Funnily enough I can see how this ship totally works in the context of the story. Scarlett is supposed to be the "canon" childhood love interest, but she gets kidnapped right off the boat. So until you rescue Scarlett or recruit another female character you're likely going to be putting Chloe with Alain if you want to start romancing someone right away. In my play through at least I didn't get another female character until several missions in. And since one of Chloe's major hang ups is feeling unworthy of Alain compared to other girls, this would in universe be the perfect time for them to get closer.

Seeing as Alain and Chloe’s first rapport happens like…. 5 feet away from the dock entering Cornia… yeah. Chloe (inadvertently) got her hooks in Alain super early.

I apologize in advance for the wall of text. I mean what I said, Chloe is, to me, a better option for Alain. The reasoning is that Scarlett is really the "designated love interest" of the game, and as such, she gets pushed toward Alain more. The problem with that stems from the fact that fair few of her rapports, though mainly with the girls who are most forward with their attraction toward Alain, like the elf sisters, are about how she loves him instead of focusing on anything else. That, in addition to her rapports with Alain himself kind of being all over the place in terms of pacing and consistency, makes it harder to root for her or actually want Alain to be with her. I also tend to dislike the "main girl" in games that give you options like this one. As for Chloe, she doesn't get pushed with Alain as much if at all, and only really implies being in love with him in a few of her rapports rather than the main story, and even then, it usually isn't the main topic of them. Her rapports with Alain also follow a distinct plot that develops their relationship in such a way that a romance would be believable, I feel. Plenty of her rapports are her helping people and giving/getting useful advice. She inspires and helps a fair number of characters both in their recruitment chapters and subsequent rapports. As someone on the UO subreddit put it, though I am paraphrasing a bit, it's like she's learning how to be the best queen like Alain is learning to be king, even if she doesn't realize it. I also tend to root for these kinds of characters in theses kinds of games, y'know, the romantic underdogs. I usually find it's much more interesting doing that. Also she's the only one to explicitly have children with Alain, even if children are a given for most of the romantic endings. @@azurekite3870

@@dash327Agree 100%. Scarlett being a little jealous would have been one thing, but it comes up so often. Scarlett thinks she’s owed Alain. It leads to awkward chemistry and a character arc that goes nowhere. Chloe on the other hand is the backbone of the army. She’s kind, helpful, and proves that she cares about people outside of her own social bubble (i.e. her relationship with Ridiel). She’s also stern when needed and isn’t afraid to challenge Alain when she thinks it’s necessary. Also, looking back, Alain always showed compassion towards Chloe. When Scarlett gets kidnapped, Alain cries out Chloe’s name first when Chloe gets knocked down despite Scarlett being surrounded by troops. Also, there’s the blizzard battle where Alain personally apologizes to Chloe for taking too long when it’s so cold out. Also, this may be just my own personal experiences talking, but it’s so disrespectful to not romance someone just because you ship your friend with the other person. It’s objectifying to the potential partner and insulting to your friend that they can’t handle competition. Sorry Lex, but you should have taken notes. Edit: Went back to finish rapports. Lex and Chloe never get together anyway. Purely platonic relationship. So, yeah. Chloe by far best choice for maiden imo.

It’s the ONLY ending with a child. I’m half convinced that Chloe is meant to be the canon choice, especially when Scarlett calls the player out for making a convenient choice during Scarlett’s proposal scene.

@@Viewtifulyoshi It's the only ending where kids are mentioned. Kind of like Nenji/Tomi's and Shu/Yuki's epilogue dialog in 13 sentinels. If we base things on dialogue during the Ring Givings, then there's enough subtext for Yunifi wanting a football team's worth of kids and implications for a couple of others. As an aside, Chloe having the epilogue about them having a daughter works. BOTH Scarlett and Chloe were Childhood Friend material, but Scarlett has the Shonen Protagonist's Love Interest written all over her character, while Chloe comes off as either the Best Friend's Love interest or the childhood friend ultimately passed aside for designated SP match (See Nisekoi). A lot of Childhood Friend type girls in these manga, who either get passed over or killed off initially, are favorites of the fans of said manga, so it makes sense you see that kind of DNA in Chloe.

I thought so too at the beginning, but I think it’s made pretty clear that Lex simply doesn’t see Chloe that way, especially by their A rank rapport. Chloe at least seems to humor the idea, but Lex drops all romantic pretense outside of one time he was buttering Chloe up to get food. At least with Monica and Clive, they are actively working on their relationship in their rapports. Lex showed way more interest in Sharon than Chloe. Plus, Lex and Chloe don’t even live remotely close together no matter the ending anyway. I think it was a dev red herring.
