Hi, Danielle - Thank you SO MUCH for making these videos! I am an intermediate woodworking who wants to add a scroll saw to my shop for various projects. Your channel has been very helpful in deciding what to get, how to start, and especially this video on blade selection. I really appreciate this very much. Today I purchased a Bauer 22" scroll saw from Harbor Freight. I wanted to get a DeWalt 788 but price was a problem and I was warned away from the very cheap saws. This Bauer one is new but already getting good user reviews and it seems like a Pegus knockoff that should perform decent without breaking the bank. Your video really helped me choose the blades and I just used your link and discount code to pick some up for Bare Woods. I'm now subbed to your channel and looking forward to many more great tips from your videos (new and old). I'm very grateful to have your channel here for the rest of us to learn from you. I'm still new to scrolling, but I agree with using mostly modified geometry blades. The first time I used one I couldn't believe how smooth the finish was when done.

Don't worry about the blade. Focus on control of the piece and you can use any blade mentioned. If you can't get into the zen of scroll sawing it might not be the craft for you. Reverse blades for straight cuts and spiral blades for curvy cuts. That's all you need to know. Again it's all about control. You can ride a line with a spiral blade if you concentrate on it.

When choosing a blade, you state use a #3, #5 or #7. Some of the manufacturers list them as 10 TPI or 28TPI. So some do not list them as #3, #5 etc. Which blades that state TPI would you suggest for beginner scroll saw projects?

I love going to Amazon to find some blades and they don't tell you the blade # size. Just love it!

Thanks! I have a question. Can a scroll saw use either a pinned or no pin blade? Mine came with a pin blade but i need to do tiny holes so wondering if a no pin blade can be attached to the saw somehow?

They can usually take both, but often the vibration on machines that only take pinned blades can be enough to cause it to slip out a lot. If you lived by me I’d try and help you troubleshoot :). Unfortunately I don’t have experience with a lot of the models. Best of luck!

Thanks for tips. You suggest starting with a #5 which is 14 TPI. I looked on Lowe's website and blades described as, "Bosch 4-Pack 5-in Pinned High Speed Steel Scroll Saw Blade" No number or TPI mentioned. I searched elsewhere and I cannot find #5 or 14 tpi. All I am finding is 10, 15, 18 & 24 tpi blades.

Good video. One can use a 16 mm melamine board on top of the metal base. This can give the blade, twice the life. 😊

Well after my 1st week returning to the Hobby (DEWALT 788), I've tried name signs and 3d Intarsia>>>>>>>> well I'm shocked at the LONG learning curve ahead of me!! At 76yo, I sometimes fell I'll die of old age before I reach and acceptable level of Skill. I do try to get some scrolling done each day!! I've seen a font on Etsy, I've tried to find on the Net with no success: rounded tops/bottoms and letters are touching. I reached out the seller with no success 😢

No way, I bet you’re doing better than you give yourself credit for! I bet you’ll improve fast! If you can use Canva.com and chose a free font, it allows you to decrease the letter spacing and you can move them until they’re touching! I’ll have to do a Canva tutorial sometime!

You can go up to #12 blades, but I also find that for a same #, they seem smaller than and styles. I mostly use Pegas blades, they suit me well.
