When Chinese multimillionaire Chen Guangbiao placed ads in the New York Times and Wall Street Journal announcing he would buy lunch for 1,000 disadvantaged New Yorkers before handing them each $300, the city's poor were understandably excited. That excitement would soon turn to anger.
This past Wednesday, VICE News attended the circus-like event. Two hundred and fifty disadvantaged people - not the 1,000 advertised - were treated to lunch at the swanky Central Park Boathouse. And none of them were told that there would be no cash handout.
When they found out, things turned ugly.

xirsamoht x Yeah....cause it's not like those who are currently homeless ever had anything of value, right? What an insanely ridiculous statement to make, when in all reality YOU HAVE NO CLUE WHATSOEVER, as to whether ANY of those folks were/weren't homeless. Also, before you try the "well why didn't he sell that stuff for rent money," ponder the fact it might've been a gift from an important person in their life, handed down from a cherished family member whom passed away, etc, etc, etc.

He did the right thing giving it to a shelter to feed them. Think what would have happened to a bunch of homeless people walking into that mob with 300 dollars. Absolute bs because those people took a bus to that shelter and then were bitching that they don't even use it. The guy did the right thing donating it, and if you are on those peoples sides thinking they had anything on their mind leaving a shelter to do anything but drugs with that 300 bucks you really need a reality check.

How is that a "con." The shelter shelters homeless people. They interact with the homeless on daily basis giving the homeless a safe place to sleep. They know that giving homeless people a bunch of money wouldn't benefit them in the long term because they would spend it on stupid shit or get robbed. How do you help the homeless?
@danielphelps9687
@danielphelps9687 7 жыл бұрын
"worthless ingrates"? - that's awful. You should be ashamed of yourself. The majority of homelessness is due to mental illness and bad luck. Very often it's temporary while folks get back on their feet. What the hell are you talking about? The issue here is that folks were promised something that never happened. I'd be upset, too. Being homeless doesn't mean you shouldn't be upset when someone promises you $300 and then goes back on that. If anything, someone who is homeless should be more upset because that money would benefit them so much.

Not the whole story. This was his original plan until a few organizations got angry and threatened him if he went through with it. He was allowed to feed the homeless, but when he planned to hand them money, several church organizations, including the Boathouse, refused to accommodate him. And they intentional downplayed this in the media so the Chinese millionaire will take the rap.

If you ever become homeless, which i hope you dont, and someone comes forward saying they'll provide you with money that could help out your situation and they dont, i hope that you have no anger in anyway towards them when you dont receive your cash and you go back to living in a shelter in peace

I became homeless for 2 months due to a legal battle with my shady as hell landlord who had illegals punch multiple holes into my apartment roof, steal my furniture in that unit moving process... and STILL try to get me out. I was in the right, 100% of the time, paying that rent while shit was going wrong with my apartment, working my ass off and everything. I ended up winning AFTER I had to suffer becoming homeless due to their negligence and the backwards court system having to work it out afterwards. Homelessness is definitely NOT "mostly" anything. After reading the comments, it has become clear to me that many are repulsed by the homeless and it's sad to see that everyone of those people think that these people are all drug addicts. I want to remind those people that this economy hasn't recovered and many of those that were laid off still haven't been given a job opening because the entire job market has become a "first come, first serve" mess. Like the reporter said at the end at 8:05, those people wasted their time from the beginning of the day to the end waiting for that $300 because they could do so much with it. I can't tell you how many times I've seen a homeless person being turned away from a job opening because they can't afford decent clothing. These people try and try and try but fail because our society portrays them all as filthy drug addicts. I've seen grown men cry from those struggles because of this "recovery". To those who hate the homeless, I want to ask you something. Have you ever spoken to a homeless person? I don't mean a friendly little chit chat about the weather but actually sitting down with them and letting them tell you their story. Once you do, you change your perspective completely. Put yourself in their shoes. You wasted a good sleeping spot, the potential for a new job opening, the whole day for one small meal that won't satisfy your hunger then you are denied that money because people think that it would encourage drug use. 7:50 Why wouldn't you be angry? These people wanted help and the corrupted system we have isn't going to help them. They needed that money to give themselves the opportunity to stop being homeless and instead have been lied to. I sure as hell wouldn't call that fair.

Many of those people haven't given up. That's why they took the time to come there. They aren't making any excuses. They are in a situation where they are making moves all the time, some more lucky than others. You're mistaking the stories that people are asking them for as excuses.

@@flacadiabla3193 That's not the point. They attended, with the promise that they'll have free lunch AND cash. They had their lunch, alright. But they did not get the other half of the promise all because there was some "miscommunication" between the billionaire and the Mission that was to receive the cash. It's both scummy and irresponsible. I did some additional digging on this whole situation. Apparently, it was the Mission who convinced Chen to not hand over the money to them directly but rather give it to them in lump sum. And even if they were going to use the money as intended, only a few of the attendees will actually benefit from it.

A billionaire promises to feed the homeless and there is outrage if he accomplishes less than promised. The government wages a 50 year “War on Poverty,” spending trillions of taxpayer dollars, but leaving the poverty rate unchanged. Where is the outrage here? It is interesting that we hold businessmen to a much higher standard than politicians. Or put differently, we expect waste and failure from government, so are not as disappointed when it fails. But we expect businessmen to pull unicorns out of their butt on a quarterly basis.

All of you who are saying these people should be grateful for a free meal need to actually use your thinking skills and realize that a small little plate of food and a bread roll have nowhere near the amount of calories that were spent by most of the homeless people walking to Central Park. More importantly, as they said in the video, many of these homeless people gave up spots in shelters and rehab clinics to attend the event, so leaving that out of your comments clearly shows how many of you were too ignorant to watch the video and pay attention before jumping to the comments section to bash people who you don't even make an effort to understand.

