Shaman is really good this expansion. Ele is absolutely clapping in pvp and resto is a top 2 raid healer. With the nerfs to dungeon loot, raid classes will be slightly more important imho

I like the approach of looking at what role you want to play the most with that character and keeping the covenant in mind. That mentality really simplifies the decision making for me. I think I can play a hybrid class with a focus on one spec more than others.

I always level up my DK first simply because I enjoy their lore and aesthetics. My main choice for a new expansion is what I want as a main-alt, which usually ends up being whatever I think is just fun to play regardless of their current power.

First off, great video. Subbed. I have some detailed thoughts on why i LIKE hard locking covenants. I think Kevin Jordan (an original vanilla-wotlk wow dev resposible for class design spells and abilities) said it best: Hard Locking covenants is the best option. it brings urgency, and uniqueness back into the game. it bring back true flavor and niches. They already make leveling alts a breeze and in SL, alts will be even easier to hit endgame. with 10+ allied races added recently, and the removal of character caps per server, blizz is finally giving us the best of both classic and modern era wow. that is, We can specialize a character again and have multiple characters with different specs. Spec should mean "specialization" and ever since they added dual spec and then triple, people had an expectation to do everything and anything in all forms of content. People want "balance" and they also want heterogeneity, which are fundamentally at odds with one another. true balance is every ability doing x damage and y healing on the global cooldown. If WoW is to remain an MMO, and not become a full fledged ARPG, then it needs to add that sense of power back to niches. I WANT to be able to make a bad, permanent decision regarding my player power. but im biased, I played ret paladin in vanilla so I am not afraid of playing the meme spec. tl;dr, I would LOVE if a blood DK has four different subclass options, with one being great for raids while another is suboptimal. We need variety in power back, specifically in the form of selecting a niche. I want a power difference in the choices.

Yea, I watched the Kevin Jordan podcast and was pretty interesting especially on dealing with situation without having the perfect tools. So I would lean towards agreeing with him and tbh, for myself, I just wanted to have something simple and not start overthinking everything too much because I will have more fun in the end that way.

The thing is for a lot of classes (like my main shaman) there is one covenant that is ahead on everything, so those niches don't exist for a lot of classes. The idea behind covenants is good, but blizzard has not and probably won't do a good job in balancing them

I am completely incapable of maining things. The fact I can get aotc, keystone challenger and/or arena achievements is only due to the fact I have a friend who bullies me every time I hop to a new class (once every 2-3 days usually XD). I cycle through every class over the course of two months. Really trying to be good this time, but struggling due to covenant powers locking me down. I don’t play to be the most powerful class, I just am fascinated by the gameplay of everything and look at something going “that’s cool I wanna do that for a while”. At the very least I’ve brought my choice down to a few. Rogue (primarily sub), priest (primarily shadow) or monk (primarily windwalker). I like rogue utility, I like the multi speccing and play styles of monk and priest but I feel suffocated by the fact that I like being locked into a covenant for roleplay reasons, for appearances etc but the abilities are all cool and I want to use them all, even if not all at once. Let’s not forget the inevitable (I played feral a lot in bfa, it is defintiely inevitable) “why the fuck are you playing X covenant as X spec? Are you a noob? Are you a troll? Y covenant is best for that spec”

Seems like outside of getting some legendary items farmed you can kind of play whatever you want within reason without hurting your "main". Its honestly probably what I'm most excited for. That and honor vendors. Ill probably have to mains this xpac. One will focus on PvE and the other on PvP.

