Fans of actress and singer Chiquis Rivera and her legendary mother, Mexican singer Jenni Rivera, likely imagine a magnificent life behind the scenes for the Rivera family, but reality proved otherwise for many years.
In her new book, 'Forgiveness,' Chiquis Rivera, the oldest daughter of Jenni Rivera, reveals disturbing details of sexual abuse at the hands of her father.
"It started at age 8 and it stopped at 12. He ran for 10 years. Eventually, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison with no chance of parole," said Rivera.
Rivera no longer speaks to her father despite having reached out to him repeatedly.
"I wrote him letters, but he never wanted to talk to me. He's never asked me for forgiveness. He's always accused me of being a liar, but there is so much evidence. Now that my mom has passed, I don't feel the need to have a relationship with him, but I've forgiven him," said Rivera.
In 2013, Jenni Rivera's death in a plane crash came as a shock to fans around the world. For her daughter, the deep grief that ensued was made worse by the fact the two did not speak to each other in the months leading up to that fateful day.
"We weren't speaking for about two months before she died (because she accused me) of sleeping with her husband," said Rivera.
The popular Latin star blames "the toxic voices around" her mother. In her book, 'Forgiveness,' Rivera hopes to set the record straight.
"To me, it's next to killing someone one. It's horrible. My dignity as a woman--I think it did affect me in many ways… it was very difficult," said Rivera.
But years of pain and emotional suffering, has brought Rivera to a new place.
"Talk about things and leave it in the past. That's what I talk about in the book. The most important thing is to pull something positive out of every situation. I'm going to try and help other people," said Rivera.
