As a Shanghai born and raised person, I highly recommend you guys try the XiaoTao noodle restaurant where is located at 222 Jiashan Road. It’s 100% authentic Shanghainese cuisine. The spicy minced pork BanMian(the dry version noodles without the broth) is the best. I usually order a bowl of spicy minced pork noodle with a pan fried egg and SuJi(a special kind of tofu).

I am a 60 year old Shanghainese. I suggest that you try to avoid shopping and dining in tourist areas. Generally, Shanghainese can only visit Nanjing Road a few times in their lifetime. There are many areas in Shanghai with Shikumen architecture worth visiting, such as the areas near the south and north of Huaihai Middle Road.

You can see the similar dishes as Zhejiang and Suzhou cuisine in Benbangcai (local cuisine). Because old Shanghainese is basically immigrants from Suzhou, Ningbo, and other places of Jiangsu and Zhejiang. Zhejiang, Sunan, Subei, and Bendi (indigenous) people poured into Shanghai after 1840. Their cultural fusion formed the Shanghai dialect and cuisine

As a native Shanghainese, I'm very glad that you like our Shanghai cuisine. The first dish you order is a very traditional Shanghai cuisine call"Spice Salt Ribs(椒盐排条)“, the spice is a mix with salt, white saseme, licorice and Sichuan pepper.(the ingredient may differ from every family). And yes, we put sugar in every dishes, even when stir cabbage we will put a little teaspoon of sugar, because we think it will brings out the freshness of food.

Hi Luke and Naomi, love your videos! Just want to say, generally most of the Chinese dishes you need to eat it with white rice. You don't just eat the dish with no or noodle. For example that sweet and sour fish, the crab roe tofu, the tea shrimps all need to be eaten with rice. Without the rice sometimes the flavour is just too strong because they are suppose to be paired with rice.

The three places in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai are the most economically developed areas in China. They are close to each other, and their eating habits are similar. The dishes are sweet. The characteristics of Shanghai are Braised pork belly in brown sauce and Xiaolongbao, but they are not unique to Shanghai. Jiangsu and Zhejiang also have them. So don't be surprised to see the same, just like Chongqing and Sichuan have hot pot
Coastal areas in the east are the most economically developed regions of China.

It is best known for the Mogao Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site that houses thousands of Buddhist murals and sculptures, showcasing the fusion of art and spirituality over centuries. The city also features stunning desert landscapes, including the nearby Singing Sand Dunes and Crescent Moon Spring, making it a unique blend of history and natural beauty.

Shanghai and Suzhou are not only geographically very close (the train stations in the city centres of these two cities are only 86km away), but they are also in the same dialect region (the Wu dialect region), thus the food is very similar. However, this region is also diverse due to transport being not easy in old times because of the river network in this region, thus each city developed its own style. For instance, the Xiaolongbao in Shanghai is always clear filling (steamed pork mince is light in colour) with no or very little soy sauce (you can't see the colour of soy sauce in the filling) while the same dish in Suzhou is always red filling (with soy sauce and its colour). They taste differently, too. Suzhou food is a tad sweeter (people from other parts of China say that Shanghai food is sweet, but to people from this region, it's not. Suzhou is a bit sweeter. Wuxi is 5X sweeter and that's for savoury dishes) and Suzhou makes better noodle soup.

Jiangsu Province in the Qing Dynasty had a wide range of areas and included many prefectures such as Songjiang Prefecture. Shanghai County was subordinate to Songjiang Prefecture. From the perspective of large provincial administrative divisions, it was within the jurisdiction of Jiangsu. The seat of government of Songjiang Prefecture is located in present-day Songjiang District, Shanghai. Shanghai County is an important part of Songjiang Prefecture.

I really wish the police could arrest those who sell fakes, they are so humiliated! Only Shanghai has a lot because they only attack foreigners, and the locals don't pay attention to them. The reason why they weren't arrested was because what they did wasn't actually illegal, just immoral. And they don't sell it on the spot, they will take you somewhere, so it's not easy to find evidence. Now that there are more and more foreign tourists, I hope that the local government will pay attention to this matter.
