South Korea's population has started decreasing too this year, but the fertility rate is way worse (1.3 vs 0.8). It doesn't has the male-heavy problem that china has, but the population decline will be more sharp and severe.

Yea, many people don’t know Hong Kong was only a cluster of fishing villages when the British first arrived. Then the population exploded, adding about a million every decade through both births and immigration, going from a million after the Japanese surrender, to 7.5 million at the peak. The births had dropped very low after the 90’s but the immigration didn’t stop, allowing 120 one-way permits every day.

3:19 I love how he asks about 6 paragraphs response 😂🤣 Anyways here's my 6 paragraph response : On December 31, 2019, China announced the discovery of a cluster of pneumonia cases in Wuhan. The first American case was reported on January 20, and President Donald Trump declared the U.S. outbreak a public health emergency on January 31. Restrictions were placed on flights arriving from China,[17][18] but the initial U.S. response to the pandemic was otherwise slow, in terms of preparing the healthcare system, stopping other travel, and testing.[19][20][21][a][23] The first known American deaths occurred in February. On March 6, 2020, Trump allocated $8.3 billion to fight the outbreak and declared a national emergency on March 13. The government also purchased large quantities of medical equipment, invoking the Defense Production Act of 1950 to assist.[24] By mid-April, disaster declarations were made by all states and territories as they all had increasing cases. A second wave of infections began in June, following relaxed restrictions in several states, leading to daily cases surpassing 60,000. By mid-October, a third surge of cases began; there were over 200,000 new daily cases during parts of December 2020 and January 2021.[25][26] COVID-19 vaccines became available in December 2020, under emergency use, beginning the national vaccination program, with the first vaccine officially approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on August 23, 2021.[27] Studies have shown them to be highly protective against severe illness, hospitalization, and death. In comparison with fully vaccinated people, the CDC found that those who were unvaccinated were from 5 to nearly 30 times more likely to become either infected or hospitalized. There has nonetheless been some vaccine hesitancy for various reasons, although side effects are rare.[28][29][30] There have also been numerous reports that unvaccinated COVID-19 patients have strained the capacity of hospitals throughout the country, forcing many to turn away patients with life-threatening diseases. A fourth rise in infections began in March 2021 amidst the rise of the Alpha variant, a more easily transmissible variant first detected in the United Kingdom. That was followed by a rise of the Delta variant, an even more infectious mutation first detected in India, leading to increased efforts to ensure safety. The January 2022 emergence of the Omicron variant, which was first discovered in South Africa, has led to record highs in hospitalizations and cases, with as many as 1.5 million new infections reported in a single day.[31] State and local responses to the pandemic have included the requirement to wear a face mask in specified situations (mask mandates), prohibition and cancellation of large-scale gatherings (including festivals and sporting events), stay-at-home orders, and school closures.[32] Disproportionate numbers of cases have been observed among Black and Latino populations,[33][34][35] as well as elevated levels of vaccine hesitancy,[36][37] and there has been a sharp increase in reported incidents of xenophobia and racism against Asian Americans.[38][39] Clusters of infections and deaths have occurred in many areas.[b] The COVID-19 pandemic has also led to misinformation and conspiracy theories[42] and has highlighted weaknesses in the U.S. public health system Most people infected with the virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. However, some will become seriously ill and require medical attention. Older people and those with underlying medical conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, or cancer are more likely to develop serious illness. Anyone can get sick with COVID-19 and become seriously ill or die at any age. The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is to be well informed about the disease and how the virus spreads. Protect yourself and others from infection by staying at least 1 metre apart from others, wearing a properly fitted mask, and washing your hands or using an alcohol-based rub frequently. Get vaccinated when it’s your turn and follow local guidance. The virus can spread from an infected person’s mouth or nose in small liquid particles when they cough, sneeze, speak, sing or breathe. These particles range from larger respiratory droplets to smaller aerosols. It is important to practice respiratory etiquette, for example by coughing into a flexed elbow, and to stay home and self-isolate until you recover if you feel unwell.

The immigration thing is actually stranger than the statistics shows. AFAIK you can't normally become a Chinese citizen unless you can prove direct descent from people who have held Chinese citizenships. So it's likely that almost 100% of the million or so Americans immigrating to China are at least partly ethnically Chinese. Also, obviously the statistics don't show Taiwan because China considers people moving to and from Taiwan to be domestic movement.

