arrogant. For starters, Justin did not seem aware that there is a great power competition going on between the US along with, to differing degrees, western states, and China. If he was aware he'd know neither sides' claims about the other should be taken at face value. Unfortunately, he lapped up the French report with little critical analysis. In fact I got the impression that he was suffering from confirmation bias - that he had chanced upon an obscure report confirming his views and was gleefully quoting the report as though it was gospel because it validated his views. (By the way Justin, I don't know where you got your education, but here's a tip: you can find papers that agree with just about any perspective if you look hard enough). Moreover, the entire article was predicated on the absurd belief that "Chinese influence" of any sort is malign. For example, Justin was critical of Confucius institutes while making no mention of the British council or Alliance francaise which spread British and French influence here. He was critical of dialect clans without mentioning Indian, Malay or European or American cultural groups. He clearly wasn't against spreading of influence in general, just Chinese influence, even in the most benign settings like charitable dialect groups - betraying his absurd belief that any Chinese influence at all is bad. His view that Chinese influence of any sort is bad came across as simplistic and arrogant: China has pulled hundred of millions out of poverty faster than any country has before and they've built the world's strongest manufacturing base. These are commonly known facts. Why does he so arrogantly believe there is nothing we can learn from them? Moreover they've created a massive middle class that is projected to grow into the worlds largest consumer market. Why does he feel justified in insinuating that Singaporeans, no small number of whom are economically dependent on China through jobs or trade, who try to understand China are morally deficient? We have practical concerns. Also, we can learn about China while not agreeing with everything, Justin's writing made no accommodation for this, effectively echoing the French report's implication that Singaporeans aren't intelligent enough to discern what's best for themselves. With all that about Justin's terrible reporting out of the way. Having read more of Justin's writing, he comes across as an ideologue. Here's a heads up for ideologues: The average Singaporean is not like you. Top on their list of concerns are practicalities like paying for their children's childcare, medical bills, housing costs etc - not ideologies. When they look at America, they see extreme health costs despite falling life expectancy, extreme educational costs, extreme housing costs, poor infrastructure, poor physical safety, endless wars of questionable legality, a dismal pandemic response, extreme political partisanship. They see a country that put a bleach drinker in control of the largest nuclear arsenal in the world and a dysfunctional political elite who serve corporations and spit on the weak. They don't see the same democratic utopia you do. Conversely, when they look at China, they see a government that proclaims "houses are for living" and that is willing to cool ("crash" in your terms) the housing market so houses are affordable. In China's pandemic response they see a government that values human lives over profit. In their growing middle class they see a country that *believes in social mobility*. When China imposes restrictions on large tech companies they see a country that is not going to allow corporate interests to overrun the country. They do not see an authoritarian dystopia like you do. Is the average Singaporean right to prioritize practicalities over ideologies? I'd say yes. Fundamentally, ideologies like democracy are amoral tools, they are not ends in and of themselves. Whether or not they result in humanistic, moral outcomes depends on the circumstances. Consider the contrast between Singapore and Malaysia. Objectively, Malaysia was more democratic from the get go. With a fairly liberal democracy, the country splintered politically along racial lines. Till this day, because of racial voting patterns, corrupt politicians stay in power. In Singapore, many would say LKY was something of a dictator, but he developed a national identity that transcends race and religion so that we could focus on improving the lives of all - today the average Singaporean is better off than the average Malaysian in a wide-range of metrics like lifespans, material comfort and more. The same goes in Afghanistan. The Americans, perhaps well-meaning, attempted to impose democracy on a country where the vast majority live in poverty, are illiterate and identify along tribal lines. The outcome? A corrupt, weak government that failed the Afghan people. Again, same goes in India, a country of untold potential that embraced liberal democracy well before it had the conditions for it. The outcome? 100s of millions in abject poverty - not very humanistic or moral. Ideologies are not magic pills that you can shove into every patient and get a good outcome. You need to consider the circumstances. As alluded to above, liberal democracy has prerequisites - people can't be desperately poor and easily swayed by empty promises. They must be educated enough to discern. They need a national identity that transcends race, religion and whatever other tribal identities. Ideologues like Justin, who are without care or concern for people and reality, try to force their ideologies on all, often to disastrous consequences. They are the scourge of humanity. People like him think China is cartoonishly evil just because she does not subscribe to their ideologies, completely disregarding her measurable accomplishments in improving her people's lives. Have they considered what the Chinese people's well-being would be like had they adopted liberal democracy from the get go? I doubt it. Anyway, point is, the average Singaporean is likely wise to not indulge in ideologies. If you have any doubts about my claims with regard to the average Singaporean, consider the following: when I still subscribed to the economist, I remember reading articles savagely critical of Singapore, similar in tone to the west's present day criticisms of China - "authoritarian", "repressive", etc etc. Despite all these criticisms, Singaporeans supported the PAP. To put it plainly, as a collective, the Singaporean people do not value western ideologies over practicalities and morals. Note how the percentage that support China over the US somewhat mirrors the percentage that vote for the PAP. Despite these decades of voting history, Justin is trying to ascribe partiality to China to things like race and brainwashing (Chinese influence). Perhaps Justin can enlighten us: why should Singaporeans trust America - who barely cares about her own - to care about Singaporeans? Putting aside all other factors, why does he expect Singaporeans to prefer America over China? ST, with his prejudiced writing and now video, Justin demeans the majority of Singaporeans - making it seem as though being partial to China is some moralistic flaw at worst and at best, some kind of intellectual deficit or ignorance. Why are you lot allowing him to tarnish your brand with his anti-Singaporean agenda? For the love of god, how is this 34 year old ignoramous your political correspondent? With his extreme prejudice, how is he going to produce anything of value in the current geopolitical situation? Do yourselves a favour hire reporters who are of sound mind.

