3 George Lynch Licks From 1989

Here's the next episode of Three For All with 3 George Lynch Licks from 1989.
I've had a number of requests for more ideas from George Lynch and since I haven't created a "clip" lesson featuring him, I figured it would be an interesting lesson to make as his bag of sinister licks and tricks is legendary and beyond inspiring, to say the least.
This lesson features ideas that came from a guitar clinic bootleg filmed somewhere in Japan in 1989. The entire clip is around 25 minutes long and features George performing a soundcheck in front of a few folks during the first section, while the second half includes footage from the actual clinic, where an entire classroom is noticeably seated in front of him and watching Lynch strut his stuff.
This lesson features a few ideas I snagged from this candid video including an unusual (but interesting) arpeggio idea, a stretchy harmonic minor lick, a stretchy wide interval idea, and more.

Ozzy (Sharon) picked Jake over George because of Jakes look. George had picked up a job delivering alcohol to bars and had cut his hair real short. Ozzy (Sharon) didn’t like it so they fired George right in front of Jake and told Jake he had the job. True story.

#Hesch tag a bit of a grey area. George quit his delivery job when he was recruited by Dana Strum (Slaughter) to be Ozzy’s next guitarist. George ended up going out on tour with Ozzy the last few shows and playing with the band during sound check and then watching Brad Gillis from the side of the stage during the shows. Not sure if he ever had an actual contract.

@@Snostrebla1 oh okay, I didn't know that. Sharon deciding everything for Ozzy, as always. Ozzy strikes me as quite a sweet guy but Sharon is quite the opposite. Same with never giving any credit to Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake. So George being shoved aside doesn't surprise me one bit. In the end it is all about fame and fortune and doing whatever it takes to protect that even if that means hurting others in the process. Jake E Lee got stepped on later on as well. I have been playing the guitar for 30 years or so now and grew up listening and going to see the 80’s bands. I have tried to sound like them but my licks always just sound blues or blues fast ! I have had a number of guitar teachers ranging from teacher types through to a recovering heroin addict - now he had a few tales to tell but none have been able to help me progress. That all ended when I discovered this channel . I have got back into practicing and working hard on the techniques and licks DB illustrates. I love the three for all and have discovered some new music too. Feeling really inspired at the moment and like I’m getting somewhere . Keep ‘em coming mate . 🇬🇧

In my opinion, Lynch is one of the the very greatest guitarists to have ever played. He’s not only a legit hot-rod gunslinger with miles of chops, but also a true musical artist and entirely unique. Just discovered your channel due to the George Lynch vids! Very nice! Man, George's playing has a voice that has always grabbed me! One of my favorites. I got to see him when Dokken opened up for Aerosmith on their tour supporting Back for the Attack and then I drove from Dallas to Sioux Falls, S.D. year before last and got to see the warm up show before the 6 show reunion tour they did in Japan. Wonderful video! As a young teen i worshipped at the altar of George haha! I remember standing a few feet away from him when I saw Lynch Mob on the Wicked Sensation tour. I love how you take a video from the past, find a gem in it, and pass it on to us. A great teaching tool. I teach kickboxing as well as play guitar. If one of my students admires a certain fighter. I will find a video of that fighter using a skill set that I want to teach and use it as a tool to help motivate my student. Def a monster phraser 🤙 hes gotten older n lost a bit of his vintage edge .But his Instructional video on VHS with that quilted maple orange ESP..( which i had made but with a black reversed kamakazi headstock 😎)when the video first starts he's just straight Fire.They used some of that video and put some phrases on the Lynch mob album.So it wasn't just an instructional guitar video but had actual live recordin too in the meantime for some of the solos on that album which is really cool.There's too much to say about him but now it makes sense why I thought Warren dimartini sounded like lynch n jake lee.That's interesting I noticed it years ago who sounded like him n those guys came to mind.I love your channel BTW and you've helped me immensely in learning all kinds of guitar theory n licks.Excellent job 💥👌