3:19 - The United States is currently facing an alarming trend in its life expectancy. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, life expectancy in the US decreased by one-tenth of a year from 2017 to 2018. This is the third year in a row that life expectancy in the US has dropped, and the first time since the 1960s that life expectancy has decreased for three consecutive years. There are a variety of factors contributing to this troubling trend, including rising rates of drug overdose deaths, suicide, heart disease, and obesity. One of the major contributors to the declining life expectancy in the US is drug overdose deaths. The rate of drug overdose deaths in the US has more than doubled in the last decade, with a record high of 70,237 overdose deaths in 2017. This is due in part to the opioid epidemic that has swept across the nation in recent years, leading to the widespread availability of highly addictive and dangerous drugs. In addition, the increase in synthetic opioids such as fentanyl has made the situation even more dire. Another key factor in the declining life expectancy in the US is suicide. Suicide rates in the US have been steadily increasing for the past two decades, reaching a record high of 47,173 suicides in 2017. This increase to be driven in part by mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety, as well as the availability of firearms and other weapons. The rising rates of heart disease in the US is another critical factor in the declining life expectancy. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US, accounting for about one in four deaths. The prevalence of heart disease is due to a variety of factors, including poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, and high levels of stress. Finally, the increasing rate of obesity in the US is also having a significant impact on life expectancy. The rate of obesity has more than tripled since the 1960s, and currently affects over 40% of adults in the US. This is due in part to the widespread availability of unhealthy and processed foods, as well as a lack of physical activity. In conclusion, the declining life expectancy in the US is due to a variety of factors, including drug overdose deaths, suicide, heart disease, and obesity. It is essential that the US takes steps to address these issues, in order to reverse this troubling trend. This could include providing more resources for mental health services and addiction treatment, promoting healthier diets, and encouraging more physical activity. It is only through collective efforts that the US can succeed in preserving and improving the life expectancy of its citizens.

@@Schizz76 The issue isn't mainly driven by the pure numerical difference. It's more so the fact that 20-50 year old men want to marry 20-30 year old women. And it's fairly likely the older men will actually win because they have more money, leaving like 20 million 20-30 year old men who can't find a wife. I honestly think that if China goes to war in the next twenty years this will be the root cause. Excess dispossessed young men are a massive expansionary force.

3:16 Here you go! In the past six years, there have been several factors that have contributed to a decrease in life expectancy. One major factor has been the ongoing opioid epidemic in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), opioid overdose deaths have increased by more than 400% since 1999, and in 2017 alone, more than 47,000 people died from opioid overdoses. This has had a significant impact on life expectancy, particularly in communities most affected by the epidemic. Another factor that has contributed to a decrease in life expectancy is the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has resulted in widespread illness and death, with more than 22 million confirmed cases and over 382,000 deaths in the United States alone as of January 2021. The pandemic has also had a significant impact on mental health, with increased rates of depression and anxiety reported among both those who have contracted the virus and those who have not. A third factor that has contributed to a decrease in life expectancy is the rise in non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. According to the World Health Organization, NCDs are responsible for 70% of deaths worldwide and are on the rise in many low- and middle-income countries. Climate change also plays a role in decreasing life expectancy. Extreme weather events and natural disasters have caused displacement, injury, and death. Furthermore, air pollution, which is linked to climate change, is a major risk factor for heart and lung diseases, which are leading causes of death worldwide. Economic inequality also plays a role in decreasing life expectancy. According to a study by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, life expectancy is lower for people living in areas with higher levels of income inequality. This is likely due to a lack of access to healthcare, healthy food, and safe housing in these areas. Finally, poor access to healthcare can also decrease life expectancy. In many low-income countries, people do not have access to the medical care and treatments they need to manage chronic diseases and prevent premature death. Additionally, in many high-income countries, access to healthcare is limited for certain populations, such as people living in rural areas or those with low incomes.

Maybe we should have like 4 day work week or equally short 5 days and no hard stop at the retirement. We have that hard stop at 70. When you turn 70 your employment is automatically terminated. Though some will work after that too. But maybe we should look at more how you could keep yourself healthy enough to continue working.. maybe with even less hours. Now that I am at my working age I think back at my interrail trip I did back when I was a teenager. That's not happening for a long time. Maybe after retirement? And that is a shame. I am still young and healthy. It would be nice that I could have a bit of time off from work just to see the world or something. Like a month or two. Now I need to wait until I am in my sixties. There should be an option to take some time off if you wanted to without resigning. If you have been working "non-stop" for 30-40 years.. damn right you are going to retire. But if you had the change to have time off every now and then.. What keeps you from continuing to work and enjoying life?

this is a disaster because of just how much the world economy is dependant on that cheap chinese labor, cut that in half and this will cause a global economic crisis. it may be possible to partically replace it with other east asian countries, india, or african nations, but it doesnt seem like they are ready for it no to mention the fact that we only have roughly 70 years to do it. there is also a concern about what CCP may do facing this existential crisis, they may end-up collapsing under the pressure from all sides which may result in nation-wide chaos and re-activation of separatist movements. things are nowhere near as light as toycat is suggesting, it is borderline mis-information. this crisis should not be taken lightly.