Also, why not at least pretend to be objective? Say compare Chinese and western influence? We pick up American phones, open American made browsers, visit American moderated social media sites to read American perspectives aired by American media. Then we watch American shows and read American books about America. A whole lot of American influence, and it shows - I can rattle off a long list of western ideologies that have found their way into our national discourse: political correctness, wokeness, homosexuality, neoliberalism, islamaphobia, evangelicalism, feminism, sovereign citizenship, anti-vaccine, caustic public discourse, on and on, some good some bad. Where are the Chinese equivalents Justin? Can you even name any? And if you can, what are the measurable effects of these "horrible malign influences" compared to what we get from America and the west?

For a political correspondent, Justin appears pretty prejudiced. His sentiment, albeit disguised for the sake of this video, reflects what I see in many of my peers who are products of America's soft power. I confess I used to be one of them too. But history has shown us all we need to see about how the West regards those who hold different ideologies from them and those who pose a threat to their global power. And to add to what you said regarding pragmatism over ideology, of course no society is perfect - every ideology has its loophole or failing, and we can all stand to learn from one another. For instance, pragmatically speaking, I'm willing to give up certain liberties (like the right to bear arms or abuse drugs) if that means helping to maintain social order, which in turn facilitates economic advancement in the country. In the grand scheme of things, I feel that what makes one society more liveable than another is how happy, prosperous and safe its people are, not how much freedom each person has at the expense of others and the community at large.

Btw aren’t we also influenced by western media (most of whom American)? As diverse and as free as they may seem; be it CNN or Fox has a central theme in creating the American agenda from both sides of their political divide. Media influence is a soft, slow, repetitive activity. It depends on what you read. The best way to curb political influences be it from the Americans/ 5 eyes or China; is to read widely think openly and consider why they tell what they had told you. What is their motive. Always fact check and counter check. Easier if you know both languages. Btw, with a rising China, Singaporeans of all ethnicities ought to learn Chinese/ Mandarin. Treat it as how you or your parents had learnt English. It’s for our future economic relevance. It’s a question of when not what will… Back to propaganda, if it is social medias by all means test your suspicion by debates; not name calling but calling out what you feel is prejudiced or incorrect. While this clip focuses on China; do hope that ST can also show where we are or can be influenced by the 5 eyes …. while it is always easy to like a comedian and even stay on the “right” side because of what the Western media says…. Is our position on Ukraine-Russia-Nato; really water tight? Something to ponder and test your critical thought. Of course our MFA position is right from our national interests. While ST can be boring at times, it is the media Singaporeans rely on the most fair and real information. The gold standard. Please keep it up.

