Searle's position - that the mental is the neurophysiological at a higher level - is too dogmatic for Chomsky because Chomsky wants syntax to be a property of matter

Hi there im a huge fan of your channel. Have you ever considered turning these videos to audio format and making them into a podcast? I was thinking of doing it myself if no one else was going to

There are 9 videos on “The Cognitive Revolution” from Spain: kzbin.infosearch?query=chomsky+cognitive+revolution
@michaeldebellis42026 жыл бұрын
This is from a complete series of lectures that Chomsky gave, I think at some Spanish university. Unfortunately he had a cold most of the time as you may hear in his voice but he was still awesome! The entire series is on KZbin, I think there is a link in the description up at the top that says source that will take you to one of the complete lectures and from there you can find earlier and later ones. I've watched all of them, they are about 3-5 hours all together and well worth it!

anything biological [ie not merely "physical"] has an inherent mental potential -- by virtue of being living.

I wonder if the brain encrypts the information it is processing? IF that were true, it would explain the difficulty in mapping mental processes to their underlying physical correlates. We’d look at brain activity and just see noise, in the same way as you would just find noise if you hooked an Ethernet cable up to a speaker. The information has to be decoded before the content can be read and the relationship between the mental and the physical understood.
@justgivemethetruth6 жыл бұрын
That is exactly what they are doing. It is not really encryption in the sense that you want to hide data, but it is more encoding ... how is information transmitted and understood within the brain.

could it be Francisco Varela on the question side?
@FThomist Жыл бұрын
Interesting! Why do you think so?
@yuriarin3237 Жыл бұрын
@@FThomist I guess I thought so because of the accent and hair ( A.I. Lab 1997 Lecture Series: Francisco Varela - God & Computers: Minds, Machines, and Metaphysics is a lecture on YT with Varela talking), but now that I see it again I hear a typical Spaniard cadence, so I don't see it probable that he is Varela
@FThomist Жыл бұрын
@@yuriarin3237 Taking this in account, I think Chomsky misreads the intent behind the question. Maybe the questioner's intent was more driven by the idea that Mind/Consciousness could be a (emerging?) property of biological cells. Just like Chomsky entertains in his third option.

@@yuriarin3237 Thanks also for pointing out that lecture. I recently started reading Embodied Mind again and this lecture could assist a deepening understanding of his ideas.
