China's supply chain dominance means the Inflation Reduction Act is already dead.

A key feature of Biden's Inflation Reduction Act is the re-shoring of critical tech for clean energy, especially in battery technologies for electric vehicles. But China has near-monopolies on the refining and processing of all the battery components, as well as huge production cost advantages. According to analysis by the International Energy Agency, even after the projects announced under the Inflation Reduction Act come fully online under the most optimistic scenarios, China will still have two thirds of the world's production of new energy batteries, at less than half the cost.

I'm guessing the west who helped China industrialize, for their own monetary benefit, never guessed it would come to pass that China would become a peer (or near peer) in every aspect. America shut China out of the Int'l Space Stat'n, now China has their own space program and plans to colonize the moon! America shut out China on military hardware, now China has cutting edge hypersonic missiles, along with anti-access plus area deiial weaponry and the outer space satellite comm array to guide those variable glide path warheads. China went from a brown water naval light patrol force to a large blue water navy to prevent an invader from sailing in, parking an aircraft carrier or two out of shore launch range of typical antiship missiles and then have the former freedom to fly sorties with no resistance. Yeah, I think all countries in and that originated from Northern Europe, they had such dominace over eveyone else, especially in the earlier centuries where Westerners captured, and enslaved humans in a manner no different than say like catching a common animal and making them slaves, endentured servants and similar, to how things are now. I bet those Westerners think how in the hell did those backward and backwoods yellow people from a few centuries ago turn into an equal, or at the very least, a near peer. It just goes to show, Westerners are not the only smart ones in the neighborhood we call the globe. Still though, America still pedals that old racist Yellow Scare propaganda after the Union Pacific Railroad brought over 20,000 plus men from the Canton region (now Guangzhou) to buld the Transcontinental Railroad's western rail spur to Promontory Point. After that, the Chinese labor force went from cheap labor to be exploited to then be demknkzed by the Yellow Scare B.S. to whites passing the Chinese Exclusion Act. I don't see why many people were up in indignation and the holier-than-art thou feelings of indignation when Trump passed the Anti-Muslim ban. Hell, the elite whites outlawed Chinese immigrants lock stock and barrel for almost in the 1870s. It wasn't until WW2 where the Japs bombed Pearl Harbor and the Pacific Theater of War started that the attitude tide of unfavorable status to favorable status came about. And even then, it wasn't until the Kennedy Administration came about that Chinese were allowed to immjgrate freely like the rest of say western Europe. In America, I have the sinking suspicion the elite whites think how is it that those "coolies" over there don't do as we say, and how dare they muscle in on the elite white hegemony, which js the order of things. As the saying goes, the more things change, the more they stay the same. It's good that mankind now is forced to not subordinate others on our small planet.

The root problem in the USA is bad infrastructure. Without affordable housing, school & medical, electricity, water, transportation & communication... the labour cost will be high. As simple as that
@cls-py8uh
@cls-py8uh 28 күн бұрын
It may not actually be as simple as that. In reality, if one were to take the PRC out of the picture, then the United States is actually doing quite well, very well, in a much greater diversity of industries and STEM subfields. However, with the PRC in the picture, significant swathes of traditional U.S. domination were almost annihilated in a matter of less than 2 decades (compare to the timeline of centuries). As a result, it is incredible to witness how the United States, previously a super power, would decay so rapidly relative to many others historically (for instance, contrast the U.S.'s duration as a super power versus that of, say, the Western Roman Empire, the Eastern Roman Empire, the Ottoman Empire, or even, the Ming Dynasty). It is the return of China as represented by the PRC that had completely displaced the United States. This is potentially a terrifying suggestion to some, since what is implied is that, even the United States at its best will not be able to prevent the return of the Chinese civilization.

Greenspan called it chained inflation. If consumers switch from steak dinners to chicken, then they want chicken more than steak. The consumer in effect has not gone backwards due to higher cost of steak, they just like chicken. If consumers choose to eat dog food from 50 pound bags instead of steak and sushi, then it’s not inflation (dog food has increased in value to surpass the value of steak).

