Chordplay - 'The Chords of Dokken'

Here's the next episode of Chordplay with The Chords of Dokken.
George Lynch from Dokken/Lynch Mob and various other projects has been an influence of mine since I was a teenager.
His interesting and dark chord voicings and haunting progressions and ideas have always caught my ear, not to mention his crazy shred heroics and techniques.
But this lesson is sticking with those twisted and interesting chords, progressions, and ideas that George unraveled during his days playing with '80s legends Dokken, and you should notice a few chords that we've seen in other episodes, including add9, b5, and even an augmented chord hiding in Dream Warriors.

Furious George is the main reason I started playing. I also met George at a clinic. In my opinion Under Lock and Key is the most perfectly produced album of the 80's

Definitely one of the most underrated guitarists. George Lynch's ''bone crushing'' riffs and solos had my immediate attention from the moment I heard him 35 years ago and I still am in awe to this day of his rare talent. George Lynch, I salute thee.

Even though I wasn’t around during their heyday, I genuinely love Dokken. When I first heard “In My Dreams”, it knocked me out. Not only was it much heavier than, say, Poison or even Mötley Crüe (I love both bands), but that solo sounded like it was from a whole other planet!

Dokken rocked! They had that dark edgy sound and George was a big part of that, but Jeff and Mick were a powerful rhythm section and Jeff can sing. Don is well...Don. : ) I have read that he's rather hard to work with. Or at least, WAS rather hard to work with - he might be better now.

Not sure I agree with the label of under-rated being applied to Dokken. They have been consistently highly regarded among that era's music fans, and especially among musicians. If you mean undervalued in terms of era dominance (radio air play, album sales, crowd attendance) among their competition, Dokken stood out in one respect: their lyrics weren't dumb. The average rock crowd at the time needed bombast and bluff like Van Halen with their two over the top lead singers singing songs from (and for) the crotch. Dokken were a touch dark and scary at a time when the dominant genre was more stripper/party music.

@@siskokidd well they were underrated as far as being respected as a top billing. To ME?, They are far and away a better band than many of the bands who got more respect. After the smoke cleared, so to say , people look back and say Holy Shit, these guys were good, but in my group i got picked on a lot for being a fan. I think i heard there was a " Top hair band" competition years ago and they were voted number one. So many good songs.

I don't think they were underrated. They were going to be headlining until Don walked away after the Mosters of Rock tour in 1988. They might have even escaped the grunge era because Dokken's music wasn't the typical glam rock that went out of style literally overnight... I guess we'll never know for sure but that's my opinion. They had so many good songs (hit songs) that it's hard to believe they would have fizzled because of Nirvana and Sound Garden. I literally liked every song from Back for the Attack the very first time I heard it. There's very few bands that can achieve albums that are Back for the Attack solid.

I agree big time. What is even worse is, they were more talented and better musicians than 90 percent of the other stuff out there. I mean, Jeff Pilson, come on man, Jeff had/has more talent in his big toenail than most had their entire life's work, not to mention he is a heck of a good singer as well.

Absolutely underrated!!! George is awesome!! The title track on Tooth and Nail just ripped my face off the first time I heard it. Saw him live multiple times. Worth it!!! a true great Mr. Scary himself 🎸👍🎸

Although it was Edward who really kickstarted my wanting to play the guitar in my teens (14 when VH 1 came out), eventually, it was George who became my favorite player of all of the 80s guys. His note selection along with his KILLER vibrato and riffs just really did it for me.

Thanks for the great lesson! I'm 56 years old and George was one of my earliest influences learning how to play the guitar. "It's Not Love" was the first Dokken song I learned. At one point years ago I scraped together enough money to actually purchase the ESP Yellow Tiger Stripe and still have it to this day. Very cool video! I remember when they first came out, it totally changed the way I played guitar I’m actually friends with a drummer that George works with in a couple projects, including Ultraphonix. (Chris Moore) I was on the phone a while back with Chris and asked him how George does it, has such an amazing amount of talent and energy to be in so many projects at the same time. He went over a bit of his regimen and what his strong work ethic was, and I was simply blown away. George is definitely one of the hardest working musicians out there, and I’m so glad he’s in KXM!

NICE !!!! I figured out most of George's stuff with Dokken on my own, started with In My Dreams, Tabs at the time were HORRIBLE and I stopped reading music Long Ago because When Playing what was written out, it Never did the Songs Justice. Bought a Chord Chart, started playing by ear,and, it took awhile,but, things became easier to figure out and I got to the point I was actually correcting User Tabs online and new I Finally had a Grasp on hearing a song, and breaking it down , learning the more difficult stuff first and then putting it all together. Thanks so much and yeah, it's really important to have a great ear and that's great you've developed your musical ear! I have to admit from all the years of teaching students (since high school), my ear is pretty accurate and can work quickly. I meet people sometimes and notice that their ear is under-developed and it makes me realize how lucky I was to begin playing by ear first and then I learned music theory and how to read music. Awesome job, as usual brother! I was a HUGE Dokken fan when they came out!!! My brother was more into Ratt, which I love too (DiMartini, I mean, come on man!), but something always drew me more towards Dokken. Must have been those darker chords, but I didn't know what they were at the time. Now that I think about it, DiMartini used chords that weren't much used in hair metal (Wanted Man, Round and Round, Lay it Down). But still, Lynch is a beast and deserves to reign with the most influential guitarists of all time. He certainly influenced me. Keep up the incredible work man. It is much appreciated. You're opening my eyes to the chords I couldn't find on my own.

