Common chipping mistakes. Following on from my last two videos. In this video golf tip, Brian Fitzgerald The Golf Doctor shows you 6 common chipping mistakes I see golfers make. Most of these mistakes are to do with club selection and choosing the right shot rather than technical flaws.
Fixing any one of these flaws will make a difference to your golf score. If you can fix more it will really impact your score.

My name is Brian Fitzgerald - I'm an Australian full time golf coach living in Melbourne and coaching at two venues. The Morack Public GC in Vermont South and the Lang Lang GC in beautiful South Gippsland (An hour and a quarter from Melbourne) where there are lot's of Kangaroos.
FAQ:
How long have you been a golf coach? I qualified as a full member of the Australian PGA back in 1985. Wow I don't feel that old.
Why do you make videos for KZbin? That is a great question and one I get asked a lot. I love helping people play better golf and people tell me I have a very unique coaching style that is very simple to understand. We really should do things simpler. I just make them to help people and if people like my videos they can either come for a golf lesson in person or if that is not possible you could join my membership program and I can then view your golf swing or any part of your game and really help improve what you do.
Do you always change some ones golf swing? To be perfectly honest I try not to. If I do try to change some ones golf swing I have to have a pretty good reason for doing so and the client has to be fully engaged and committed to both regular coaching and practice in order to make that change. Most people say they will do both with good intentions but most fall away pretty quickly.
So my preference is to change things that will improve their score easily. There are so many different ways to do this.
What do you film with? - I have a few few different cameras I use. An old GoPro Hero 4, an iPhone 6 and iPhone X, A Sony ZV1 and an old Panasonic Handy cam (I'm using that less and less now). I record my sound on an old iPhone 4.
What do you edit with? - About a year ago I switched to Adobe Premiere - prior to that it was Pinnacle Studio
Do you make money off KZbin? - Yes.It took me over 100 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense and then another 50 videos to make my next $100. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - Here's my ko-fi where you can buy me a coffee, beer or a burger should you wish (kind of like giving me a tip via : ko-fi.com/thegolfdoctor
Thanks for watching!

I just found this video Brian on chipping that I have not seen after you recommended it at the end of today's chipping video! All six common chipping mistakes as you pointed out are easily corrected. Almost of your suggestions I adhere to. The only one I have to be careful with is my landing spot. For some reason, our frog hair grass doesn't release the ball onto the green. Therefore, I have to pick a landing area no more than three feet onto the green for long chips! For shorter chips of course, it is closer in to the frog hair. All valid points as usual Brian! Well Done!!!
@fitzygolfpro
@fitzygolfpro 9 ай бұрын
I thought you had seen them all John. I am glad you found it. The closer to you the landing area is the easier the shot becomes so the type of grass shouldn't matter too much. That will cause the ball to roll more or less depending on the surface. Focusing on the landing area is the most important element of chipping. Brian

We have a lot of kikuyu grass here in Southern California Brian and I call it "grab grass!" I think the course superintendent also keeps his frog hair too long because of the limited water supply.@@fitzygolfpro

Thanks Fitzy. I think about what is the least stressful shot to get my ball on the green. I’d look at using my putter first, then a 9 iron and I like using my 5 wood. It’s much harder to duff a shot using those clubs then the higher lofted wedges. My number one priority is to get the ball on the green. Close to the flag is a bonus!

Thanks Steve I really like your philosophy there. My order would be putter, then 5 wood then 7 iron and then 9 iron. You are right get it on every time. As you get better you can get the ball closer to the hole. Thanks for watching. Brian

Excellent Brian ... love the start with the heading putting you in prison like the 'lockdown Melbourne' position! ... And I see I can remove several 'w' clubs from the bag ...more seriously I think the length and type of swing and the concept of landing area used for chipping helped me the most ... i.e. in the lounge room for now.

After watching your video, I went out into my backyard and tried to compare the result of using my 52 degree wedge (which you sold me) and my 7 iron. The 7 iron worked well and I think I will use it especially when the grass around the green is longish. Problem is trying to estimate the back swing. Next problem is where to paint the orange box on the green, let alone trying to find a tin of orange paint on a golf course.

Good video Brian. If you are in longer grass by the green (an inch or two perhaps) but with no obstacle in the way to get to the pin would you then chip with a sand wedge? Regards David PS. Are you still doing swing analysis videos like you were in lockdown?
@fitzygolfpro
@fitzygolfpro 3 жыл бұрын
Good question David. The answer is slightly complex as it depends. If there is plenty of green to work with probably not. If there isn’t much green to work with probably. When it comes out of the rough it will roll more than usual. I will be doing this shot in the next few weeks so stay tuned. In answer to your PS. We are still in lock down here in Melbourne. I have my membership program where there are 3 levels of membership where you can get your swing reviewed. Fitzy, All my clubs r hybrids inc 9 thru wedge. I carry a sand wedge for shots close to green and need loft. any suggestions about usage of 9 thru sw with hybrids. They r good 4 chip and runs and pitch shots
@fitzygolfpro
@fitzygolfpro 3 жыл бұрын
I love that you have those George. I think that is a great mix. The trick with those shorter lofted hybrids is to keep your angle of attack shallow. Hybrids have wider soles so if you hit behind the ball the club will tend to bounce a bit and tend to make good contact difficult. You may find yourself hitting slightly thin shots or even some topped shots as well.. I hope that helps. Brian

Good video Brian. I think I am can improve on the tempo, sometimes backswing too slow or too long, or downswing too slow ("thinking" about not wanting to hit it too far). With the stroke itself, I am using my putting swing, but I am not sure this is correct, as you seem to have more body rotation than I do, and I would not do that for putting.
@fitzygolfpro
@fitzygolfpro 3 жыл бұрын
You are on the right track with that mike. Chipping is a putting swing. The longer the swing is the more the body will move. Tempo is great to work on. You could also use a metronome to assist you. Keep at it we will be back soon. Brian

Great content Brian once again. In all honesty i very seldom use 9 iron or less when chipping. I just don't practice it enough and lack confidence . I usually use my gap or PW and close the face for.less loft. Anxious to practice with 8 iron or less on practice green before my next round. Can i commit to it on course? I will definitely blame you if it doesn't work ...... lol

Good stuff Dean. I have a thick skin, It's known as Bloody Brian syndrome..... It will work fine. Just pay particular attention to your landing area. It should be closer to you than when you are using your gap or pw. Have a good weekend. Brian

Nothing beats practising your chipping when it comes to improving your score. Its fun when you can see your improvement and confidence growing. I’m not talking about warm up chipping ‘practice’ either. The trick is making a habit of the practice.

Whenever you show a chip shot, you are dealing with a green on the same level as the fairway. But most of the courses I play at have more complicated geography; either they are elevated or at the bottom of a valley. I am curious as to whether all your suggestions would work in such conditions.