I appreciate your brutal candor in laying out the harsh realities of our current predicament. I am not a politician by history or temperament, but am increasingly seeing that as tawdry as that calling is, it is what is necessary to save the Nation that I love and cherish. Politics as usual is sending us to the ash heap of history. Keep criticizing America, keep showing us the irrefutable numbers of our decline, keep showing us the terrible fruits of our folly. We know much of this; you add to our knowledge with specifics vis-a-vis China. If American renewal is to come, it can only come from a small, fearless “band of brothers” willing to face reality-willing to do the work. We do not see your analyses as the harbinger or foreshadowing of our defeat, rather as our more precisely defined, more accurately focused, more existentially urgent To Do List. @michaellorton8099
@michaellorton8099 28 күн бұрын
Bullying?? I try to be respectful of people who comment in good faith. I agree with ajhdigital that on an interpersonal or small group level, cooperation and mutual advantage are the favored options. If someone in your small social circle betrays you, only you and your family suffer the relatively minor injuries of your misplaced trust. But I would respectfully submit that Great Powers can never play by the rules that govern church picnics and bridge clubs. Great Powers must try to cooperate and trade on a superficial level, but must never be deceived into thinking detente (friendly, open communication) means that each is not, behind the scenes, seeking decisive economic, military, technological, and/or geopolitical advantage. Every Great Power-unless led by fools-is trying to balance and contain every other Great Power. Misguided trust and cooperation at that level can lead to cruel servitude or even death on a massive scale for regular people who trusted you as their leader to protect them in a vicious, duplicitous world. When I was at University, I took a classics course in which we read Thucydides’ “The Peloponnesian War”. I will never forget the Melian Dialogue in which the people of Melos protested that it was unjust and unfair for the Athenians to unilaterally impose such harsh demands when the people of Melos had been neutral and never harmed the Athenians. The words of the much more powerful Athenian General ring clear to me even now: “Talk of justice enters in only where the press of necessity is equal. Otherwise the strong will take what they will and the weak will yield what they must.” This is the reality of human beings. I did not make the rules. But woe be to him who forgets those rules even if not of his making.

USA is a capitalistic country and is supposed to be the strongest industrial country in the world and yet only now suddenly find that the US is short of practically everything that is required to make solar panel and batteries for EV. How come such scenario happens? Similarly the US suddenly found itself short of many drugs during the Covid-19 period as China stop producing the drugs for the US market during Covid-19.. How come such event happens? The US also found suddenly there were shortages of shipping containers during the Covid-19 period to ship goods from US ports to other countries. Again to the US horror, all the shipping containers are made in China.The US ports want to install a container crane capable of lifting the heaviest container is only available and made by a Chinese firm ZPMC. The US suddenly fearful of cybersecurity threat forbids further import of ZPMC crane. Fearful of losing the war in Ukraine, the US asks China for help not to offer aid to Russia. The US asks China for help to persuade Iran not to retaliate against Israel attack on Iranian embassy in Syria. Janet Yellen went to China asking for help to buy more treasury bonds recently. What is really happening in the US government losing power to China voluntarily ? The US wants to de-couple from China but also ask China for help. It is a very strange behaviour.

There are other huge disadvantages hindering successful long term business in the US. For example, look at how the government pursued electric vehicles in China versus the US. In China, the government worked with companies that were in a position to succeed and rigged the economics to make them succeed. In the US, the government ignored the company in the best position to succeed (Tesla), and favored the companies they wanted to succeed for political purposes (Ford & GM). The government went so far as to pretend Tesla did not exist and gave GM & F all the credit for EVs in America. In return for behind the scenes favoritism, they pushed out EVs that were unpopular costly failures. In the US, CEOs like GM’s Mary Barra get hundreds of times more pay than the workers but will not get her hands dirty, whereas the CEO of the company that succeeded was so committed, he actually slept in the factory to get it right. Instead of consistently supporting Tesla, the government turned a blind eye to massive short selling that was an attempt to break Tesla. In the US, the government pretends to support manufacturing success but in reality, they actively impede success in order to favor their insiders.

