They don't, but much of the world is built to fit humans. Door sizes, tools, vehicles, lawnmowers, shelves, etc. Initially the robots will be replacing humans and being trained by humans. Why make them twice, or half, the size of the humans. But sure, we have small vacuum robots and large factory robots too.

You really don't in a lot of cases but our environment was built for us. If you want a versatile robot that interacts with our environment, it is usually easier to have a humanoid type configuration that can navigate hallways, stairs, doorways, they are easy for us to see (not looking down all the time), they can grab tools off of shelves etc.

I am an automation engineer and unless they came up with an inclredible programming AI algrithm that can take care of all the nuances of the assembly process (which I find very unlikely) those humanoid robots are shown to fool investors. BTW, robots have been used in production lines for decades, they have many applications but by no means they are a one-size-fits-all automation tool.

Judging by my limited experinence with Chat GPT, I would not be worried for at least a decade. When you ask questions that are not that easy to answer just makes up BS. This is not possible when you program robots, the program has to be 100% correct. After more than 30 years of robots in manufacturing ( with all the improvements made over the decades) the main constraint implementing robots in a production line is that when you refined the program to acceptable levels, the production line is already changing because the product has design changes or other reasons. It would be ideal to automate a product that does not change over the years but that is not possible for car manufacturers. Elon Musk and some of my employers wanted to put robots everywhere ( hubris since they have no experience or listen to experienced people) and had to back down because they were counterproductive in many cases, sometimes a good fixture to perform a manual operations makes much more sense. I don't doubt that eventually robots will be able to do what humans do at competitive price, I doubt that is going to happen in the near future though. @@larryc1616

Yes, the robots shown in this video are slow. But, it's only a matter of time before they will be more efficient than humans. Proof this is that all automation to date is a mechanical solution to replace an inefficient human task. As long as not too many humans are displaced to fast, this is a net win. But, if humans demand wages and benefits far beyond the value they bring to a company, you can be sure more automation will be quick to follow.

Ev sales are down significantly in Europe so far this year and that might change but so far in 2024 there's a voracious appetite for Hev & Phev's and that doesn't include mild hybrids and small turbo charged petrol engines. Human workers are very good at adapting to changes in the environment. If corroded parts are introduced, they will notice right away. Humans are also very good at continuous improvement. Authority goes with knowledge and ability. Robots are programmed by specialist engineers and will say (just like cigar chomping foreman) "if it ain't broke, don't fix it Leave it the heck alone. It's been working just fine". Improvements will be rare. Lexus started out with highly automated factories, and they gave it up. The Tesla Model 3 started out with automated factories and human workers saved the car. Automation has its place. It will increase as technology improves. Humanoid robots are overkill. Monkey eyes, ears, arms and fingers can do pretty much everything necessary given the right software.

BYD maybe shouting about robots but that video was done at NIO's factory. I agree, looked liked the .005 version of the TeslaBot. I don't think humanoid BOTs will be used on the assembly line to install parts right away but definitely for inspection, alignment, filling part bins and non production time cleanup & maintenance.

Robotic arms and such have been used in manufacturing for decades. Unions kept their roles at bay but now that another country, this time China, don’t have those restrictions, it was only an amount of time before these technological advances were implemented. A century ago, human beings who did math were called computers. Yes, your job title was “computer”. Who even thinks about computers as anything other than a machine now? One sector of the labor force will be displaced and something else will happen. Physical labor will eventually become obsolete. We live in the Age of Information now; it’s becoming increasingly the currency people create. This video is an example of the new economy.

I think those that are mocking these robots are missing the point. Curent bots are extremely limited, but over the next 10 years these bots will become far more capable and will take the job market by storm. There are already robots, but they are programmed by people and purpose built. These robots can learn new tasks and are adaptable to new tasks. The same bot that picks apples can also work on an assembly line or load dishes/clean (similar to what a person can do)

If your factory is fully automated, that's nice and you're safe from disruption due to health issues. Until your supply chain collapses because your suppliers are much smaller and aren't automated to that extent, and the transport and logistics aren't either... Without raw resources and components no product.

The only way legacy automakers will employ robots on their production lines is if those robots belong to the UAW union, either through full ownership by the union or by membership - can you imagine the union negotiations related to work conditions for robots, and yes, of course the UAW union will get into that gig, they are, after all, there to screw money out of the legacy automakers (ably assisted by the Democrat party manipulating legislation to benefit the UAW union) and nothing more - and you thought they were there to represent the workers, a bunch of whom they managed to put out of work with the last round of wage increases... But seriously, robots will inevitably replace humans on production lines and in repetitive work environments, that is just the nature of technology.

Robotics is the easy challenge (in comparison to event else) in the race to have functional humanoids. The challenging parts are the individual software/ hardware packages that run everything AKA the brain, as well as discovering a safe energy solution to power mobile versions of them. This is a nonsense. Most car manufacturing is already done with robots - rote operations like stamping, welding etc. The remainder isn't done by humans because they're human shaped but because the tasks themselves are complex, not rote operations. Things like finally assembly, fit and finish where things get more imprecise, fiddly and more subjective.