America has such a high standard of living due to actually having the resources to accommodate its population, and the only way other nations will be able to achieve the same thing is by depopulating. Plus, automation will easily pick up the slack, worker productivity is still on the rise.

If they manage the population decline gracefully it could be a really good thing for the country. 1.4B is too many. China is only marginally capable of feeding itself using super intensive agricultural techniques that are not sustainable in the long run. Around 800-900M, the country becomes fairly self sufficient. A shrinking population also makes it possible to ease the pressure on the housing market and natural resources. It means per capita energy consumption can continue to rise without requiring catastrophic levels of new coal plants. The natural environment might be allowed to recover. The young people being born now can have a lot less stressful lives since there's so much less competition for good univerities and good jobs, and they'll ultimately inherit the wealth of their parents and grandparents. And in aggregate, these factors, especially relieving housing and academic competition, will ultimately help recover the birth rates as having kids becomes financially viable for more and more families.

Pension is just a bad idea in general. There's no reason the Government should be taking a big chunk of your money during your youth to "safeguard" until your retirement. The government is spending a trillion dollars a year that they don't have. Everyone should just get all their money and use it for what they want. If you don't save enough to retire then it's your own damn fault.

That’s how they’ve become such a power, and I don’t see that trend of advancement waning. Sure, their workforce is going down, but workforce doesn’t matter when you can just automate jobs and support people as though they were retired anyways.

@StuffandThings_
@StuffandThings_ Жыл бұрын
@@effexon Yeah, its also important to keep in mind that the US has vast quantities of some of the richest farmland on the planet in the Mississippi basin, and valuable trading ports along the coasts to boost GDP. Its practically the ideal country economically, with lots of resources and opportunities for wealth generation spread amongst relatively few people. US is already facing issues with people flocking to cities in the desert southwest which should have never existed in the first place (all the low reservoir levels that keep making the news), but that's quite a localized issue and the US as a whole can still handle its population quite well. But it just goes to show that even the US is not invulnerable to such pressures. Western Europe still has pretty good economics, but much of this is due to old business empires from the colonial days which still exploit the third world to inflate what that continent is capable of. Heavy use of fertilizers, an unusually large amount of temperate land to farm, and advanced economies that produce high tech goods and services also helps, though climate change is beginning to take its toll on the former. Its also worth mentioning that Europe has essentially no intact nature left (pretty much the last minute tracts are along the Carpathians, preserved by the communist regimes, and the useless swamps around the borders of Poland, Belarus, and Ukraine). Now, thankfully the glacial maximums wiped out most of Europe's unique nature long before humans started wrecking the place, so there wasn't a whole lot to lose, but this is not the case in the rest of the world, and Asia has already lost vast tracts of unique ecosystems due to overpopulation. Point is, Europe was already in a rather unique position to handle its immense population as well as it has without huge consequences, so for the rest of the world the situation is likely to be even worse.

The main problem is not with total population decline (though that also will affect the potential economic productivity and consumption, and thus will have an effect on the global scale too), but with the declining proportion of working people to the elderly - meaning that pension, medical care, and other social support systems will begin to implode if another solution is not found to keep them functioning. For example, advanced AI and robotics can help to support the declining labor force, and Japan, with similar problems, is already blazing the trail in that direction.

Because a bunch of rich people won't be able to get quite as rich, its easier to exploit larger populations. The end of feudalism in Europe was brought on by the depopulation from the Black Plague, where peasants were actually able to demand more for their labor. The modern ultra rich are concerned about the same thing, and for them its quite easy to literally buy public opinion through various means. Sad to see how easily people will latch on to it, though. The future will already have a devastated environment due to our overpopulation, the world simply does not have the resources for this many people.

That's only true if all countries decline by roughly the same amount at the same time, if China's population rapidly declines while other countries are still on the rise, that eventually just means China will become more economically and politically irrelevant globally, compared to other countries.
