If you turn the foam roller the other way, you can use it for your upper back. Lie on the foam roller following your spine.

Yes, that's true. Lying long-ways on the foam roller is a good way to stretch your chest muscles. You can't really roll much that way, but stretching your chest muscles can be good for upper back pain.
