For those who don’t know what they are looking at: This is an inlet, where boats come in an out from the bay to the ocean or from the ocean to the bay. This narrow spot squeezes the water into a tighter area pushing the water in faster. As high and low tide begin to come in, the water is squeezed even tighter, causing these big rough waves you see which can destroy your boat if you’re not careful. It may not look that bad, but if you lose control of your boat, the water will push you directly into the rocks or capsize your boat.

what's the correct way to pilot your boat through waves like this? Should you try to match the speed of the swells or something?
@SCCreations6 жыл бұрын
If your going with the current, matching speed isn't enough. You must overpower the current to maintain control of the boat. The current / waves coming at you should be taken head on and as slow as you can being carefull not to poke the nose of the boat into the next wave or belly flopping your hull. Stopping is usually not an option. It could be the camera lens / angle, but it seemed some of these boaters were way to close to each other... Includeing the CG.

I have a smaller boat of the one at like 8:40ish, it’s insanely light for its size therefore sucks at handling waves, but going against the waves I put the bow up and plow through it, coming in however I usually surf the wave until it dies down a little then get over it, but I can if it’s not cranking waves too hard put my bow all the way down with the throttle wide open plow thru everything pretty well

I like to tilt the motors up to raise the bow (so it won’t dip under) and stay on the back of the wave and slowly follow it in.
@shingnosis5 жыл бұрын
Just be careful not to be caught off guard by a following wave, a fast following wave can sometimes sneak in under your transom and lift it. Then your bow will typically cut either way going down the wave and you'll end up swamped from behind or capsized to the side. Raised motors and bow up is good but it's safer for most people to travel with good power a bit faster than the waves, and to stay on the power to keep the bow up.

We used to jump off that bridge on out going tide ... look to see that there were no boats coming. Flood tide was no good, would bring into the bay and then there was no way of getting out ... on out going tide, could always swim to the jetty way before the opening
@mynameiswrm4 жыл бұрын
Is it always this bad here? Or just when the tides going out?
@ZipZapPower4 жыл бұрын
mostly it is calm, about 95% of the time.. only "rough" when outgoing tide meets incoming swell with onshore wind. It can be flat calm during a strong outgoing tide without the swell. The current dissipates about 300 yards straight out, and about 50 yards to either side, so even on a choppy day in the inlet, a small boat can hug the side, and be on calm water in under a minute.

Haulover inlet is in Miami, Florida.
@jpoorr99736 жыл бұрын
yes it is. Haulover ain't shitt and this is not even bad. If people are scared of this don't ever try Boynton Beach Inlet when it's really cranking. People have died in that Inlet. A drift boat even rolled there. I remember back in the 80s when my father and I (being a teenager) and a friend of his went out the Boca Inlet in a 15 foot Tri haul with a 55 horsepower Bearcat outboard. I knew we were in trouble when the Hatteras in front of us basically disappeared except for the tower. But we were already committed and you never turn around once you're committed. The first wave we hit I flew from the front of the boat and landed in the back of it damn near flu all the way out. We managed to make it out of the inlet. Once we got turned around and tried to go back in we were basically surfing the waves. My dad did a good job of keeping it straight but unfortunately we missed the inlet twice and had to go back through Breakers to get back out and around so we can enter the inlet again. Well the third time was the charm. We made it in and about 50 feet from the boat ramp the motor blew and we floated right up to the dock. My dad's buddy who was a experienced fisherman and said he would take anything out that Inlet didn't have shit to say that day!
