Here's the next episode for Chordplay - 'The Chords of Megadeth.'
Dave Mustaine established himself as a guitar-driven force to be reckoned with when he was still working with Metallica.
As he's shuffled and fine-tuned the group Megadeth, he's employed some ferocious talent to aid with creating some of the most beloved (and historic) speed and thrash metal music ever recorded.
Most of Megadeth's recordings feature interesting chord voicings, mutant progressions, implied movements, sinister droned strings, and so much more. It's highly recommended to listen and learn as much as you can from this group, which has a legacy of creating interesting guitar parts and tapping into uncharted territory (most of the time).
Give this lesson a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to the Late Night Lessons channel - THANK YOU!
Rock on!

I’ve always loved how Dave/Marty inverted the power chords on Holy wars. Play it like a straight up power chord then inverted on the next measure. Gives a slightly “strange” flavor to it. (Alien type shit-depending on how good my weed was) Barely noticeable but noticeable enough to hear it.

Thanks for the chord play. I’ve always thought Dave Mustaine came up with cool chord progressions and interesting chromatic riffing. Rust in Peace, in particular, was just packed with examples of this great guitar work.

That's true and I know a lot of the guitarists that he's played with seem to get most of the attention, but Mustaine totally has some great ideas and tricks up his sleeve - especially when writing a metal song and putting his riffs/ideas together. Thanks for watching and ROCK ON\m/

This episode was awesome. First that story is hilarious. And I totally agree with you about Dave writing the good riffs/ songs in Metallica's good days. I very much prefer Megadeth. And the chords are so textured and dark. Thank you!

I guess you kinda were lucky when you didn't ever see them live. I was a huge Megadeth fan and around 2008 I went to see them live on a festival and I'm not gonna lie, it was the worst gig I've ever seen. They were the last show number and my friends already left but I stayed to watch them, they were one of the biggest reason I travelled to that festival. However, after a couple of songs I couldn't listen to it anymore and left to find my friends. I don't know what was going on but it wasn't right. It's like they had some tone deaf amateur singing drunk because it wasn't what you were supposed to hear on the song. That said, it's more like playing lottery when you go see them, they're not always bad. I saw them another time, I forget if it was a couple of years before or when, but then they were just fine. Yet it's a bit unfortunate to say that seeing Megadeth was just fine if you've seen gigs from the early 90's and The Rude Awakening dvd. If you haven't seen it, you should check out an interview with the mixing engineer/producer of Megadeth early years by Spectre Sound Studios on youtube.

I don't think you need to chose side in the Metallica vs Megadeth ”conflict”. Both bands are great with their own legacy. Megadeth sure do have more interesting chords and scales and I'm not a big fan of Metallica's recent albums. But classic Metallica are hard to match!
