In the UK it's pretty traditional for the couple to pay for the bridesmaids' dresses - is that not the case in Canada? Rental dresses definitely makes sense!

Elena Bjørn In the US it depends on the bride and groom, some pay for the dresses and others have the bridesmaid's pay for their own. I'd say more people pay for their own now though.

In canada it is the norm for the bridesmaids and groomsmen to pay for their own outfits, shoes, accessories and hair/make up!

I think renting is an excellent idea although in the majority of European countries the bride pays for bridesmaid dresses , shoes and accessories

Debbie Vidal oh really? I don't think that's usually how it is in the US. I'm in a wedding and we have to pay for everything ourselves but the bride usually gives the jewelry as a gift or just a bridesmaid gift in general like a robe or candle or something

Debbie is right, I believe in the biggest part of Europe, the bride pays the outfits. Seems crazy expensive in my opinion. But the thing is: brides often have kids as bridesmaids instead of friends. so that cuts down on the cost a little bit tho :p

I thought the majority of European countries do not have bridemaids. I've only heard of this tradition in UK, norway and netherlands. We don't have it in Spain, so the bride doesnt pay for any of it.

In the Netherlands it is very uncommon to have adults as bridesmaids, sometimes there are little kids as bridesmaids though (and clearly they don't have to pay themselves...)

My friend tried to make it easier on us bridesmaids for her wedding and let us pick our own dresses. The only specification was that it be a forest green chiffon dress. We thought it'd be easy but as it turns out that color fabric is hard to find. Shopping for bridesmaid dresses became a chore instead of the fun exciting event we thought it'd be 😭

Amen to it being expensive! I'm the maid of honour for my best friend's wedding in July and between the bridal shower, bachelorette party, and dress I'm gonna be broke! Lol. The dress was $250, the shoes $50, jewellery $30, hair is going to be $100, and makeup will be $60 😭

it's awesome that you can rent the dresses.they all looked so pretty...back in the day when I was in Quincera's- elaborate15th birthday parties (big puffy-4ring hoop underneath the dress/ballroom style dresses) I had 7 in my closet which took up all the space.that didn't include hairpieces and a fan or umbrella or some type of prop that we use for the main dance

And another tip for braid's maids dresses (if you do not have access to a rental shop). Give them color that you would like and have them choose their dresses (after all they know what looks good on their body). I had mine wearing black, they looked so classic :)
