My friend Evan and I, two white guys who speak extremely good Mandarin and some Cantonese, went grocery shopping in NYC Chinatown the other day. We walked up to various Chinese vendors, started speaking with them in English, and then switched over mid-conversation to Mandarin and Cantonese. Their reactions were hilarious! Hope you enjoy this day in our lives! And hopefully this is helpful to you guys in your language learning journeys!

@exoticgirl1
@exoticgirl1 4 жыл бұрын
@@Vampyresdontdodishes in case you aren't aware of this, and I seriously do not mean to be disrespectful or patronizing: there is absolutely no more organic. Here's why: All the food, seeds and everything you buy is (unfortunately) genetically modified. Including organic food, seeds you buy to grow your own crops and so on. Also, all the food is genetically engineered to be more sturdy, richer in flavor, have more perfect colors and shapes and be more resistant to mold and disease. One perfect example is the banana! Every single banana (not the ones you fry but the normal ones) are all genetically identical. They are clones of one single tree and heavily modified for consumption. The original bananas has a lot of seeds in them so they modified them into what we have today. But the banana you eat in America and the one I eat in the Netherlands is the exact same banana genetically speaking. Also, after Chernobyl, Fukushima, Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the other 32 nuclear disasters,everything we eat and drink is radioactive. This has caused a spike in cancer, deformations, birth defects, auto immune problems and a lot more. It's astounding that no scientist, no government and the CDC ever mention this but my fair guess is that it's out of gain of a lot of profit (pharmaceutical industry and your for profit health insurance companies) but also to prevent chaos. And they see another possible benefit!! Massive depopulation! This is also why nobody talks about the fact that Fukushima is still leaking radioactive material into the ocean. so "healthy food" or "organic food", they are non existent and only drive up the prices. This is also the reason, by the way, why the American establishment is trying to avoid one payer universal healthcare because than a lot of for profit health insurance companies will see their billions of dollars a year profit evaporate. A few people get filthy rich of misery, so they love to keep the misery going.
@Vampyresdontdodishes
@Vampyresdontdodishes 4 жыл бұрын
exoticgirl1 I don’t have an option either way- but that is the “traditional” definition of what an organic egg is. I myself have my own hens so I figure I get the best eggs I can physically get. I think people should ask if market eggs are farm fresh instead of organic IMO.

What your videos show is the importance by engaging with everyone on the street and showing empathy and giving to total strangers resulting in doors opening up. Even not being able to speak another language I'm learning how to engage socially better. Everything now seems to be credit card based so now make sure of carring around a little cash to give to the less fortunate, buskers and for tips. The rewards reaped from receiving a smile in return by giving time and a little gift having made someones day better is priceless

Super curious Little tata If you are at a healthy skinny, then yes it’s a good thing. If you are too skinny and I can see your bones, then of course it will be a bad thing. All I can say is that, most Chinese relatives will either say that you are “too skinny” and that you “need to eat more”, or that “you’re fat” and “you should eat less”. So do not mind too much what they say because I’ve never met any Chinese relatives that go “you are just right, eat normally”. Not sure about Koreans but this is my understanding 😊

However, in this case, the old man was being honest with his opinion. The way he said it is not meant as an insult, more like a fact just to notify the guy. Like a friendly “Hey, I just wanted to let you know that, in case you weren’t aware, you’re gotten chubbier. This is so that, if you want to, you can do something about it because now you know.” Sorry, but with Chinese peeps it’s highly unlike to hear “you’ve become chubbier” as a compliment, unless you were VERY VERY skinny before, where it looks unhealthy.

It's because Mandarin can be very expressive with it's tone and once you get into that headspace the language makes more sense. It's no longer gibberish but you hear the slight differences and the very different way in which Mandarin speakers pronounce words. Like French, it's all in the back of the throat, Italian and Spanish it's all about the rolling of r's etc.

Yeah English is my first language but I've also learned a lot of Spanish so for the whole process whenever my classmates would complain about the grammar or irregulars, my teachers would just compare it to English to shut them up like "oh you think that this is hard? Well here's a worksheet on the same thing but for English. Now tell me this is hard"
@ladygremlin8287

@@assasination1100 English is pretty easy comparitively as it's a very fluid language. While many languages require male/female derivatives of almost everything or have characters for words or sentences, English only had the basic gender pronoun plus a single alphabet rather that a parings/combos alphabet style. Yes it's harder to learn new languages once you get older. The best time to teach someone multiple languages is during the infant/toddler stages. However this does not change the fact that English has been and always will be the easiest language to learn

@@ladygremlin8287 no way. english spelling and pronunciation is extremely inconsistent compared to other languages, the grammar is quite confusing at times, you can't identify parts of speech easily, etc. for example, in spanish every verb ends with ir, er, or ar. In Japanese every verb ends with either -ru or -u. polish ones end in ć. all of these make it easy to identify what is what in a sentence. whereas in english, you cant really tell a verb from a noun or an adjective, etc.

It’s a direct translation. In Chinese it’s fine, in English it’s weird. Every language has its own logic, culture and and things you say in different situations.