George is the James Brown of Guitar , Hardest working Guitarist in Guitar World lol He's got so many bands he would have to find a month when he wasn't playing live or recording with Sweet or Pinnick . But A Lynch - DeMartini guitar duo with a full band behind them would be interesting as hell to me or a all Instrumental but I would prefer a band situation. Warren is a good song writer as well . Late Night Lessons, yeah there are a lot of “shedders” who release videos & do a lot of clinics in Japan. There seems to be quite an audience for shredders in Japan. I’m not sure if I mentioned it before, I used to live in Japan for 12 years. I met my wife there & our son was born & raised there for the first nine years of his life. For three of my years there I taught English. Some of them were to fairly large classes of kids. I had a Japanese coworker in those situations. I understand the awkwardness George felt. It is a weird feeling when someone is translating what you are saying & there is a large number of people looking at you while listening to the translation. He used his guitar to get away from that awkward feeling by “noodling around. 😊 I sang for a band for a while in Japan, too. We just played local bars/pubs, but it was fun. 👍🏻 We played mostly covers but threw in a couple of originals, also.

Late Night Lessons, I miss it. I was angry & frustrated by the blatant racism I experienced on a, nearly, daily basis. But it is all contingent on where you live. At one point I lived in an area that wasn’t very receptive to non-Japanese people. But, I moved from that area & then got back to enjoying it. I miss it. If you get the chance, check it out. It is an experience. Having been there for 12 years I was immersed in the culture. It is different to live in a culture versus visiting. But, yeah, I miss it. My wife & son miss it. My son is forgetting his Japanese. My wife speaks to him almost exclusively in Japanese, but regardless my son’s Japanese skills are waning. By the way, the header photo on my channel is the Yokohama during Sakura (cherry blossom) season. I took that photo one block from my apartment. It was great. There were usually swans or other cool looking birds milling around on the banks & rocks. It was a cool area to live in. Down the street was a Shinto shrine.

Thank you! I actually started Late Night Lessons with a 'Chords of Pink Floyd' lesson back in February. I totally love David Gilmour and PF's music. I'm a big prog rock guy, so I know I'll be tackling more of his music (and others) in the future. Honestly, I started with a randomized mix of lessons for this channel, but as I started to notice a lot of views and attention for the classic 80's guitarists that never seemed to get their due - I focused on that area to help build the channel and get things moving forward. As I continue with these lessons and push the channel forward I plan on talking about almost everything imaginable. Great lesson!! I can definitely relate to your methods of teaching. I to was a fan of Randy Rhoads and Lynch back in the day I can hear all the key notes and signature phrases in certain players who influenced each other ....I actually had tons of magazines "Guitar player " my prized issue with Randy Rhoads has his original teaching from a student of his Robert La fond..

George Lynch is why I started playing guitar after watching Dokken on MTV all the time I loved every song album and video's they made. ' In My Dreams ' Love that video and song of course and the guitar solo just made me get a guitar like an addict. But one thing about George's sound is when I would go see them live his sound or equipment IDK but his solos changed all around and I was bummed a lot of times when it got to the solo sounded so different from the album almost unrecognizable. I think because Dokken when they recorded there albums they used like 24-48 Track's and the thing I love about Van Halen is unlike a lot of band's when they record they do it live just go into the studio play and record and live Eddie sounds almost just like the album of course it's live so he always throws in few different things. But still George Lynch was one of my favorite guitarist growing up and E.V.H of course !.✌

Hey DB.....what type of bridge is that in your Strat?

Hey - thanks for the question! It's a Fender Deluxe bridge with GraphTech String-Saver saddles. I've used them for about 15 years and I love GraphTech products. I had an issue with string breakage and tuning stability before I put them on the guitar, but as soon as I did the string breakage was gone and the tuning seemed more stable too. Great upgrades!

Funnily enough.. that last lick in Gm.. if you dropped it down one fret - anchoring on F# on the 14th fret, play the lick, and stretch out to C# - that is the same exact lick that Yngwie Malmsteen plays on his main run in Far Beyond The Sun. It is the same exact lick. George makes it sound darker or even more diminished than what it is by moving his highest note either up or down a fret, depending on the phrasing of the chords being played underneath. But that is the same exact lick in Far Beyond the Sun.

Hi Dave ! Love your lessons bro youre a prodigy for sure! Could you do a lesson on the full intro solo to dokken paris is burning live in berlin. Thats my fave solo ever . But i dont have a clue what george is doing. Theres other people on youtube that play it. But theyre just showing off and not teaching what is being played. It's regular standard tuning in this video. Although George does tune down sometimes, he was in standard during the clips in this video so I matched him and kept it in standard.