By giving the money to the rescue mission, the homeless are dependent on making their way across town to get the place. That helps them for a day, but it does not help them get a chance to get back on their feet and get a job. $300 could have given them hotel rooms, haircuts, clothing, and food from a place closer to them than the center of Manhattan; all of which could help them make a better impression to get employed and start making their own money.

Are you somehow confused in life? Would you rather take 300$ cash allowing you to maybe treat yourself and family to a decent meal or anything else in life that may require actual cash, or reject the 300$ happily in return for the chance to sit in a mess hall with 100 or so strangers eating some slop you have no choice in? The problem is, they were told they would receive $300 cash. They were sent to 2 different places being told they would receive money, then they doesn’t get what they were promised. It’s no different if your boss said “I’m going to give you an extra $1,000 for Christmas.” And christmas rolls around, no extra money. He said “I’ll give you the money in New Years”, still, no money. Then he says “yeah, I don’t trust you to use this money on something that can harm you, like to tobacco, alcohol, a new car, etc. so I’m not going to give you a bonus.” You would be mad. Most people would be mad.

I get it. They didn't "earn" that money. But false advertising to the homeless is still false advertising. If you were told that if you order one large pizza, and you can get one large pie for free, and when you called to get it, they were like hey, we won't give you the other large pie, well donate a dollar for you to some organization instead. Some people may be okay with that, but they're still gonna be like then why the fuck did you advertise free pie? You didn't pay for that pie, so you're not losing anything. Fact is, these people were told one thing and completely lied to. This dude just wanted free PR. And how insulting to be told you can't handle 300 dollars. There's so many ways this could have been misinterpreted. Possibly he said that he would donate $300 per person, always intending to give that amount to be distributed in services. Was there anything in writing? Why does no one produce it? Anyway, they all got a lovely free meal and drinks. I actually heard one man complained that he didn't get the salmon meal, when he had been eating a plate of well cooked medium rare roast beef, with gourmet salad. What an ingrate! They got what was on the invitation and if there was nothing written about the money, then they have no claim whatsoever. The money went to the mission and that's it. Just another example of entitled people, who are owed NOTHING! This philanthropic gift may have had a flaw or two, but it deserves more respect than this...

In that case, it's wrong because the person's time has been used and went towards making the employer wealthy. Naturally, if you're working you expect something in return. You deserve it. People have their own problems without having to take on the problems of 100 more families who can't seem to help themselves. That's why. Homelessness has been around since day 1 and guess what? There are still homeless people. Ever put much thought into why?

Few do. Ive talked to many that say they can make $200+ a day on panhandling. And they choose to use that money to get drunk or high not help themselves. I live in houston by the freeway and I use to roll a blunt bake some brownies and get a gallon of milk and go smoke them out and chill with the few that were just trying to make it.

cameron sheehan if you have talked to homeless you will know that for most of them it's mental health issues making them homeless and not from lack of money.

Except the things these people gave up to get a small meal are far more valuable and $300 would have actually made the event not cost them. Rehab, nights at shelters, even the energy and calories spent getting to the event were more than what would have been in that meal. It's one thing to deny people something, and it's another to take from them something that they desperately need.

90,000÷500=180... So the mission is going to spend $180.00 per person.... That seems like something VERY STRANGE, I don't believe they will feed the homeless... A lot of the food they use to feed the homeless is donated. It's more like the directors of the shelter will LINE THEIR POCKETS WITH THE MONEY...

This just shows how many takers there are rather than givers. Yeah they were told they would be given $300 but they still got a free and very good, expensive looking lunch. They need to stop complaining at look at the fact that this guy went out of his way to give to them.

Sad, if that Mr Chang what to give 250 doller to homeless people let hem give. If they buy drugs or food it is there choise to do what they want. With the 250 doller they can change there life or be stay in there shit life and byijng drugs. So rude of the organisation to think all homeless are drugspeople.

Not even with auto-correct can you spell right. You are wrong on so many levels. The money is not suppose to go to drugs. Drugs aren't going to help them one bit get out of poverty. The money isn't going to help them either, all it's doing is giving them undeserved money to spend on extravagant things. They need to learn how to handle money, make better morale decisions and how to invest. In less than two weeks, all these people would have returned to the same position if the cash was given.

HARRY JC the ungrateful and undeserving will always be the loudest and most violent when it comes to thing that aren't their own. they should be grateful that somebody was willing to support the organization that keeps them going every day, and didn't give that money to people who 95% would has squandered, and by squandered i mean buying things that are just for day to day survival and not for getting ahead. some people want to get ahead in life and get back on their feet, not stay where they are. unfortunately too many will just take 300, and buy some socks, maybe some used shoes, and then food for 3-4 months until they start looking for more handouts. a shelter is going to not only provide them with things they need to survive, but also the ability to get back on their feet. so its better that it went to the organization instead of going to people who don't want to change their life, they are just content.

See, the organization probably knows that a lot of these people would squander it on drugs, because these are the people they have first hand experience with (on account of them living in the building the shelter people own) these people, or at least a large portion of them. While you are right in it being his money and his right to give it to whom he chooses, it was good for the organization to advise against it- otherwise much of this WOULD have gone to drug dealers, financing gangs and leaving the city worse for wear. If $250 can change their life, they should get jobs at fast food restaurants; they'll have to work longer than 40 hours a week, but they'll accumulate the capital pretty rapidly.

In California there's a huge drug epidemic among the homeless which is why so many people wont give more than 3 or 4 dollars. Many homeless people spend the money on drugs and vandalize properties and bathrooms.
