Happiness through consumption. Create demand through propaganda, sell things to meet that demand. Ramp the process up as hard as possible so that people are so inundated with material desires, that fulfilling those desires becomes all consuming as they can never be fulfilled. There is always new stuff that the propaganda tells you that you need.
@Dman9fp4 жыл бұрын
Yep, if mass consumption truly made you happier, we'd notice developed countries have super happy people and "less developed/ 3rd world/slum" (or whatever you call them) nations would be super unhappy. That's not the case at all, and perhaps the opposite

Watch the Century of the Self documentary by Adam Curtis and the BBC. It focuses a lot on Bernays but also how this stuff applies to politics. It covers the Anschluss and talks about Nazis using propaganda and crowd psychology. Incidentally, Chomsky says Nazis used US corporate advertising techniques. Also their generals had attended US sporting matches and noted the frenzy the crowd got into. Anyhow the Century of the Self concludes that Americans are much more easily controlled when they pursue their happiness through consumption.

The opening of his book (no, not Chomsky): "The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized. Our invisible governors are, in many cases, unaware of the identity of their fellow members in the inner cabinet."

What a great demagogue is Chomsky. As always he speaks softly and lengthily, and sprinkles around many interesting facts, but somewhere in the middle he drops a baseless accusation which portrays his opponent as a villain: "He (Bernays) turned women into smokers". As if Bernays deliberately exposed women to lung cancer. Chomsky omits the fact that nothing we know today of cigarettes was known a hundred years ago. At the same time he fails to give Bernays even the tiniest credit for supporting women's fight for equal rights. Smoking in public - orchestrated by Bernays - was one more step, some even say a significant one , in their long struggle for personal freedom.

@@Trueace21005 oh, the "real research" argument. I understand you've never read "The anti-chomsky reader". Please refer to where Bernays "told" his wife to "not smoke". Doris E.
