A Chinese national who was attached to the state-owned Aviation Industry Corp of China and actively worked on hypersonic weapons has switched sides.
This has grave implications since the hypersonic weapon is one space where the U.S is lagging behind.
The US officials were left stunned when a Financial Times report revealed that Beijing had tested a nuclear-capable hypersonic missile in August last year.
The US has been facing difficulty in this technology - for example, in December the Air Force’s Air-Launched Rapid Response Weapon (ARRW) failed in testing for the third time running in 2021, not even leaving the wing of the B-52 bomber carrying it.
But things could now change now.
In this video Defense Updates analyzes how the defection of Chinese scientist working on hypersonic weapons to the U.S is a major victory?

Reminds me of when in 1976 a Soviet pilot defected :to Japan with a Mig 25. The much hyped Russian jet was found to have many flaws. I suspect Chinas hypersonic missiles will turnout to be much adieu about nothing.

@@icecold9511 the "release failure" may have still been in the missile. As I would imagine there is some form of POST that happens prior to release(especially for a test like this), if the POST failed, the release mechanism wouldn't release, no engine ignition, etc. Ergo "Test failure."

The US has the fastest hypersonic missile in the world called the Ground Based Midcourse Defense capable of mach 33 source below and has had hypersonic missiles since the 1970s and im not talking ballistic, google AIM54 flew on the F14s. This will just give the US knowledge of the Chinese program and how far behind they and Russia are. The US prefers subsonic missiles as they can maneuver and sea skim below the radar horizon unlike hypersonic missiles. "The GBI consists of a 3-stage solid rocket boost vehicle which can place it's payload of an Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicle outside the earth's atmosphere. In order to do this the missile must reach an escape velocity of more than 6.9 miles per second. This hypersonic speed is several times what a 7.62mm bullet travels leaving the muzzle of a gun. To put it another way, it reaches a speed of approximately Mach 33."

They're hypersonic boost glide weapons. A warhead from an ICBM hits it's target at about 8 kilometers per second, that's Mach 23. A boost glide changes the reentry course, trading speed for range because it's an actual aircraft, a glider Currently all technology is designed to look for and intercept ballistic missiles, this new trajectory makes those defenses somewhat ineffective and current defenses for defeating low altitude weapons like cruise missiles and Bombers cannot hit this hypersonic version As far as I can tell, nobody has an operational airbreathing hypersonic cruise missile.

We have a hypersonic weapons program. It's just classified. We don't tell the entire world "unlike our adversaries" every time we field a weapon system. Catching your enemy off guard and unprepared can give you a quick win. Like stealth did in early Iraq. Or us capping bin laden in Pakistan. I still haven't seen a stealth chopper and it's going on a decade. Our hypersonic weapons program is called "conventional prompt strike" and currently deployed on wings, shores and ships all around the world. ARRW was an airforce program and discontinued. Our military branches are different compartments for security reasons. And routinely have multiple weapons programs running at the same time without any knowledge its happening. We had a hypersonic glide vehicle in 2015 that hit Mach 20. We just didn't see a reason to field the weapon. Don't get me wrong if someone wants to defect all the better. But please don't think our military is sitting on its thumbs. Our leadership might be lol though. 😆

The only defense against hypersonic missile whether glide vehicles or not, lasers are the only way to go, because to use a kinetic warhead means you'll have to detonate it earlier and further from the said hypersonic missile, which if it has very good agility and maneuverability, it'll have time to react and take appropriate evasive measures and maneuvers to miss the explosion therefore carrying on to it's mission objectives, acquiring the target and finishing it's mission objectives, so success on one side and failure on the other. The escape zone of the interceptor missiles would have to be absolutely massive, Meteor BVR missiles have a 65km no escape zone, the largest in its class, well any class of air to air missiles system. Another way is a microwave beam, powerful enough to fry electronics and computer chips and processors, or yiu could try creating a system program that searches every single frequency modulations, going through thousands in all bands, until it identifies the missiles code and programming which can be changed, switched on or off, deleted etc....etc..... activate self-destruct l, attack it through it's ability to Network, what ever it takes. A combined an electro-optical laser coupled with a gas laser all included in a weapon that uses a microwave beam.

no the df17 is a useless weapon. its not accurate enough to hit a target with a conventional warhead, so they put a nuclear warhead in it so even if it miss target by a few dozen miles, it will still be okay. although they call it a carrier destroyer, imo any icbm can do it just as good. majority of US icbm is hyersonic as well so china new weapon dotn really offer anything new.