Here's where I'm at with my main choice. First, I looked at classes that can do at least two roles. There have been expansions where I've played Hunter and things like that, but usually I like to be able to do multiple things, so: Hunter, Mage, Rogue, Warlock are out. I liked healing the last couple of expansions I did, so of the hybrid role classes, ones with healing options are preferable to ones without them. This means that my top picks are: Druid, Shaman, Paladin, Monk, Priest, though I would consider Warrior, Demon Hunter, Death Knight as viable options. Monk seems really complicated, so that's a strike against it. But what's worse is that the only version of Monk I liked was Fistweaving. To do that, I"d have to pick a particular legendary item, pigeonholing me into healer specifically, and a particular kind of healer. So all those resources on covenants and legendaries were all on this subspec of a subspec that was either going to work or it wasn't. Too much of a risk for me. I tried Priest in BFA. Holy bored me, Disc was insanely stressful for not enough pay off. It was advertise that it would be the "dps while healing" spec, like fistweaving I missed from MoP. But it didn't hit that mark well I feel, since you spent too much time babysitting atonement buffs, and often had to resort to shadowmend spam in dungeons. Glimmer Holy Paladins were more on the mark with what I actually wanted a DPS / Healer hybrid to be like, but I had quit the expansion before they came into the fold. Priest is out. Warrior covenant abilities didn't interest me. The most mechanically interesting one was the Necrolord flag and it's on a 3 min CD, and I hate managing super long CD's. The fewer the better. Demon Hunter never really interested me as a class. Seemed too simple. So that leaves Druid, Shaman, Paladin, Death Knight Druid became my top pick because both the covenants and a legendary synergized to make a pretty good hybrid build usable in multiple specs. Necrolord ability puts insects on targets that heal allies, damage enemies, bonus to "over time effects" also on those targets. Conduit makes that even more powerful, and a legendary that makes "over time effects" finish their effects in a much shorter duration. Lots of cool synergy there, I can try a covenant / legendary that gives me room to play in any of the specs, lots of flexibility. Definitely a class I want to try. Paladin is my second favorite. The Kyrian ability works well with glimmer healer if I want to try that, or tank shield build if I want to try that. The major downside to Paladin is that I don't feel the class general legendaries are as mechanically interesting as the Druid's. I'd probably have to get a tank legendary and a healer legendary, which costs lots more resources, to play hybrid as effectively as I'd like. Shaman is my third favorite. I love the Venthyr ability for Shaman since it's very hybrid. It goes well with a healer that does damage or a damage dealer that heals. The class legendary that lets lighting / chain heal be instant cast after casting the other one is really cool and really plays into that hybrid idea. Shaman is only behind Pally since Pally can tank and Shaman can't and Glimmer looks pretty sweet. But it's close. In 4th is the DK. The Nightfae replacement for Death and Decay is cool, and the class wide legendary giving it the extra CC is cool too. It's kind of like the Shaman for me. It does two roles, synergizes in a cool way. In a vacuum it would be a virtual tie. What separates it is that a friend I'm going to play with is already going to main an Unholy DK, so we don't need another in the party. That settles it for me and puts DK behind Shaman. So my priority this expansion is: Necrolord Druid > Kyrian Paladin > Venthyr Shaman > Nightae Death Knight I'm still waiting to hear back from other friends to see if this shakes out differently.

I let go of the "dual" speccs when legion hit, it was too much grind to level up your secondary specc (with alts that is) and i figured i could just keep one specc per character. Not only that but you also have to grind double gear (sense one specc may benefit more from another stat)

Play shaman. I played feral druid and managed the +15 achievement plus raiding easily enough. Yes you’ll get people who listen to the stigma, but ultimately just do good at what you play and you’ll beat 90% of the flavour of the month idiots smashing their faces against the keyboards then thinking you are the reason they can’t top the dps

Shaman is about to be really good though, Enhancement is going to be awesome to bring in a raid or dungeon group because of windfury totem and the spec got overhauled to make it more fun. Resto is going to be a must have healer in raids because of all the awesome totems that can save raids. Elemental is your fun sit back chill and destroy stuff spec, I think it's the easiest shaman spec to play but at the same time is very entertaining. I would play shaman in shadowlands if you like it! I think it's going to be a great one.

I can't pick, so I just play them all hah. My "main" I suppose is probably my first character ever, which was an Orc Warlock. He always gets the first run through a new expansion. Once he gets fairly geared, I'll pull the next alt off the bench. I got all classes at 50 waiting minus rogue...he was close, but didn't quite make it. My play style has changed over the years. I last hardcore raided in ICC, but since then I just dabble in raiding. I enjoy leveling alts and learning all the class specs for the most part these days. Easier to pick up and put down. Great video!

Sounds a lot like what I did. Loved your Mage Guides in Legion! Had a damn blast with Fire Mage/Frost in Legion. Felt watered down to hell so went Rogue in BFA, but quit early on hated that expansion. Feel like I'm going to go Rogue again, as mage is still a worse version of Legion...Love Outlaw though, not sure why people hate that one :). Keep up the great work man!

Ranged DPS / Tank is a rough combo, since I do not want to play Druid, so will basically have to choose two toons.

After much deliberation, I ended up with DK/Hunter The DK offers me a tank spec and 2 DPS specs that I enjoy, now with the added bonus of Frost having some flexibility with 2H and DW builds. DKs also get a kick, a grip interrupt, a stun, AMS, AMZ, and a Battle rez. It basically ticks all my boxes for what I want to do in Shadowlands since I always played a Shaman and did not want to play a caster this Xpac. The Hunter is a safe pick for an alt. I enjoy all 3 specs, Survival being my favorite even if it sucks because it's just a blast to play for me. I have no problem switching to BM even if it's boring or MM which looks interesting in the upcoming xpac.

