People can get plant seeds and meat and dairy products across the Chinese border despite those things being prohibited - Why not a pair of clothes which wouldn't set off any scanner? The top stroke looks too long but it's also possibly a light blemish making it appear that way.

fake. I have a friend who worked in the police force in China and then came to the US. When you leave the police, you must return your uniform and the labels on them. If you want to keep your uniform you need to spend some money. Afterward, if you want to go abroad with a passport, you need approval from the local authorities, which only allows you to leave after you have left the police for at least 3 years. In an area as sensitive as Xinjiang, I would only expect that time to be longer. So either the uniform is just props, or this dude was not in the police force at all.

LOL Tell me you've never been to Xinjiang without telling me you've never been to Xinjiang. Uyghur is a Turkic language with a lot of shared vocabulary from English and other languages. It's a lot easier for them to learn English than it is for Han Chinese for a variety of reasons, including the fact that unlike Mandarin, most of the sounds in English are found in Uyghur (with the "th" sounds as an exception) and the phonetic-based writing system makes it a lot easier for Uyghurs to adapt to English pronunciation and vocabulary. Case in point: The Uyghur word for "airplane" sounds like "arplan," whereas Mandarin constructs a completely different word - fei ji (flying + plane). Unlike Uyghur, Mandarin rarely borrows foreign vocabulary, and even in the cases where it does, Mandarin speakers will struggle to connect foreign words to Mandarin cognates because Mandarin is a tonal language with a very finite set of finsl syllables - A Mandarin speaker who never heard the word "coffee" before will struggle to understand it even though the Mandarin cognate - "ka fei" - is very similar, because the Mandarin-speaking ear is focusing on the tones of the syllables and not the consonant sounds /k/ and /f/ as speakers of other languages do. Many Uyghurs take a strong interest in learning English. My observation of Uyghur college students in Xinjiang is that students help each other - A student gains a conversational level in just two years and then starts teaching his or her own extracurricular English classes to other Uyghur students in mornings and evenings, using "New Concept English" and "Li Yang's Crazy English" methods, and eventually some of those students will go on to teach their own classes. Uyghurs are also not afraid to practice out loud. Whereas many Han students are limited by their Confucian sense of shame about losing face, Uyghurs are not afraid to make mistakes and this is a major asset to their English self-study. During my time working on a college campus in Xinjiang, I would constantly hear pairs of Uyghur students chatting in English together even when one or both are only at a very basic level (not for long). I never saw this with Han students - They would find the concept of practicing English with another Mandarin-speaking student to be tedious and cumbersome so they don't even try (although I was pleasantly surprised to find Taiwanese do not share this attitude).
