The electric sportbike from China is officially pretty fast!! Today I do the top speed run and see how much performance it is capable of. It's highway ready for sure, but there was one issue I was running into at the end...
If you're new here, this is the Electric Motorcycle I ordered from Alibaba.com (from china) that was a POS when I got it. Many upgrades and mods later we are here!
The link to the bike and all the information is in this video:
• How I Bought an ELECTR...
BUT, if you're considering buying one like this, watch the whole video. It is very hard to get one of these and you may not get what you pay for.
THE SELLER CHANGED HIS COMPANY NAME TO "Wuxi Jose Vehicles Co., Ltd" ...Avoid them like the plague...and they keep changing their name. information may be outdated at any point. haha

Hi mate, I have built my own scooters twice in China and one could do 117kph. Two tips: You can get a waterproof external mount kit for the controller and mount it where the exhaust silencer would usually be. It looks cool and you'll have great heat dissipation.

If you're worried about the axle nut, you could drill a small hole through the corner of the nut between two flats and safetywire it in the tightening direction (clockwise) to something stationary. It's an aircraft manufacturer technique to keep nuts tight and from backing off during stress and vibration.

Personally I would turn of regen or reduce the level, when going that fast or even just 50 the motor can produce a lot of amps under regen that it is dumping into the controller but the controller will only allow what is safe to get to the battery and the rest is burned of as waste heat and this significantly heats up the controller, the amount of power that gets to the battery through regen is usually never enough to give any significant range benefit, the only benefit is an engine braking effect, I guess the other option is strapping a cooling fan on it.
@WhiskeyGulf71
@WhiskeyGulf71 4 жыл бұрын
EQUINOX Surely if you turn the regen braking OFF the controller will have even more power to have to dissipate ?
@darrengriffith9680
@darrengriffith9680 4 жыл бұрын
This is a really good point. Most ev's ramp up the Regen as the battery dies down to allow room for the regen power. My zero and 500e both do this.
@th3d3wd3r
@th3d3wd3r 4 жыл бұрын
I'll second that. Regen is the destroyer of controllers. Especially if you're close to the mosfet voltage limit. Maybe ditch slip regen and just use an ebrake button or tie in with the lever, your kelly might have variable regen too, so you can gauge how much regen you want on the fly.
@th3d3wd3r

@@WhiskeyGulf71 Nope, They freewheel silky smooth without slip regen. It's literally as if the motor was disconnected during freewheel without regen.
@EQINOX187
@EQINOX187 4 жыл бұрын
@@WhiskeyGulf71 No, when regen is disabled it remains as an open circuit, so when you twist the throttle it closes the circuit letting the power flow and as soon as you let go to coast it opens the circuit so the motor is not technically connected and so cant generate power, this allows it to freewheel smoothly and freely. However with the regen setting he used it was always a closed circuit and in this state it will always generate power and cause resistance and excess energy that leads to heat. Personally on my high power ebike I have regen enabled but only when i pull the brake lever this allows me to save power by coasting/freewheeling down hills but i still have the benefit of engine braking to assist when stopping

Cooling fans is one option but a simple ram air kit should be considered too - these are used on high end sports bikes to direct air into the intake but you could fashion something to pull air over/around the controller. REGARDLESS, I would really like to have an e-motorcycle. Possible horn mods: •a horn on it that would wake the dead •a horn that sounds like high rev •a horn mimicking loud muffler •a horn sounding like a ship siren Something like that.

Require a smart BMS, view cell groups and battery amp draw, or a bluetooth active balancer capable of 2+amps per cell group. The cut-off I’ve experienced on a Kelly controller but I suspect was the BMS setting. I raised the amp capacity of the smart Ant BMS, adjusted the battery amp availability on the Kelly, and had no problems include journeys more than 100km continuous. I only draw 63amp max from my battery. Seventy miles an hour that is great. Want more torque then adjust the available amps from the battery via the Kelly and shorten the time to top speed. Be careful could flip the bike. Awesome video maybe buy one those bikes.