I put it to you the followings: 1. Is there any Justification/s to launch an invasion against another independent nation which happen to be a fellow member of United Nation like you, unprovoked after having already annexed part of that country's territory of Crimea some 9 years Back. These actions are illegal according to UN Charter that calls for independence, sovereignty and Territorial integrity of all nations to be intact and protected. 2. Recognising the independence of seperatist states of a fellow member. nations also can never be accepted. 3. Targeting civilians , including Residential apartment blocks, Hospitals, Schools, theaters and nuclear power plants is unjustifiable. So, Should the World stopped Putin's Russia? Should Your country, being a part of the World and a member of United Nations play your part and uphold the UN Charter?

There is a stark difference between China propaganda and Western media. China's propaganda is government / state driven. The message is singular in nature with only 1 perspective from the government with the ultimate objective of promoting China and creating Anti-West narratives. Western media is not directly controlled by governments and does not exist for the singular purpose of promoting the West. Western media often carries multiple viewpoints so it is not even appropriate to use the word propaganda when it comes to Western media. Moreover, it is often easier to get to the truth when it comes to Western media.

We are neither citizens of the US nor China. When it comes to politics, Singapore will always come first. But as individuals, if we are of Chinese decent, our vision shouldn’t be limited to where we are now but how and why we have came here. Also when we stepped out of Singapore; other than our passport or how we speak; our identity is a Chinese to anyone who sees us before knowing us. But we do not represent China, we represent ourselves. While politicians in the west wants to pigeonhole us or Xi-CPC wants to pull us to their agenda and loyalties based on race; we ought to reject them. However we shouldn’t reject our identity as Chinese just because of these fears. We should all the more learn Chinese and be good with understanding the history of how we came here, the culture, the language and elements needed to stop any of the adventures the CPC tries and yet make the Americans respect our heritage without associating it with China per se. There is no need to be like Taiwan to denounce Chineseness to be Taiwanese or Singaporeans. Our best identity demarcation is to be well versed with both cultures and comfortable whenever in each cultural sphere. Maybe Gu Ailin, the olympian is someone we should learn to be, but a Singaporean one!

@@niu745 An article in 2013 -Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew Talks America's Strengths And Weaknesses Both in the United States and abroad, many influential observers argue that the U.S. is in systemic decline. Not so, says Lee Kuan Yew, the sage of Singapore. Lee is not only a student of the rise and fall of nations. He is also the founder of modern Singapore. As prime minister from 1959 to 1990, he led its rise from a poor, small, corrupt port to a first-world city-state in just one generation. Today, Singapore’s six million citizens have incomes higher than those of Americans. He has served as a mentor to every leader of China since Deng Xiaoping initiated China’s march to the market, and every American president since Richard Nixon has sought his counsel about the U.S. role in Asia. In the pages of Forbes and elsewhere, he has consistently emphasized America’s resilience. Here is how he summarized that judgment to us when we interviewed him in May 2011: America will not be reduced to second-rate status. Historically, the U.S. has demonstrated a great capacity for renewal and revival. America’s strengths include an ability to range widely, imaginatively, and pragmatically; a diversity of centers of excellence that compete in inventing and embracing new ideas and new technologies; a society that attracts talent from around the world and assimilates them comfortably as Americans; and a language that the lingua franca of those who rise to the top of their own societies around the world.