Started playing healer druid at the very end of Legion and BFA. I love healer spec but well i dont think it reall is the spec for me. Started playing on MoP, SoO times. And played DK in every expansion. You and Hazzed Gaming made me love DK even more than i normally do haha. Probably i will play hunter in shadowlands but who knows, maybe i can try Unholy or Blood DK once again. We'll see. Keep up the good work man. It was really helpfull for me.

Yea for the first time im not touching hybrids. Usually love playing different roles for different content. I would pvp as feral, raid as Resto and do mythic+ as boomkin. For me DK I love but not having limbs for PVP and going fae cause it’s good for all 3 specs is pretty meh

Very good points sir, esp. the problem with covenants choice and hybrid classes! I pick the bm hunter as main. My thought here is that it brings may better survivability at grinding the tower or quests. PvP wise I prefer the rogue but hunter is still good. And finally: I managed to get ALL spirit beasts so far and my collection must stay complete with SL.

Welcome to the shadows. I've played many classes in many expansions, but rogue has been my main since vanilla. I just hope that sub stays relevant dps wise. I like assassination, especially for raiding since, it's simplicity lets you focus on the mechanics, but sub feels very fun right now. The only thing that would make me change is the Kyrian ability being the best. I hate that covenant ability.

Mained rogue for many years. But the removal of talent cloak and dagger made me put my rogue down to rest. A shame I had 100000 kills with it. Cloak and dagger was just too fun to not play rogue. It's sad that not many people played it!

I play for fun and flavor with a RP element. Ardenweald wouldn't be the best druid covenant? I don't care... It suits my RP element, it's fun to press. Maybe Venthir is more optimal for MM+37 or Maldraxxus for raider (i don't know, it's just examples)... but why chosing it if I don't like playing it? I think performance should be set aside a little and people should focus more and fun and RP

I will play a Venthyr Enhancement / Resto Shaman because Soul harvest works with both really good and a Maldraxus Blood / Unholy Dk Because of the Awesome Covenant ability and to push Arena with. These two classes are so fun to me especially Resto shaman and Blood DK these two specs have a insanly high skillcap and can carry big if played perfect

Easy tip for everyone! if you wanna good dps, with literally 0 effort , and what I mean 0 effort it’s that you can use 1 button , move and perform max dps, while missing half of your brain , then choose BM hunter , Demon hunter , destro Lock. The rest is more complex and requires you to know when to use your abilities and when to use cldw. I know it’s easier to play 1,2,3 and move out of shit instead of using your brain to perform less dps but again. Choice is yours and play whatever you want. I could catch my dps with BM hunter in BFA , I couldn’t be better for sure, but I would be right behind him, but survival is a bad ass spec that requires management of everything while BM you have only manage your position if you standing in fire

It sounds to me like you’re overthinking picking a class. Take home: play what feels right and feels the best. If it isn’t there for you, change. It can be at times, unfortunately. Just the way the community is some times... you might not care about the numbers but the community might which does affect your gameplay. I remember in legion playing Shadow Priest, I couldn't get into an m+ group as a pug to save my life, even if i was 20 + ilvls overgeared for it.

I came trying to decide between Hunter, Rogue, DK. I think im going to be playing Blood DK because I dont have any social grp this time around to go with me. Most are enjoying classic or waiting for BC classic (they seem to expect BC classic early next year but I think that a bit fast). The excitement for getting to play naxx in classic is also pretty high. But outside DK im not sure what I want to do. Its going to boil down to which class I enjoy more in pvp this time around since bg grinding and the honor gear vendor is finally back.

After a lot of experimenting, i think i'm dusting off my DK for shadowlands. Was warrior from BC thru Wrath, then hunter up until now. I enjoy both dps specs and want to branch out into tanking, and blood looks fun. Also my transmogs look amazing.

MM hunter, feels like aimed shot hits harder, Kill Shot is back, Binding Shot is baseline, rapid fire does the same damage in less time. in shadowlands, conserving focus will be a concern, but this will smooth out later on with legendaries and other things we get from covenants. 2H frost DK makes me think about back in wrath, hitting like a truck spamming Obliterate

Why do you consider Hunter while dismissing one of its specs but cut warrior because of one of its specs? Warrior has 2 DPS specs and should be considered if you want to play DPS? Same with Shaman, druid etc

Because I said, I believe so, if I'm playing a class that offers a role other than DPS (tank or healer) I want to play that role as well, I love doing that, It's right there and feels wrong when we need tank for a dungeon or whatever and I pretend it doesn't exist. Hence why I went to DPS only specs so I completely remove that choice. I know a lot of people don't play/think like that but hey it's how I function :p. That then leads to the multi-role question. Playing multi-roles in SL is fine like I said, but there's so many borrowed power systems to deal with.... I don't wanna be bothered. Azerite was already enough. DPS only classes, you still have a lot of the same 'issues' with borrowed powers if playing other specs but it's lessened. Not everyone is gonna see it that way of course.

