Choosing your BEST lipstick shades (It's all in the small details!)

Ever struggled with choosing lipstick shades for your skin tone? Here's how I would choose lipstick shades based on my skin tone and dominant traits!
Lipstick shades used in the video (I tried my best to remember but they may not be the exact shades!):
1. MAC Viva Glam Gaga I (light cool pink)
2. MAC Nippon (brighter coral)
3. MAC Lovelorn (medium pink)
4. darker pink - I really can't remember this one but it's quite similar to MAC Fanfare or MAC Brave
5. Anna Sui Lip Rouge G400 (glossy light red)
6. MAC Ruby Woo (matte bright red)
7. MAC Dare You (darker brick red)
8. Anna Sui Lip Crayon 700 (beige nude)

Great advice. Thank you for putting your lips through this for us 😂 It is quite a process finding the right shade of lipstick. I've spent more money that I needed to in trying to find the right shade, so now I do what you said at the end of the video; I mix and match lipsticks. That truly works.

As weird as this may sound, that "match the shade to your nipple color" trick worked wonders for me, so I don't keep buying lip colors that look bad on me.

It’s an interesting idea, but for me it’s not working 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m very light, almost fair but THIS color is too pale for me 😅

@@VanCrane same thing happened to me, because THAT color looks much darker than you'd expect looking at my super fair complexion. What I did was try pumped up and muted versions of IT 🙃. Here's a tip, I know it's weird. Take a photo of it and blow it up and see what colors it's composed of, like brown, pink and red (in my case) and try those. For lip colors I know a shade iis right when it blends into the shade of the inside of my lip.

Nude lips are so tricky! I feel like everything is too warm and beigey. I've pretty much given up on nude and use a dusty rose as my "nude" instead (I guess that would be my MLBB shade🤷‍♀️). Although, red is still my go to color.

Same! I think that is a common issue for winter seasons. I'm a bright winter, so the rose can't be too dusty. I wear a midtone rosy pink and it looks like MLBB shade on me.

Same! I’ve 100% given up on nude. Though watching this does make me realize that a ‘warm rose’ color I use sometimes and wonder how I get away with it is probably playing the part of a nude for me.

Your videos are magic! I can relate to them so often! ❤ Choosing darker shade than you'd initially think for the olive is so true! I'm a very fair olive, but it has always been the case for me. I donated a number of nice mac lipsticks to my sister because of how many times I used to buy them only to discover the shade was too pale on me. Same colors on my bestie (fair but non olive) look dramatic and even too dark. I wish I realized this thing earlier and only purchased deep colors. Aslo, red shades tend to look more cool on me than expected. Probably because my lips are kinda blue-ish. Basically true red turns into raspberry so I have to opt into brick red to balance out this effect. Once I ordered Maybelline 'pioneer' and it looked almost magenta on my lips xd Maybe I shoud try to apply a foundation first to conceal the natural lips color? And the closest to 'nude' that works for me is Mac's 'over the taupe', which is decently dark.

That's me. Traditional nudes wash me out, I look ill. I have very fair olive skin, but regardless of that I have to pick darker slightly muted shades as nudes. Those are the ones that look natural on me

This is SO helpful. Love seeing all the examples! I am very fair with neutral/warm, kind of desaturated skin. Not olive but I really relate to the need for softer (and in my case more desaturated) lipsticks, as well as neutral warm/neutral/cool lips. I often adjust the color with a lipliner. I also cannot with light beige lips - they look like a bandaid on me…for folks who need a softer lip, merit satin lipsticks have a great shade range and can be blotted down for a more desaturated look.

In the light lipstick is very,very easy to see that makes you look sickly,pale,lifeless, well,the coral is a little better than the light cool pink. Waw,6:02 the diference between a "ok" vs "great" lip color is big!! In the ok volor,nothing is happening,but in the great color,gives a similar brows effect,like is framing your face better and you look more healthy and more yourself 😮. 6:54 that first red that you pick,is my favorite texture/formula is fresh and light, while matte is very hard on me,I just use matte for dramatic makeup 😅. 8:35 the red fits u soo much better than the bright red❤ The last tip is very usefull but where I live most lipstick are cool toned,I never seen a an orange lipstick color,the closest was an warm red😢.

my forehead is yellow and lighter and my cheeks are pink and then darker yellow/beige near my jawline, it's the worst lol. I just make my cheeks more nude, cause I don't wanna put blush on my forehead 😂 but my forehead remains lighter and I hate it. I don't feel comfortable putting bronzer or whatever on my forehead, I don't know what shade to buy and I don't have the time before work. I also don't want to put something very light on lower 2/3 of my face. I look better with tan. 😐

Jenn, could you do a video on when your color anaylsis doesn't match your essence/features and how to do your makeup? I believe I am a bright spring with olive skin, kibbe dramatic, and I have a very mature look to me (kitchner dramatic, ethereal, and maybe some gamine?). My problem is..my skin is cool toned but i'm a redhead so my hair is warm toned. Often times cool toned lipsticks suit my skin but clash with the color of my hair, like something is off. But when the lipstick is warmer it doesn't go well with my skin ...arrghh the struggle is real 😂😭

Hi there i noticed that you are a Autum seasonal colour but you prefer to go for more soft Autum shades. I do think that you lean more towards Dark Autum or even True Autum shades but NOT theSoft Autum Shades,ive alao noticed that bloned does'nt look typically good on you it makes you look tired and washed out,if you were a Soft Autum you would nail the blonde i truely think you could be a Dark Autum or True Autum darker colours seem to look more natural on you then lighter shades i would advice u to stay away from the more muted tones (SOFT AUTUM) and try out the other two with i mentioned, Stay with the dark hair it looks great !

I’m the same with choosing a darker lip colour than I think I need. I have really pale skin yet somehow pale colours don’t suit me at all. It seems I have more strength in my colouring than would first appear.

Dependendo da cor, certas texturas ficam melhores do que outras! MLBB fica melhor com textura cremosa, já os anos 1960 ficam melhor com um gloss por cima, os tons vivos e escuros ficam melhor acetinados ou mate. Pelo menos é assim no meu caso! E misturo cores, sim senhor!

When I started looking at lip stick colors in Thailand, I noticed that practically all of them were some kind of shade of red. Very different lineup to back home in Scandinavia. So I think the marketing people at Boots (where I checked first) had determined those colors would sell the best.

Thank you for going through all that pain! I noticed that pinks do look more bright on me. I look at them closely in store before settling in, come home, try it and be disappointed on how bright and usually very cool they look on me. Im looking for MLBB shade too. The perfect pink. Maybe it's because I have naturally very pigmented lips. But I noticed that putting a very beige lip liner helps with blanking the color so lipstick looks better on me. And I also love layering different shades!

Another tip I have is to have a few muted/brownish and/or mauvey lipliners at hand. I have a few lipsticks that on their own are too bright or light and it really makes a difference to create contrast between the outer parts of your lips vs skin. I would still never wear those lighter nudes but you can manipulate the appearance or a color well so you get more use out of your lipsticks that seem to look on top of your lips.

I always (ALWAYS) have such a hard time with finding a decent enough lipstick for my weird coloring. Never in my entire 44 years of life - have I been able to find a shade or lipstick color that even remotely looks OK on me. I usually just forgo it all together and will instead opt for a pinkish tinged clear gloss. This video could be an absolute game changer for me.