@@smilewitheddy I miss LKY , I wish he’s still with us. I do not disagree with what LKY had said about the US. But what LKY meant was mostly about the American military mights and her technologies. At the same time LKY was also constantly saying that China will soon catch up with the US if China has the chance to rise peacefully. For China to rise peacefully means she mustn’t engage in any wars that could hamper her progress. And given the sheer size of her population, that itself is a power as in buying and spending power, manpower. And given the fact that Chinese are basically hard working people, her vast population will help to propel the speed of her progress even faster. LKY gave China a time frame of at least 50 years or more to become a superpower. But China has far exceeded LKY’s expectations, by now China has managed to rise above the US in not just in economy, technologies, space explorations, but could match the American military might in every manner possible. Pentagon has let known that China has developed a hypersonic missile that could strike at 2 destinations with just a single launch, a new technology that US has yet to develop. China is always silent about her achievements, if pentagon didn’t accuse China of having it, the world wouldn’t know that China has it. There’s no known shield that could block a missile that could strike at 2 destinations simultaneously, a technology that only China has now. As for technologies, the whole of China is already going cashless, all payments done electronically. US is still using cards and cash. China is already using 5G, 6G is coming soon. Majority knows nothing about 5G in the US. Ouch. As for living standards, China is at least 20 years ahead of US. China has lifted 800 millions out of poverty since the 80s. Majority of Chinese now is enjoying a middle class lifestyle. Whereas there are more than 40 millions living below poverty line in the US today. For business, easier to deal with chinese then americans. No upset in T&C and such. Maybe just me. Chinese or Singaporean is a wierd question in the interview. It is like asking anyone in Singapore the same question, malay or singaporean? Indian or Singaporean? Singapore is a multi ethnic nation. If you are proud of your nation and look highly at your culture to the point willing to defend it. You are a Singaporean.

I enjoyed watching this video clip. It’s good to know that they still stand independently for Singapore. They are all educated well. But what about the silent majority ? My critic of China is not holistically. I’m a non Chinese that understand Mandarin. My beautiful wife whom I’ve been married to for 39 years is Chinese. It’s more about the present CCP under Xi. I have a great admiration for premier Teng Xiow Ping. It is he who got China out of poverty. It is he who took China to where it is today. Sure there’s propaganda all over the world. But if you’re able to see all sides and not take sides, the truth is out there. It maybe painful. Staying unbiased is crucial. Keep up the good work.

The three interviewers in this video are very temperate in their views. Of course having a camera pointed at your face when asked, "are you pro-China?" it is understandable that you would want to qualify that you are "pro-China", but "Singaporean, first and always". That is just prudent self-preservation. Or self-selection (did CloseUp contact other Sinophile - or Pro-China - Singaporeans? Did the most vocal and passionate decline to appear on video? Did these three agree because they understood their motivations, their vulnerability (to foreign influence), and had a rational and reasonable explanation for their pro-China position?) Three reasonable and moderate Pro-China advocates do not represent the entire spectrum of Sinophiles. Or Sinofanatics. Just look at the comments on social media for any China or US related stories. Pro-Chinese position are almost invariably paired with Anti-US sentiments. And pro-China frequently include pro-Chinese policies and position like deriding Ukraine's resistance against Russia (and Ukraine's president - always a give away when they resort to ad hominem attacks). I fear this video attempts to give a reasonable face to Sinophile Singaporeans, and in a sense is trying to influence Singaporeans. Or rehabilitate the image of the Pro-China Singaporean. I wonder why. After all 64% of Singaporeans already see China in a positive light.

As a Singaporean, I support our country neutrality. We are neither pro-China nor pro-USA. We are pro-values. We see merits in each issue. When US invaded under the pretext of WMD, we condemn their action. When people starved during the Cultural Revolution, we condemn their action. We only support Singapore but we want to be friends with both China and USA.

Seems like we are fast tracking to a cross-road of taking sides rather then take precedence over something important, have we lost our identity or losing grip in most of the sociopolitical spectrum? This video ends and conclude quite abruptly. Does malleable means it is easy to be influence? It could also meant adaptable. So, what does the journalist trying to infer?

I think there's a myriad of factors that make Singaporeans more welcoming to China. Culture, business ties, governance etc. We're a pragmatic society and always need to rely on foreign business relations. That said however, I'm just concerned that we do not become a "red state" since our governance already has authoritarian traits.
