Although this was put forward as a bit of a mathematical trick and basically telling you it's not possible as an individual to go and do this, Derren has kind of hit the nail on the head in terms of how to actually win long term betting on horses. Of course you also need to be taking bets that are priced bigger than they should be which requires a bit of studying the markets, betting at high volume is how you even out the variance that you can't win every time and to even out a little bit the "house edge" that the bookmakers have over a punter. I'm sure he's not oblivious to this fact either. Over a large enough sample size, if you take bets that are good value you will ultimately win enough to make a profit.
