Another thing that is often overlooked is the amount of poop they produce. Chinchillas are absolute poop machines and even though it has no odor I quickly needed to adapt to cleaning after them constantly. It is way more than other small animals produce and they often kick it out of their cage.

I have a chinchilla and a French bulldog they play together. The chinchilla is about 4 months older than the French bulldog. I would say its pretty easy to take care of them as long as you have the right cage and I have used a litter pen with rabbit training sand underneath the wood shaves and she usually goes there so I can clean it morning and night and it keeps it cleaner in the cage. Also in the summer I put marble slaps in the shelves instead of fleece so they can keep cool.
@LearnAboutAnimals Жыл бұрын
That's wonderful to hear that your chinchilla and French bulldog are able to play together and that you've found a good system for taking care of them! It sounds like you've put a lot of thought into creating a suitable environment for your pets. Using a litter pen with rabbit training sand underneath the wood shavings is a great way to maintain cleanliness in the cage. This helps in keeping the chinchilla's living space tidy, and it's convenient that she has learned to use the designated area for her bathroom needs. The idea of using marble slabs in the shelves during summer is also clever. Chinchillas are sensitive to high temperatures, and providing cool surfaces like marble can help them regulate their body temperature more effectively. Remember to keep monitoring the temperature and ensuring proper ventilation to prevent overheating, as chinchillas are more comfortable in cooler environments. It's evident that you're committed to the well-being of your pets and have taken appropriate steps to provide them with a suitable living environment. Keep up the good work, and if you have any more insights or tips, feel free to share!

think of their ribs as little tooth picks. yes, they are fragile. if ur child has an impulse to squeeze soft things even after being told that they cannot do that, then no, a chin is not ok for them. and yes they can over heat quite easily. i keep my chin in an area where it never gets above 70 degrees. us humans only have 1-2 hairs per hair follicle. chinchillas have 60-80 hairs per hair follicle. they're fur is so dense that things like lice, ticks, flees, etc would die.

Can Chinchillas be left alone for a weekend getaway if they have a Chinchilla companion, water, grass and food access? Do chinchillas jump on the counter or table if allowed to free roam the house for an hour of so? Can Chinchillas be taught tricks like dogs? Do they need to be given fresh air outside in a play pen daily? Do Chinchilla’s like to be held and cuddled for a long period of time? How often do Chinchillas need to spend time playing with their owner in order to have trust? Is it possible to be a Chinchilla breeder if I get a beautiful male and beautiful female? Can Chinchillas get big in size. Are fleas of ticks a problem if they are kept indoors or in a a good netted playpen when outside? Sorry I have so many questions but I wasn’t able to find it out during my research. I feel like a Chinchilla would be my perfect pet but still researching.
@LearnAboutAnimals Жыл бұрын
(Always check with a vet to confirm) It is not recommended to leave chinchillas alone for a weekend getaway, even if they have a companion, water, and food access. Chinchillas require daily care and interaction, and leaving them alone for an extended period of time can be stressful for them and put their health at risk. Chinchillas are natural jumpers and climbers, so they may jump on counters or tables if allowed to free roam the house. It is important to supervise them and ensure they are in a safe area where they cannot access anything harmful. Chinchillas can learn tricks with positive reinforcement training, but they are not as trainable as dogs. Some common tricks that chinchillas can learn include coming when called, standing up on hind legs, and jumping through hoops. Chinchillas do not need to be given fresh air outside in a playpen daily, but they do enjoy and benefit from supervised outdoor playtime in a safe, enclosed area with plenty of shade and water. While some chinchillas enjoy being held and cuddled, most prefer brief periods of handling and interaction. It is important to handle them gently and respect their boundaries. Trust between chinchillas and their owners develops over time through consistent, positive interactions. Daily playtime and handling can help build trust and strengthen the bond between the chinchilla and owner. It is possible to become a chinchilla breeder, but it requires significant knowledge and resources to properly care for and breed healthy chinchillas. It is important to research and educate oneself on the responsibilities and ethical considerations of breeding chinchillas before pursuing this hobby. Chinchillas are a small, compact species and do not get very big in size, with an average adult weight of around 1-1.5 pounds. Fleas and ticks are not typically a problem for indoor chinchillas, but they can be a concern if the chinchilla is taken outside or if other animals with fleas or ticks are present in the same household. It is important to take preventive measures such as regular cleaning and parasite control to protect the chinchilla's health.