Don't get discouraged, you have a stop button. After a while, you'll notice a "pattern" with the 80's guitarist. The same kinds of chords, just with a little different twist, you'll see. Keep it up, you'll be glad you did. 👍

Dokken was one of my earliest introductions to hair metal when I heard Lynch's solo in a top solos from that era where they put his Heaven Sent solo and I was hooked. Great lesson man and I agree, the dissonance and the way he shreds is so unique. I do think Don is underrated as a singer, just look at his singing in Dream Warriors or In My Dreams for instance. Recently, a girl commented in my latest original solo and she said my solo sounded like George Lynch... best compliment ever.

Man your channel ROCKs! George Lynch is by far one of my most influential players. Lynch is a multidimensional, elite player who's recorded and live performances are night and day. For years I was in a rut of unimaginative, void of creativity, drone style playing. I spent hours and hours and hours and YT and concerts just studying, really watching how people play. Lynch's approach had an effect on me. His reckless abandon, attack attack attack, slippery jumping modes and playing outside the box style helped me cut loose and improv, and build my own style. I was inspired to play by George Lynch's playing on "In My Dreams". I met him at a clinic some years ago in St Louis....maybe the same clinic tour you saw. I paid $5 to sit on the front row with like 30 people in a little place for this clinic. Before the door opened a few of us were in the waiting area and he walked in, looked through the windows on the door, and said, "cool...everything is set up". Someone said, "hey its George". He told everyone hello and thanked us for coming out. The playing and stories were really cool. It was a great experience. He did a meet and greet afterwards and I thought he was a nice guy. I am still kicking myself for not buying that LTD yellow tiger for sale that night because I could have have George sign it.

Dokken was always my favorite growing up in the 80s. I really like that through Hair Nation on SiriusXM they have really exposed a lot of people to it that may have missed them back in the day. George is my guitar idol and inspiration for my playing.

Most important thing about George Lynch for me is his vibrato, especially on the lower frets. Made me focus on getting good vibrato speed and intonation. Truly a unique player.

I totally agree! His vibrato technique is very unique and I mean more than the "jack off" vibrato technique he's known for too. He even adds a little bit to his chords when he's playing rhythm and I love the sound of adding a touch of vibrato to chords. Not all the time, but every once in a while it sounds good when you sneak it in there when you sustain something. Thanks again and take care!

George Lynch- the King of the half step chord change into diminished intervals. He uses that "Devils interval" more effectively then nearly any other guitarist- and he uses it all the time! Awesome. Take a standard chord change- then flat the five- then repeat on each chord. Over and over again- THAT"s the Dokken sound!

I met George Lynch at Peabody's Down under in Cleveland during one of his shows. Great guitar player and an awesome human being!

I've met him a few times too, and yes, he is just a great person. The first time, I was at a show in Detroit, and it was POURING rain outside. The venue is only open on nights that there are shows, and they open around 7pm for a 10pm show. I got there at like 6:30 and was standing in the rain waiting for the doors to open, I was the only one there. George came outside for a smoke and saw me standing there. He went back in and opened the back door and let me come in and watch their soundcheck, which is really rare (from what I've been told by other fans). He said that he didn't want me dying from pneumonia. lol After the soundcheck, he came over and we chatted for 15 or 20 minutes and I got to also meet Oni Logan. Oni is one of my favorite singers in the world. They were both very cool. I've been to a couple of his clinics too and he remembers that show, he refers to me as the Rainman. lol

I was with a friend of mine at the show and we decided to leave a little early to beat the traffic. Lynch's tour bus was parked on the street a little ways down from the venue. As we were walking twords his bus, his guitar roadie was standing on the sidewalk and he actually asked us if we could get any weed around here somewhere! Well needless to say, we had a bag, lol! Got his guitar roadie high and asked if we could meet Lynch! He said, sure!!!! Hold on! The rest is history for me!!! BTW, my friend couldn't talk because he was basically starstruck, lol!

@@jasonstewart2590 That is such a great "rock" story. :-) The second time that I met George, he was opening for Yngwie too, but Oni Logan had left the band (the first of many times until his permanent departure) and the singer that they have now, Robert Mason was with them. It was in Flint, Michigan at a tiny club. George wasn't feeling too well, it was really cold and rainy outside, just a crappy night. A few of us left before Yngwie came on (I'm not a fan at all of his) and George and Robert were standing by the bus. George signed some autographs and talked for a minute, but had to get some rest. Robert stayed out in the weather with us for half and hour and just talked about all kinds of stuff. He was really cool too. :-)

A while back Lynch played at a bar in Kenosha WI ( Mr Z's I think?) There were like 5 people there so we went and stood right in front of him, he came up and played like 18 inches from our faces and we got to see everything he did. He was laughing about it after.

I had the same experience in Newark Delaware, little more people , maybe 30, but I stood 2 feet in front of him the whole night and afterwards he talked with my son and I. Very cool guy!

Love George Lynch, he's my second favorite, behind EVH. I love his new stuff in KXM as well. Also, I couldn't help but notice The Sword "Warp Riders" on the wall. That's one of my favorite albums, from a band that I consider one of the best metal bands to come out in the last 20 years. Let's have a Late Night Lesson on that album, please!

My favorite Dokken album is Up from the Ashes. I know that it says "Don Dokken" but imo it's still a Dokken album. Great video!

First concert ever, Dokken opening for twisted sister, lol. Was there for George Lynch, awesome. Used to know " just got lucky". Tabbed out in Guitar for the practicing musician back in the day. Still play the Alone again solo all the time just noodling at home, as well as other licks of his I copped here and there. Dude, your like a brother from another mother, same fave bands/songs. Exactly!!! George, Eddie, and Randy are the top 3 guitar players ever!!! They came up around the same parts of California, competed against each other, and inspired each other to be better, yet different.

Another great episode but I wish you would delve into more of the songs as lessons. We both love the same music which I grew up with. I think my first album was Black Sabbath with the witch on the cover. I'll be waiting for the next one. Peace out.
