The J-10 is not an engineered fighter, but a copied one. Who would trust something as complex as a fighter jet to a country that wasn't able to design it? Questionable quality, stability, reliability, and performance issues are a serious concern with the J-10. The real deciding factor is the ability to service and train on the aircraft. There is also the issue of trust with China. It is not clear if China could disable features remotely.

Copied off of partial plans filled with bad information.......china isnt as slick as they think.The US not only compartmentalizes these projects they understand espionage cant be stopped totally so they make several sets of plans/technical data that is full of bad/fake and each set contains one section of correct data. Basically if you arent holding the key codes to tell which set of plans to use for what part of the build you have wrong data and no one set holds all the correct data. So not only does china not have the ability to build the parts to spec tech wise they never had all the correct data.Some of the reported failures and short comings are from following intentionally incorrect plans

The pricing mentioned here was inaccurately represented. Neither the Rafale nor the F-16 cost anywhere near to $200 to $240 million per jet, as mentioned here. What was sorely missed here is that a LOT more is purchased besides the jets themselves. And, that is especially true when it is a first time purchase, An initial package deal typically includes pilot training specific to the aircraft, basic spare parts, training of service personnel, maintenance tools, software upgrades, typically, an initial batch of weapons such as air-air defense missiles, drop tanks, some customer specific customization/configuration, etc.

👍 You're quite right. It's not just about buying new aircraft, but a complete and comprehensive platform. AFAIK, the latest F-16, aircraft only, is about $70 million. The Rafale (and maybe the F-35 too) is somewhere around $100 million. Depending on configuration. 😎

Honestly the new variants of J-10C compare to the F-16 variants from the earliest to mid 2000s. Jet turbines are extremely hard to make so Chinese has been reliant on Russian engines for a long time, but with the new WS series of engines the Chinese themselves as deemed the new engines to be at least as reliable as or more reliable than the Russian export engines they have been buying. Chinese and Russian engines don't use very much of any or really any specialized materials at all like specialized ceramics, composites, polymers and etc. but they do work and are getting better but they are still decades behind companies like Rolls-Royce, Pratt and Whitney, GE, CFM, Safran, and etc. And Chinese had mad massive use of AESA radars more so than the United States and even though they aren't as good or as efficient as American AESA radars Chinese has been mass producing them and equipping them on basically all their fourth gen fights while the U.S. does not ( not to the same degree at least) and still relies on PESA for most of them so compared to like a Block 60 F-16 the radar is actually better on the J-10C but still worse than the latest Block 70 variant of the F-16. So in some aspects Chinese jets overall tend to have some advantages although not massive but at least decent but at times small advantages over American jets ignoring the latest ones aks the Block 70 F-16 and the F-15EX. So its not that the J-10 series of jets are really that bad, for what they are and the cost they are actually pretty capable and compare to westerns jets from the past decade for the most part ignoring the engines. And the new series of air-air missiles from China specifically the PL series like the 10, 12, and 15 are actually really good and they compare to missiles like the AMRAMM with even longer range although the hit rate is likely worse, but most likely only slightly worse since the American military already sees it as a threat. TL:DR - Chinese jets aren't actually junk or too bad, but they are still worse than the latest American jets like the F-16 Block 70 and the F-15EX but do compare to about 2010s era western jets ignoring the engines that are still decades behind which limits their payload capacity, speed, and efficiency. New missiles from China like the PL series compare almost completely to the current latest American missiles like the Sidewinder-X and the AMRAMM-D but they don't have as large of an amount of them as the U.S. and the U.S. is going to replace the AMRAMM-D (AIM-160) with a new missile very soon with the JTAM (AIM-260).

Yep better than the old Russian design they were using but 1500 hours engine life does not a good engine make. If they were to be used in American jets we would be pulling the engines every 5 months for a full core out rebuild. The f110 (and older f100) engines for the F16 have a lifespan of 8000 hours before major rebuild.

@@BLACKAAROW there are other things to consider too. Serbia is the only country in the Balkans that isnt in EU or NATO, and isnt suggesting that it will be interested to join in the near future. So F35s are an automatic no from Congress, the countries that are close arent on good terms. The only country in the region Serbia has good realtions with is Greece and they also operate the Rafale. Greece also ordered F35s, so the Rafale are either a stepping stone to transition the air force from F16s and Mirage to newer planes or they will be the new backbone with F35s for more specialised and covert roles. In the case that the Rafale is a stepping stone Serbia can probably grab ahold of the second hand Rafales and in the case that Greece will use them as their main fighter plane, they have someone in the region with whom Serbia is on good terms that can supply them with parts and weapons if things with France go south. Also Serbia would have to go to the US to ask for parts weapons and upgrades for the F16 and after the NATO intervention in Serbia, thats is a hard no for Serbia. Thats the way I see it at least.