Rather get a hamster. A chinchilla is very very expensive and live very very long times and has too fragile bones for kids, which would end up chinchillas to shoot pee towards your stepson as soon as he opens a door as chinchillas do that when mishandled which kids do. Chinchillas are not to be bought for a child!!! So get rabbit, quinea pigs are good too. So please stay away from such delicate very expensive sensitive animals. Plus he could not play with it as chinchilla is strictly nocturnal waking up when kids go to bed. So it's the LAST choice for a chid. Rather get a dog or rabbit. Those kinds are ok with decent kids. Generally speaking animals should neve be a gift!! Please be realistic in here and only consider chinchilla after he has red a few chinchilla books and has had some other animals first.

@@Helena-ox7cr female chinchillas are the only ones that "shoot pee" and it's a defense mechanism. If the kid is old enough and/or the parents are the primary care givers for it (as kids sometimes loose interest in a pet after a while) then it would be fine.

@LearnAboutAnimals Жыл бұрын
That's an interesting piece of information about your grandpa's involvement in raising chinchillas for fur coat linings. In the past, chinchillas were indeed bred and raised for their valuable fur, which is known for its softness and warmth. The dense fur of chinchillas made them sought after in the fur industry. However, it's important to note that attitudes and practices surrounding the fur industry have changed over time. Today, there is growing awareness and concern for animal welfare, leading to increased scrutiny and regulations surrounding the fur trade. Many people now prefer alternatives to real fur, such as synthetic materials or faux fur, as a more ethical and sustainable choice. This shift reflects a broader movement towards greater compassion for animals and the understanding that they deserve to be treated with care and respect. Can I feed grass from my lawn?
@LearnAboutAnimals Жыл бұрын
Feeding grass from your lawn to your pets can be a common practice, but it's important to consider a few factors before doing so. Firstly, make sure that the grass in your lawn has not been treated with any pesticides, herbicides, or other chemicals. These substances can be harmful to animals if ingested. If you use any chemicals on your lawn, it's best to avoid feeding that grass to your pets. Secondly, ensure that the grass is free from any potential contaminants like feces from other animals or harmful plants that may have grown in your lawn. Cleaning the grass and removing any debris before offering it to your pets is a good practice. For chinchillas specifically, grass is not a natural part of their diet. Chinchillas are herbivores and primarily eat hay, pellets, and fresh vegetables. While a small amount of grass may be offered as an occasional treat, it should not make up a significant portion of their diet. Introduce new foods gradually and monitor your pet's digestion and overall health. If you're considering feeding grass from your lawn to other animals, such as rabbits or guinea pigs, it's important to research their dietary needs and consult with a veterinarian to ensure they receive a balanced diet. Overall, feeding grass from your lawn can be done, but it's crucial to prioritize the safety and health of your pets by avoiding chemicals, contaminants, and maintaining a balanced diet suitable for their specific species.

@LearnAboutAnimals Жыл бұрын
That's an interesting comparison! Seeing chinchillas as a combination of a rabbit and a rat does capture some aspects of their appearance and behavior. Chinchillas do share some similarities with rabbits, such as their large, round eyes and their adorable, fluffy appearance. Like rabbits, they are also herbivorous and have a diet that consists mainly of hay, grass, and other plant materials. However, unlike rats, chinchillas have a more rounded body shape, larger ears, and a bushy tail. They also have a dense, soft coat of fur that helps them stay warm in their native mountainous habitats in South America. Chinchillas are known for their playful and active nature, much like rats. They love to climb, jump, and explore their surroundings, making them quite entertaining pets. Thank you for sharing your unique perspective on chinchillas! It's always fun to see how different people interpret and relate to various animals. If you have any more thoughts or questions about chinchillas or any other furry friends, feel free to share!

I have three chinchillas myself, and you have like what, none? Also, jealousy is such a bad look for you

@@UrLocalGingerBreadI wouldn’t trust a 4 year old with my chinchilla. Chinchillas are very fragile animals.

I have a few friends that have kids, three of them are four, and they get along with my chinchillas. The four year olds even know when to stop touching them.

@@UrLocalGingerBread I have 2 chinchillas and 2 rabbits, 4 is WAY to young an age to have a pet like a chinchilla or any other small animal for that matter.

Reminds me when I was in Fiji and asked for a lemonade. I was expecting something like Country Time lemonade but was surprised when I was handed a Sprite.

Ive had a Chinchilla a long time ago but, the only reason we got rid on them was because well one we could not take care of them as we wanted so we found a new home but also my mom dose not like rats and there poop looks like rat poop so if you don’t like rats/rodents maybe chinchillas aren’t for you. Lol sorry if you disagree
