well the dude is made with super cells (jenova cells) that can regen fast, etc. The wound does take its toll however, as in final fantasy 7 when you find sephiroth's body encased in mako at the crater it's missing its lower half (no legs).

You know Clouds body rejected Mako hence he was never deemed fit for soldier at this point, only after the events he was injected with Jenova cell's and gained strong traits, he managed to lift Sephiroth with pure will something Sephiroth never had at that point. Put it this way you would be angry and the shear adrenaline boost would course through your veins so that could possibly helped over come the odds and this is what may have happened and how Cloud managed to toss Sephiroth off the edge

And here's me wondering how the fck did Cloud ever fail the initial tests for entering SOLDIER if he could pull this kinda stuff off without even Mako enhancements, lifting that Buster Sword one handed and leaping that kind of height with it, actually hurling Sephiroth in a direct contest of strength...... When the average 3rd Class pretty much bites it with a love tap, and even Zack stumbled and struggled to carry the Buster Sword first time he held it, how the hell did Cloud fail entering the unit if he had this kind of strength?

TheDumbRock In his defence, Sephiroth was a relatively decent and sane guy until the Nibelheim Incident and what he discovered down in the basement broke him. (calm, didn't take offence at accidental disrespect, was mindful of his subordinates health, was willing to go against orders to do the right thing and had a strangely cynical sense of humour, nothing in Crisis Core indicated he had problems early on except how unnerved he was the first time he and Zack found one of Genesis's places and saw the machines there)

It's because Cloud is supposed to be someone that has the potential to have great strength and endurance when he has the drive to see things through, but was held back because of how little he thought of himself all those years ago. The whole adventure in the original game is him unwittingly gaining that determination and realizing his potential, climaxing with him utterly owning Sephiroth in that weird mindscape he was pulled into. Then Advent Children gives him alien cancer and undoes everything...

vc180191 there are fan theories that have been floating around for decades about this scene. One in particular I always found intriguing was the idea that Cloud had some natural superhuman abilities from birth...this being because Cloud was the planets "plan A" to stopping Jenova and the future calamity. But, when Cloud was fused with Jenovas cells and went mental this plan failed...and the Weapons became the planets more intensive strategy. Cloud was more of a passive plan that failed but then actually worked in the end.

It was meant to illustrate Cloud's will being stronger than Sephiroth's, not that Cloud could actually pull off what he did. Or so, that's what I read.

Hmm, Sephiroth in japanese version he seems to be more expressive not only in his words but through his voice too. I like how in the cutscene when Sephiroth stabs Cloud he says in with furious voice almost like a scream "Don't get over confident" (and is normal because he's doing a lot of effort to stay on his feet after being stabbed by the buster sword) But in the english dub, Sephiroth says "Don't test me" but his voice sounds more silent but still menacing. Sephiroth in the english dub goes more through the silent anger.

@FoftheCs Sephiroth's appearance in the original game is Sephiroth's will controlling Jenova's body as though it was an extension of his own, shapeshifting it (Jenova's main trait) into his own visage. Cloud is 16 years old during this. Cloud survives because Hojo scoops him and Zack up (Zangan took Tifa away before Shin-Ra caught her) and injects them with Sephiroth cells, for his Jenova Reunion Theory. Cloud and Zack don't die, though they are watched for 5 years until Zack breaks them out.

You do realize you can always watch the anime version of this section of the game, its like 10 minutes longer and includes blood, and it ends a little bit differently by the fact that cloud his held off the side, pulls himself back to safe ground and just spins the sword around to toss sephiroth off, by throwing off his balance.

Sephiroth's mother was Lucretcia and if you saw her in some of the Dirge of Cereberus cut scenes you'd see where he got his hair. Jenova didn't even have human form when it first came to the planet, it adopted that form later to be able to move through the population. That's at least the way I understand it.

Seriously Zack wasn't even as injured as Cloud was. Cloud got stabbed and thrown. Zack merely got pushed back and hit the stairwell which I get hurts and can leave you weak for awhile but not to the point of immobility. I'm not sure if Zack took more damage than we thought he did or if he was just dreadfully exhausted from battling the worlds most feared 1st Class SOLDIER.I honestly prefer Zack to Cloud and wish he could've had more of the spotlight in this scene or at least a more convincing defeat.

The entire Niebelhim incident was always Cloud's moment since FF7. Sephiroth the man who he admired and always looked up to had turned evil, destroyed his home town, hurt Zack and Tifa, and he saw him kill his own mother. Zack couldn't defeat Sephiroth because he was superior in every way. The same applied to Cloud but his will, determination and hate for Sephiroth allowed him to overcome that major obstacle and kill Sephiroth. Cloud always overcomes obstacles that are above him because of his will and determination. And thats what his character stands for and why "Limits are meant to be broken" is his catch phrase. Because his character is about breaking ones limits.

Giving some of the glory to Zack would be fanfic-y and overindulgent, going against how things turned out in the original game. CC already undid his pitiful demise and made it some grand, over the top, heroic sacrifice (which is really screwed up, given how the whole theme of the original title was the fragility of life and how quickly it could end unceremoniously). Pushing it and actually trying to put the spotlight on Zack in what is one of Cloud's biggest moments in the original game would be going waaaaaaaaaaaay overboard.

While I do agree with the others that this is Cloud's time to shine, this game doesn't show wounds or blood. For all we know, during the battle, Zack could've been cut up very badly and had been disoriented from blood loss. That could be the explanation you're looking for.

Sephiroth was attempting to exit and passed Cloud in the original but as Cloud chased Sephiroth over the reactor bridge, he was stabbed over that bridge, and not in the room, but I still prefer this over the damn Last Order crap.

Hojo was experimenting the reunion theory with jenova cells and infected other people with them, those people who are infected jenova can control, and turn them into sephiroths image. And sephiroth didnt actually die here, he got threw into the mako/lifestream in the reactor, and over the course of 7 years he learned knowledge about the ancients and meteor while being in the lifestream.

Plus he probably had a lot of blood loss due to being stabbed with the Buster Sword, and all kinds of other internal damage that would kill just about any unenhanced human. So even without the shock of meeting someone who could stand up to him he would have been pretty disoriented.

i'll answer a lot of questions people seem to have, sephiroth didn't expect someone to stab him from behind, only someone with honor and courage can wield that blade, cloud was pissed off and running off of emotion alone thats what made him so strong, sephiroth is a superhuman so no stab like that would kill him, cloud got pierced either in the lung (not fatal at first) or above the heart, and sephiroth was hurt so cloud used him as a lever to get on his feet and throw him into the wall.

I totally agree with you. The whole point of Cloud being the hero of the story kind of goes with the whole theme of FF7--normal, humble, 'underdog' people can change the world. Cloud was a normal guy who found strength from himself and his friends to protect the planet. It's only when he's trying to play 'hero' in his head that he isn't whole.

While in the womb of Lucrecia (spelling) ...Hojo the father, injected the womb (Sephiroth) with Jenova's genes....THEN he made it into SOLDIER because of the strength that gave him...which also gave him the strength of SOLDIER. Sephiroth was born like any other baby...he was confused however in ShinRa's reports and thought he was created from Jenova cells and thought she was his mother.

Cloud and Zack were best friends. Cloud thought he was the 1st Class SOLDIER that Zack truly was as a result of the Jenova cells/mako infusion that Hojo experimented with on him. He took on Zack's persona but there really was a Zack and Cloud really did grow up with Tifa in Nibelheim - he's not a clone, just a guinea pig.