The information isn't new. The charts may have been updated slightly but the trend is always there. Currently a VW IDS.4 made in Europe is about 2 to 2.5 times the same model manufactured in China whereas it is even more expensive in the US. The US politicians always pride themselves with the slogan to re-shore the industies back to the US but they never say anything about the cost at the end. On the solar panel it was WSJ who reported US doesn't even have some parts of the supply chain needed for the solar panel production. The Wood Mackenzie 2023 has reported US solar panel is 2.66 times of the Chinese. The IEA also confirmed in 2023 the world's 90% solar power market is supplied by 5 countries with China leading with 80%. What IEA didn't know is that China is also the key supplier of raw materials and parts for the other four. It was IEA who said US and EU each accounts for about 1% of the solar panel market! 2023 is also the year China took 12 months to install 217 GW solar power. THis is more than any country's national total capacity. The next runner-up US has at the end of 2023 a maximum of 170GW. Althouigh US pioneered the use of solar power it was China who innovated and brought the cost down by more than 95%. China has been the leader consecutively for 10 years since 2014. On the wind power it is US's own goal. Nearly every wind power project has been ground to a halt by the high interest rate in the US. If this isn't bad enough the existing grid transmission system does not have spare capacity to carry the new solar parks or wind farms already built or being planned. The Grid companies want the developers or the government to pay for the grid upgrade and see little incentive to heavily invest the system because that problem was brought on by others. The devlopers and government see no reason to invest as neither will own the new upgrade. US has every opportunity to become the leader of EV because every American car company has factories in China making cars when most of the Chinese were going everywhere on pushbikes. They could have invested in Chinese EV, solar and battery to become the key player but few did that because the US's interest has always been controlled by big oil companies. China doesnn't have vast oil reserves like the US so its leadership saw renewable energy as China's future. Thus the industries have been developed to what they are today. In a way the Inflation Reduction Act is just a vote pulling grimmack because the US has no long term plan for where it wants to go. Therefore the US could have Trump pulling out from COP28 and then Biden rejoined later. Just like the current Ukraine war pushed hard by Biden but TRump declares that he would put a stop to it within 24 hours taking office.

Don't need any more solar panels and until a truly affordable large battery system is develeoped, no point in even installing them. Even China doesn't currently have a superior storage method for electricity created from solar. As far as electric cars go, why even discuss it? The power grid won't support another 30 percent electric vehicles in the US anyway. Lastly, in regards to hydrogen production, this is an ongoing battle for who will invent the superior methodology for its creation. China does not currently have the only or even the superior method for doing such and the rest of the world is currently working on this problem as we speak. The one thing China has really going on is the copper and silicon industry..........CHIPS , etc. That alone is worrisome. For now, we need a bigger power grid, a real one, not some bullshit that works 8 hours a day. CAlifornia has reported that they already produce more power from solar than they can possibly use during the peak hours and they still have no way to store it. I say we take some of the fiat currency we're sending to shitholes like Israel and Ukraine and start investing it elsewhere. Of course, if we did that, Joe Biden wouldn't get his 10 percent cut.

The west had it industrial revolution morethan a couple of centuries and dominated in every sections of the markets. Unfortunately they had lost the nags of investments in certain sections especially in the developing countries because they are too risky and returns are not healthy. These westerners had all the advantages in technologies & raw materials but they are mean to invest in these developing countries. Then come China in a few decades ago and now they are leading in green technologies & raw material because they are prepared to invest long term in all these developing countries with slow return but the world is big enough or plenty of room or others long term investers & not greedy short term gain. Peace & good luck.

Nope, I don’t understand why we keep doing dumb shit. We select the most incompetent liars to write our laws, so our laws don’t make any sense and are stupid, so we keep doing things in a stupid way. So now, why are we doing everything the stupid way? Why don’t we make solar panels right here in the USA??
@davidevans2810
@davidevans2810 25 күн бұрын
@@sulittipid9945 the way to do this is quite simple. You don’t use the model we’re using. We’re using a trickle down economic model. Trickle down economics is a fantasy and a lie and a scam. It doesn’t work. so how is any plan we are supposed to implement going to work if it’s based on trickle down economics??? What we should do is do is a government funded factory be opened up and then the batteries be avaible at market price, similar to the Chinese batteries and then let capitalism and free market dynamics take over. But we don’t do that! So of course American cars are going to cost three times as much as Chinese cars. We’re acting like morons. We are failing at capitalism. We used to be half decent at it but the last 40 years we have lost all semblance of lucidity. We now use a fantasy system that doesn’t work. Instead, it’s more like a form of corporate welfare.

The US and European countries persuaded by her to stop the import of cheap stuff related to green energy eg solar panels, ev, etc will result in their citizens paying more locally made products. As a result, they suffer higher cost of living and the global climate change will accelerate because many cannot switch to solar energy if cost is high. So, its a matter of priority for US to decide which is more urgent, is it to stop extreme weathers from happening (by the way North America has much more extreme weather phenomena than other continents) or is it trade War with China?
