I think people forget that the FMCSA requirements are that the WLL of ALL straps or chains used on the load must be at least HALF the weight of the load being secured. For example: a 50k lbs load would only require a total of 5 straps or 6/g70 chains. However; you would need to include linear rules also.

Why do you say that? Are drivers driving around with only half the WLL on their loads? That’s crazy. I recently did a video speaking to that exact point. DOT/FMSCA requirements are minimal. ​@choicemas Some people think that for a 50k pound load, (for example), they count it as 5400 lbs per strap and think they need 10 straps to be "legal", when technically they'd only need 5, (to be legal), and I say "to be legal" because I always run 1 extra than needed. (Not counting for length). 1 G70 chain can hold 13200 lbs of cargo. 1 4 inch strap can hold 10800 lbs of cargo. You got 6 chains @ 13200 each And 2 straps @ 10800. That's technically enough securment for 100,800. Lbs.. (Not counting for length). Length you need 2 securements in the 1st 10 feet (if you dont have a bulkhead), and no more than 10 feet apart. I've seen some crazy sht out there, like some drivers never even looked at the book

Always great content. Quick question, I'm fairly new to flat bed and my trainer told me to always make the teardrops on the chains as small as possible but noticed yours were big. Does it really matter? Or was he blowing smoke

Because the front of the load was staggered significantly. An X Chain system wouldn’t have stopped forward motion. I lent of loads I have in this catalogue I show the X Chain System because it’s practical in regard to the load. Would you X strap 2x4 wooden planks? Not being a smart ass, just using the question as an example.

What up Choice, T from Pittsburgh checkin in. I appreciate the video and info, I'm new to flatbed. Quick question any particular reason why you put the binders on top of the load? I didnt know that was an option since I was told to put them on the side to tighten them when checking the securement for slack.

I did a load of steel recently, where my straps touched the steel on top and the sides, but not on the middle. The middle stuff slid up and stopped at my bulkhead.

That’s the challenge, securing every stack, bundle, skid, pallet, and piece on the load so that those potential catastrophes don’t happen. Thank God for you bulkhead.

I wouldn't feel comfortable either with barely meeting the legal requirements. I mean, to me it's all about peace of mind... You can never over secure. But at the end of the day, you gotta be good with what YOU do. Maybe that's just how I was taught (at a certain company in Des Moines, IA).. Nice video, bro. Making it happen.

I’m with you Jo. Apparently my math was wrong on his securement. (I’ll have to check that again.) Either way, myself personally, couldn’t have pulled off with only 6 5/16 chains. That’s just me though.

Noted, and thank you for the tip. I’m not sure if what you’re talking about when you say that “little lip” or the “weakest part of the chain.” All the hooks were hooked to the chain itself in this video. Please explain. Everything I’ve learned I’ve learned from others, so I don’t have any issues being corrected, advised, taught, etc. God bless.

@@choicemas Each chain link is a short piece of steel with the ends bent to face each other. Those ends are tied together with a band (I used the wrong terminology). Structurally, that's the weakest point on the chain. When you constantly hook there, it accelerates the deformity of the link to the point of breakage. A link that is too deformed is no different than a strap with a hole or cut in it to the DOT. The chain can still be used, but the deformed link must be in the excess. Not within the part of the chain that is used to secure the load. Hopefully that clears thing up.

@@solitary_con4128 appreciate this... mechanically I can understand what you explaining. What I’m having trouble understanding is the “hook” when hooked to the chain “link” it bites the entire link. Let’s just say the hook didn’t cover/grab the entire link, when I put torque on it and tighten the chain the hook would shift anyway, no? In regard to deformed links, I am aware of that, but none of my links were deformed. I’ve done a good share of welding and understand what a link is and how it’s made. BELIEVE me I’m not trying to be difficult, I’m trying to fully understand how it is, that I might be hooking my hooks onto the weak link or weak part of a link. This way I can pass the information on to others.

4700 WLL for 5/16 G7 but the math is easier at 4500 :). How in the world would you build a bulkhead to stop forward movement on such a heavy load? For securement with no bulkhead, you add one more chain to the one chain per ten feet formula?

Get a long rope tie a lug lut to one end tape up where you tied the rope put enough tape to where the hook on the chain fits tight around the tape and use the rope throw it over the load hook your chains up and drag it over the load..... save your back and falling off the trailer 🤘🤙

No more dunnage to build a bulkhead. Also the load was high and staggered. Bulkhead would help but wouldn’t stop the entire load. Belly wrap wouldn’t hurt but it would be useless on the front end of this load. Not sure you saw what the front of the load looked like.

I'm a Aussie and I would chain down completely different but you need more chains to do it I run two chains under the steel first and hook one on each side then over the top and hook up to the same side you started at then tighten them both down this way you are pulling the whole load together and down a lot less chance of the steel ending up in a cab with you when some idiot makes you brake hard
