In past one of mode of transport was horse and horse was like luxurious mode of transport. People used to take carts, go by walk etc but on marriage day they used to hire horses more like in today's day hiring a luxurious car. With time it became a thing people started to follow the same even if time has changed and you can replace horse with something else.