Almost every single problem I hear from everyone about what to main is class spec. How fun and enjoyable is a spec. A spec. Virtually every single class is boiled down to a single spec now because the other 2-3 are trash. Blizzard has completely removed the ability to build your chosen spec and then they threw all, but one spec in each class into the dumpster.

Depends on what type of content you gonna be doing, gameplay wise I really like both,they satisfying, currently enhance numbers are pretty low but very likely to be fine by end of tuning, ww monk in numbers currently are also pretty good.(though they also have some bugs, hopefully fixed soon) Both specs lack some unique usefulness in group environments. But play which ever one you enjoy more if you not concerned about doing super high end content, even then its possible, probably just harder than some other specs in a general sense.

I see so many videos like this from creators giving advice on how to choose your main. This should be the easiest choice you will ever make just choose one you like. Playing a game requires your enjoyment not what your guild wants and if they dont value you because of your spec find another guild.

For some of us Altoholics its extremely hard to settle on 1. Whether that be because everything is fun or nothing is. Last 2 expansions I leveled every class to max and bounced between them. Never got far into end game due to horrible gear from spreading myself thin, but such is life. Sadly these days I simply dont have time to even half hazardously work on multiple classes so for the first time in nearly 6 years I will truly have to settle on 1 main and I'm finding it super hard. Almost to the point I wonder if I should just find another game

It looks like the base UI is elvui and the damage meters is either recount or details I can't tell what little tweaks he added to it though. I have used elvui for almost 10 years now and I really like it alot and always recommend it. But just to mention that elvui takes a while to get it set it up just right for you. But when you get it set up just right it is super easy to just copy it over to all of your alts.

Right away, it's super sad to be writing off multi role classes because of covenant abilities. I feel like it might be an overreaction but so long as they keep the current system in place I understand it. I think the abilities aren't as big as people make them. Soulbinds will be talked about more come release.

Oh, it works fine'ish, on DK currently it's not even an issue Night Fae works great for all, I just don't like the theme of it with DK and I actually really like Covenants themselves so I wanted to be in a covenant that makes sense with the class I'm playing. Outside of that is just slightly annoying to make that decision like say in the Warrior example. I feel like you can't just pick a covenant you like with an ability you like(forgetting numbers) if you want to play multi-roles(for the most part) it's extra hard to find something perfect, so I didn't want to deal with it. DPS only classes can have that same problem but is lessened, especially as rogue, necro ability is good and I also like the theme, if it happens to change due to tuning I have no issue going for other covenant ability because they all work about the same in all specs (except fae with outlaw) and in terms of theme I'm also cool with all of them for rogue like I said in the video. I think I didn't make that clear that my issue wasn't just with the ability choices but the thematic choice attached to it :P Cheers!

@@SelwenG Yeah this system is becoming a pain in the arse very quick. I heard night fae was BiS out the gate but I would usually never touch that covenant. I was very interested in Venthyr but now I'm hearing annoying things about its story and gameplay. Bastion looks boring and Maldraxus is a touch edgy but it may be a choice between those two :/ I'm definitely the type to wait a month after release and let all you blokes work it out amongst yaselves lol. Then I'll pop back in after the patches, nerfs, and tuning

With all the nerfs to m+ why would you even bother to run them. 1 piece of loot? For the entire group? So basically I have a 20% chance of loot at the end of 30mins. So realistically, with the limited time I can play, ii have a high chance of getting fuck all loot for the entire night. Great job Blizzard, incredibly rewarding and engaging system.

My main is all classes. Ill play them all. That's my jam. That's what keeps wow fun and fresh for me. Grinding to get the tip top gear is too painfull these days dedicated raiding and mythic plus is no fun anymore its just a chore. I think maybe ill dabble a little into PVP this time round. Seems way more fun. I want a good story, I want to explore and adventure do lots of crafting play the AH do little transmog and mount farming and that tower stuff. Lots to do. Gear grind no thanks.

I really enjoy the theme of fury warrior but when I look at the legendaries and conduits they don't seem that good to me.and recently I saw the dps logs for castle nathria and fury warriors were one of the bottom ones.you think it's worth playing a spec simply because you find it dumb fun?

Depends on what level of difficulty you play, I think after tuning Fury warriors gonna be good and fine, their's potential there. But if you really find it fun and you have weight the pros and cons go for it! Make sure though that there isn't some other class that you also find fun in terms of gameplay but doesn't have the issues you stated, just in case you don't regret it later.

Fury is on top of arms atm and more fun. Venthyr condemn ability looks cool if you build your talents around it

Fury is always kinda fun :) and most of the time pretty viable so go for it :)