Nope. It's Voltage sag. When you fully open the throttle your voltage is (temporarily (surge)) dropping below the default protect setting. @JD Rides A cap pack (my experience comes from RC cars and drones, similar but smaller scale, lower voltages and higher amps) will smooth the voltage ripple, kind of delaying/reducing the voltage sag a little and depending on the capacity, capable of dealing with high amp draw bursts for a set amount of time. Yet, in the end the battery can only deliver what it can deliver. With or without capacitors. A typical li-ion configuration will deliver up to 60A per parallel cellpack. A 8k watt motor(assuming its peak) @64-84V will draw up to 130A on high load (acceleration). A 3P or 4P configuration should be able to deliver that with ease. A few bad cells on the wrong places could ruin it though. If you have a 10+% voltage drop on full throttle acceleration i'd look in that direction first. Measuring their internal resistance can give some insight.

Yes, I've experienced similar to both of my ebike & escooter. I'm guessing this can be limited in the controller settings, to prevent the throttle from drawing more than what the battery has. Otherwise, a slow increase of throttle input could do the trick.

I couldn’t see your battery voltage, but I had almost the exact same symptoms on my lil ebike. It ended up being that my battery was just not quite powerful enough and after a bit of use and the voltage had dropped, when I throttled hard it would under voltage causing the controller to cut out. Turning it off and waiting a little let me use it again but if I throttled too hard it would keep shutting off. Hope this helps!

You can do a tiny fan mod on the controller so that it receives flowing air all the time. Another good alternative would to have small vents near the controller and channels that direct airflow onto the controller. A combination of both can be good too.

awesome job on the bike. one way to know for sure if its the controller overheat cutoff, is to remove the mock tank and do same test again to allow you to physically put a gloved hand on controller testing to see if its thermal or not if its hot through a glove time to make some air ducts under body work to direct airflow to it

Sweet bike good job! If you want more peace of mind with the axle nut just drill a hole through both the nut and axle. Remove the nut and drill holes on every side so you can insert a cotter pin and still hit the hole when the nut is tightened in any position.

i Had one of those problems on my ride too, so I decided to search for a better controller with cpu dual fans. And before to resolve the safety cut off I took the metal casing and just drill holes in it. Downside is you can’t ride out in heavy downpour. Not unless you buy water proofing spray to coat it. But be careful problems like that much exertion can cause your bike to blow up. Change your controller soon or you may also cause a wire to melt. You’d be surprise at the hub motor roaring with the correct controller ,makes it sound like a Super car.

If you're riding and it cuts out, try to baby the bike to the speed limit rather than pinning it at WOT - it could be a hot battery OR a hot inverter (or whatever it uses). Another thing that can cause it is voltage drop causing the controller to cut out when you open up the throttle. You're running a much better motor than the bike originally came with.

I just don't blood bought a Hisunyes V6 e-moto, & CAN'T WAIT to get it! 👍 It already comes pretty much decked out, with 300mm rotors, good hydraulic brakes, & a bunch of other cool goodies, you can get it with a 2kw motor, up to 8kw motor. The top speed starts at 55mph, & depending on motor size, goes up from there It looks like a "CyberGrom"!!! 💯😂👍

Nice man, Great results! Kelly’s are great controllers but they are pretty basic. The motor can only spin so fast at the rated voltage regardless of amperage (kv rating). Since it’s a hub motor that means no gears so your basically stuck at that speed more or less. A way to overcome that is to use a controller with flux weakening. This will allow the motor to spin faster at the expense of torque at higher speeds.

Like said, probably the controller overheating and shutting itself off for protection. Listen to the guys saying they water cooled one or figure a way to get more airflow and heat sync on it to pull the heat away. Folks do crazy water and air cooling on pc's all the time and some of those ideas might crossover to what you're doing. That thing is moving really good now and you have it most of the way dialed in. Now for more fine tuning and making it as efficient as possible. Love watching it get better and better. Then you get to find out the range to go with the fast.
