Common bunker mistakes. In my 36 plus years of being a golf coach the common link between normal every day golfers is they all seem to struggle at getting out of bunkers. In this video golf tip I discuss the 5 common bunker mistakes golfers make. This is the second video in this series and the link to the first one is in the description below. These should help you to get out of bunkers more easily.
Of course if you struggle just do your very best to avoid them and when you are off the course keep working at it.

My name is Brian Fitzgerald - I'm an Australian full time golf coach living in Melbourne and coaching at two venues. The Morack Public GC in Vermont South and the Lang Lang GC in beautiful South Gippsland (An hour and a quarter from Melbourne) where there are lot's of Kangaroos.
FAQ:
How long have you been a golf coach? I qualified as a full member of the Australian PGA back in 1985. Wow I don't feel that old.
Why do you make videos for KZbin? That is a great question and one I get asked a lot. I love helping people play better golf and people tell me I have a very unique coaching style that is very simple to understand. We really should do things simpler. I just make them to help people and if people like my videos they can either come for a golf lesson in person or if that is not possible you could join my membership program and I can then view your golf swing or any part of your game and really help improve what you do.
Do you always change some ones golf swing? To be perfectly honest I try not to. If I do try to change some ones golf swing I have to have a pretty good reason for doing so and the client has to be fully engaged and committed to both regular coaching and practice in order to make that change. Most people say they will do both with good intentions but most fall away pretty quickly.
So my preference is to change things that will improve their score easily. There are so many different ways to do this.
What do you film with? - I have a few few different cameras I use. An old GoPro Hero 4, an iPhone 6 and iPhone X, A Sony ZV1 and an old Panasonic Handy cam (I'm using that less and less now). I record my sound on an old iPhone 4.
What do you edit with? - About a year ago I switched to Adobe Premiere - prior to that it was Pinnacle Studio
Do you make money off KZbin? - Yes.It took me over 100 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense and then another 50 videos to make my next $100. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - Here's my ko-fi where you can buy me a coffee, beer or a burger should you wish (kind of like giving me a tip) via : ko-fi.com/thegolfdoctor
Thanks for watching!
Brian

Excellent video Brian on Common Bunker Mistakes! This showed up on You Tube this morning and I have never seen it, so needless to say, I will be spending some time with it. I like your initial suggestion regarding wedges and their bounce. Unlike your "packed down" bunkers, ours just had sand added and are now "fluffy!" I find that my LW works better in these than does my SW. I also like the idea that you proposed regarding "opening the clubface." Opening does definitely increase the loft of the club. Well Done Brian! Now let's see if I can execute!!!! :-)

The bounce on your LW might be more than your SW which is why it is working better. 10 degrees + works well in really thick sand (with an open face). Brian

Hi Brian, Thank you for this golden tip. I have known that my footwork is deficient resulting in all manner of problems both in bunkers and in short game in general. The bucket drill is brilliant. 10 minutes of this and my pitching has improved out of sight even if I had to substitute a flower pot for the bucket! Thanks again. cheers, jk

All too often at my course the sand is firm and compacted, so I appreciated your advice NOT to open the club face and have a U shaped swing, with good follow through. I agree that I don’t practice bunker shots enough and will try to remember the bucket drill. Thanks

Thanks for gr8 video Brian. That bunker on 18 is very deep ,and given that the bunker is bigger than the green in area its so its easy to miss a bit left and be in. My second shot in will now aim right to miss this trap. My goal from that bunker is to get out on green first time, as due to slope its also very difficult to get close. Thank you for the tip,, I have a 57/ 11 which I use on most of bunkers at Langy, and a 60/ 8 if bunkers are wet and firm. my fault on this hole is 5. I tend to swing too short so need to swing longer to get ball out I will practice that shot as soon as I can get back to course.
@fitzygolfpro
@fitzygolfpro 3 жыл бұрын
These videos are probably causing you more pain than helping your golf as you see how good the course is and you can't get there. Sorry to do that to you. Those strategies sound good. It is certainly a bunker you don't want to be in. Swinging longer with your 60/8 would be a great idea. I can't think of many bunkers at Lang Lang where I would use the 57/11.

Good video Brian, I have been practising a lot in my diy bunker, however the sand is much softer than Morack. In a scenario where the sand is packed hard, should you use a slightly steep angle of attack with your swing, to minimise the risk of blading the ball out? Mike.
@fitzygolfpro
@fitzygolfpro 3 жыл бұрын
Good to see you are working on all parts of your game while in lock down Mike. I was hoping we could all get back on Monday.....but....... The only bunker shot where you need a steeper angle of attack would be a buried bunker shot. Shallow is the way to go for all others. I would be paying attention to the bounce angle of your sand wedge and what happns to the bounce of the club if you open or close the club face. I am looking forward to catching up with you at Morack again very soon. Brian

Great tips Brian, with your set up, are you actually aiming at ball knowing club will actually strike just behind ball though?
@fitzygolfpro
@fitzygolfpro 3 жыл бұрын
I am glad you enjoyed it Simon. I have to say I don't think about the ball at all. I am aiming somewhere behind the ball. If you think about the ball you will hit the ball and that is not the desired outcome. Thanks for watching. Brian

Will the R foot in the bucket work for other shots, not in the sand, to help prevent leaning to the right? I really enjoy your videos and the straight forward explanations. Thanks from San Diego, Ca. United States.

hey @george k thanks for your question and I am glad you like my videos. I always try to make them as simple and as well as I can. I have never been to San Diego but I always think of the Americas cup and Dennis Connor when I hear it mentioned. One day I might over there and play some golf. The bucket on the foot exercise works in a whole variety of shots. I have placed a couple of links to older videos I have made on this subject. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJ-ueYyOnb2shrM kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z6TSeX-Ae96bgNk Thanks for watching. Brian

Great video Brian. When would you open and close the face? PS. Are you still in lockdown?
@fitzygolfpro
@fitzygolfpro 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I am David. We were hopening for a re open next week but it is not looking like it will go that way. Who knows when we will be back to golf here in Victoria???? Opening the club face increases the bounce of the club so in really soft sand where there is a lot of sand this would be helpful. Closing the club lowers the bounce of the club so in situations where there is fine or compacted sand this would be beneficial. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for caring. Brian
@davidwalters313
@davidwalters313 3 жыл бұрын
fitzygolfpro Thanks Brian. We have deep fine sand usually so I will tend to open the face and give it a try. Your lockdown seems to be going on for ages. I suppose you must have had lots of cases although in such a huge sparsely populated country you would think it would not be such a problem compared to Europe. Lets hope with the summer coming they relax things a little
@fitzygolfpro
@fitzygolfpro 3 жыл бұрын
That’s how I would approach it too with a slightly open club face. We have been in lockdown for 21 of the last 27 weeks. We are close but not yet apparently. Melbournians are frustrated and have lock down fatigue. Fingers crossed. Stay well. Brian

we have a very deep and very soft sand on a narrow green with a drop off on the other side. You have to hit it hard, perfect without mistakes so it requires a high shot, every takes two to escape
@fitzygolfpro

Hey Chris. That is a tough shot. I would be doing everything I could to avoid that bunker. It sounds a bit like Big Bertha a bunker on the left hand side of the famous Par 3 15th hole at Kingston Heath here in Melbourne. It's ok to miss the green somewhere else and make an easy bogey than have to hit a great bunker shot for a much tougher bogey. Here's a couple of links to other videos I have made which might be of help. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5vXn4yMdqh5btU kzbin.info/www/bejne/rGfUdamQpsp6adU Thanks for your comment and for watching my video.
