Each of us live in this world, daily, where millions upon millions of other people live - normal lives, sometimes hectic, sometimes joyful, sometimes sad lives. Ms. Lisitsa, like you and I, is a part of that world. But many of us have another world as well - a door through which we step and live only with our thoughts, dreams, and our own talents. Ms' Lisitsa seems to enter such a world when she sits at a piano - and it really matters not which piano it is - one on the street corner of some foreign country entertaining local folks; a Steinway in Albert Hall entertaining enthusiastic audiences, a Bosendorfer in her studio - it matters not - she plays them all superbly. Often I think, she finds herself entering that door to another world of music - where her own thoughts and dreams dwell. And she invites us in. A wonderful, generous, invitation to watch her in her own world of music. And I thank her for that - I love to watch her perform - not so much to marvel at her dexterity, nor to admire her choice of instrument. Only to watch her as her hands move across the keyboard with grace and ease, as the emotions of her heart and soul dictate. A joy to watch and hear, isn't she? And a tender-hearted soul as well, or so it seems. I think that Frederick, Robert, and probably even Clara smiled when they heard Ms. Lisitsa perform for this video - smiled in pleasure. Never loses her essence, her humbleness... And Chopin and Schumann are charged with so much intention, power, softness... Etudes that need both strong, brave hands and delicate and affable approach... That look at the camera! This new CD is absolutely outstanding. Possibly the best Schumann Etudes Symphoniques ever recorded (I know the piece and recordings well). As to Chopin I bet he is VERY pleased. Sublime pieces of MUSIC, no difficulties to spot anywhere... Val, I hope & pray that you have a LONG, healthy and happy life with your wonderful family and the worlwide community of music lovers. Miss Lisitsa doesn't play piano nor music, but simply express pure emotions that are living in those pieces. Always a joy to live all these mixed emotions as well trough her gift for us. I heard the Etudes for the first time 32 yrs ago by Maurizio Pollini. A great recording, great pianist. But Valentina's sample here shows that she can play the Etudes with ease and perfection. I is like that whatever she takes on (the Etudes, the Rachmaninoff project, Liszt, Beethoven, whatever... ) as project, out comes perfection. Jawdropping perfection. I have been following your playing for quite some time now, Valentina, and in my opinion, you and Evgeny Kissin are the best pianists playing today. I bought the CD for the Etudes the day they came on sale on Amazon (the 10th November) and am so looking forward to receive the CD to immerce my ears in that devine music. Thank you, Valentina, for the music (like ABBA sang about) :)

Valentina's playing always has a sense of frenetic energy to it. Yet, somehow it never loses it's underlying tenderness. I first noticed it with her Moonlight Sonata rendition. It's even more apparent with Chopin.

Some of the most exciting interpretations of these etudes! So many play them like "studies", and it's boring! These recordings however are full of not only the technical brilliance required to play them, but a full and totally genuine love of the pieces which comes across so naturally. If I have anything to do, I cannot put on Chopin (or Schumann) because I no longer care about anything except that world of tenderness and perfection, craft matched to love. Walter Pater said that all art aspires to the condition of music. It is beyond art for me. Chopin and Schumann take me to Dante's Paradiso where the more one experiences the more one desires, in an endless recursion of sublimity.

I think Etudes have the most beautiful code (sorry, I just know the italian word for them) in classical/romantic music, like 25.1 and 10.3 too, with that IV minor cadenza that I always copy in my shitty compositions.

Wow, Val. I loved the end of the etude op 10 n 11, it was unexpected and lovely. And I have to tell you, this rendition of the etudes is far better in interpretation that the dvd.
