Chipping around the green. In this video golf tip Brian Fitzgerald The Golf Doctor shows you chipping around the green 4 ways. There always 4 shots you can play from around the green. You can usually eliminate 2 of these based on the circumstances which then leaves you a choice between 2 shots. This video also contains some chipping tips for hitting to a raised green and a green below you as well.

My name is Brian Fitzgerald - I'm an Australian full time golf coach living in Melbourne and coaching at two venues. The Morack Public GC in Vermont South and the Lang Lang GC in beautiful South Gippsland (An hour and a quarter from Melbourne) where there are lot's of Kangaroos.
FAQ:
How long have you been a golf coach? I qualified as a full member of the Australian PGA back in 1985. Wow I don't feel that old.
Why do you make videos for KZbin? That is a great question and one I get asked a lot. I love helping people play better golf and people tell me I have a very unique coaching style that is very simple to understand. We really should do things simpler. I just make them to help people and if people like my videos they can either come for a golf lesson in person or if that is not possible you could join my membership program and I can then view your golf swing or any part of your game and really help improve what you do.
Do you always change some ones golf swing? To be perfectly honest I try not to. If I do try to change some ones golf swing I have to have a pretty good reason for doing so and the client has to be fully engaged and committed to both regular coaching and practice in order to make that change. Most people say they will do both with good intentions but most fall away pretty quickly.
So my preference is to change things that will improve their score easily. There are so many different ways to do this.
What do you film with? - I have a few few different cameras I use. An old GoPro Hero 4, an iPhone 6 and iPhone X, A Sony ZV1 and an old Panasonic Handy cam (I'm using that less and less now). I record my sound on an old iPhone 4.
What do you edit with? - About a year ago I switched to Adobe Premiere - prior to that it was Pinnacle Studio
Do you make money off KZbin? - Yes.It took me over 100 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense and then another 50 videos to make my next $100. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - Here's my ko-fi where you can buy me a coffee, beer or a burger should you wish (kind of like giving me a tip via : ko-fi.com/thegolfdoctor
Thanks for watching!
Brian

Brian, this is another very good, easy to understand, no nonsense video. I always look forward to watching them on Monday morning (I’m in the UK) and practising in the afternoon.

Thanks Brian, those short shots that need to go up a couple of metres in height are my nemesis. I used to leave them short and have to repeat the shot, now I over do it to make sure I get on the top side of the green and if it over runs I have a down putt.

The key to these shots is the shallow angle of attack and rhythm. The swing needs to be lower to the ground and wider on both sides that creates the shallow angle of attack. The rhythm and timing needs to “feel like” it is the same speed back and through. You can also count 1 and 2 to help you with this. The reality is it will be a 2:1 ratio just like a putting stroke. Give this a go and let me know how you get on. Thanks for watching. Brian

I’ll try and blow it away with a gust from here. It was ridiculously windy here on Saturday. I am sure the rain will pass soon. We are getting closer to opening up but it is numbers based fingers crossed. Thanks for watching. Brian

In the first example I would have automatically gone with my 60 degree. The hybrid (or in my case the 5 wood) is a much better and lower risk choice. You’re making me think about my options and it’s making me a better player. These are great videos and I appreciate your time and hard work. Cheers mate, Steve.

Thanks Steve I appreciate your feedback. My job is to have an impact on scores. If I can get everyone to hit better bad shots this is easily achieved. I am glad I am making you think. Thanks for watching. Brian

This is so helpful as unfortunately we rush into a choice without sufficient thought . On the minus side , our club does not encourage practicing on the course !! So limited to long evenings in the summer months !

I liked this one too Mike. We have clubs here with similar attitudes here. It is very short sighted of them. My solution would be go out on the course and play a few holes and hit either 2 clubs less or 2 clubs more intentionally so you are forced to hit chip shots. Hit a second shot and plead ignorance if someone catches you. Alternatively look for a golf range with a short game area. Or just be creative and use a park or your back yard and work on your landing area. You could also look for a course that does let you practice on the course. Have a great weekend. Brian

I think most amateur players when they approach this kind of situation their mind is in a preset mode like mine chip or pitch. I like the way your 4 step method explores all 4 scenarios and then commit to the best option and I like the idea of database practice. This will be my practice session of the week.Thanks Brian. Great videos

Thanks for the feedback Pangayee. I am glad my videos are making you think. It is exactly why I make these videos. Have fun outing it all into practice and make sure you keep building up that database. Brian

Great video Brian! My ultimate goal is not to chilly dip or skull it across the green and get it close enough for par putt.

I'm glad you enjoyed it Tom. That is a great goal. Try using the hybrid for chipping as much as you can as it is the easiest club to use and requires the least amount of skill. It should help a lot. Thanks for watching. Brian

Gr8 video thanks Brian. Shot #1 from back of 13th is such a difficult shot and had it many times . i have in past gone for high lob, but will now play the hybrid for this shot. I will also try putter from where you were for shot 3, but I really need to try all 4 options.

The last part of your comment is the best. Try all four many times and let the results tell you which was easier. You will be a very different golfer when you make it back to Lang Lang. Brian

G'day Brian, thanks for that. During lockdown, I have been inspired by your last 4 videos or so to experiment and practice in my backyard driving range. I had already chosen to leave the hybrid in the bag because the results were variable. I tried the 7, 8, 9 and pitching wedge. The PW gave the most consistent results at least for me. I could land more balls inside the orange square. It then came down to the lie and the required backswing it being my preferred method to have as shorter backswing as possible. So if the ball is sitting up say on a tuft of grass, its the 60 degree sand wedge or the 52 degree wedge. If its short grass, its the PW or 52 degree wedge.

You have put your down time to good use this lockdown. It’s great you have done your research and come up with a plan that works for you. Hopefully we will be back on the course in 2 weeks and you can see how much you have improved. Thanks for tour thoughtful comment. I hope to see you soon. Brian.

Hi Brian. It would help if you could explain ball position in stance and why you use that position, cos from the camera angle it looks like you're playing each shot back in the stance but camera angles can be deceptive.
@fitzygolfpro
@fitzygolfpro 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question Neil. I try and keep my ball position fairly neutral. Slightly back from middle but only just. If you put the ball too far back it creates too much forward shaft lean which does de loft the club but it also encourages a steeper angle of attack. Not what we want with a standard chip shot. I am always having trouble with my camera man (me). It is quite hard to set every thing up and frame the shot when there is no one standing there. Maybe one day I can have some one help me but that is a long way off. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching. Brian
