How will China respond to the US, Philippines drills in the South China Sea? | DW News

The United States and the Philippines are set to begin their annual ‘Balikatan’ - or “shoulder-to-shoulder” - military exercises. These are the most expansive military drills yet, and come amid a rise in tensions between China and the Philippines.
This year’s drills will include the first-ever military exercises held outside of Philippine territorial waters, in the South China Sea. Those are waters are partly claimed by Beijing. The US and the Philippines have a longstanding mutual defense treaty and at a recent summit in Washington, US President Joe Biden said his country’s commitments to Manila were “ironclad”.
For more on this, we talk to author, columnist and political scientist Richard Heydarian.
And we talk to our East Asia correspondent James Chater, who joins us from Taipei.

The nine dash line is the most greedy thing I've ever seen. How can they justify in their heads, owning territory that is far, far closer to the Philippines, Vietnam and Malaysia? It's honestly genuinely ridiculous. It's not even close to a fair deal. If Beijing wants friends, then they need to stop trying to appeal to racial unity, and start giving everyone a fair shake. As a Filipino taxpaying citizen humour me this.. Our nation The great Republic of the Philippines is navigating towards WAR with China due to the disputed piece of seas which is by the way not our main source of Economy but to those few fishermen whom occasionally catch fish there about 4-5 month's per year due to it's dangerous waves and Philippine's cyclone weather almost half a year, within our EEZ and Chinas 9 dash line. That small part of our territory that Philippines also uses to trade with China using our merchant ships to sail the South china sea. Tapos ngayon maghahamon kami ng gyera sa China kasi nakakaistorbo sila sa mga bapor ng pinas papaunta sa "CHINA" na parang lahat ng pinoy yan ang minimithi kaysa lower prices of Petrol, food and basic commodities. Also peace and order since this new adminstration with Marcos innocent people are dying left and right, atleast the previous duterte admin criminals are subject to killings now it's the taxpayers the people who are playing fair, the 9-5 Filipinos whom wish nothing harm to others but a fight to survive and make ends meet. If we are talking about Colonialism the small seas "Filipinos" are willing to die for because they are in our territory is a no match to the AMERICAN bases here in the Philippines. Americans have 20++ bases here in the Philippines without the blessing of our People.
